Parent's Guide to Homeschooling ? The Only ... - Survival and Beyond

If you?re considering homeschooling your child at home, you?re making the right decision.. Parents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government-run schools for years, but they often have no idea why they are so bad. The fact is; public schools are exactly the way they are intended to be? poor. ?No Child Left Behind? is nothing more than a clever marketing slogan intended to sell us on more federal control over education under the pretense that all children will be better educated. Does anyone really believe that because the federal government is asserting more influence over the educational system that our children will learn more than before from this broken system? The truth is that MOST children are left far behind, and it?s deliberate. Why? Because the goal is to offer only an eighth grade level of schooling to all, no matter how old the children get. They have no intention of actually raising educational standards, so they lower them in order to make failing students look like they?re succeeding.

Dumbing down is not a joke, it?s the national policy. The government is not concerned with providing the kind of education that most parents want for their children. While parents want their kids to be independent, problem-solving individuals, ?the government wants children to become compliant human resources to be used by government and industry for their own purposes.? according to Charlotte Iserbyt?s book: ?The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America?. The Feds want uniformity ? a workforce and a military ? not an educated citizenry. When the schools say they are ?successful,? it means they are turning out conditioned, obedient, group thinkers.

Let me make it abundantly clear that I do not believe that our teachers and educators or complicit with this agenda of mediocrity and conditioning. ?Many teachers are very passionate and care deeply about the education of our youth (and get paid far too little for what they do). Unfortunately, neither they nor the public at large have much control over the situation. While there are ?local? school boards and administrators, they only decide the trivial details of their local schools. The major planning (curricula, rules, etc.) is designed and directed by the state education departments, which in turn are directed by Washington. Meanwhile, work rules that govern teachers are written by their unions with virtually no negotiating by local residents. Thus, the public schools are uniform, and mediocre everywhere?yes, even in ?good? districts. Yet despite all the dissatisfaction with our country?s educational system, there?s still a pervading opinion that people who want to educate their kids at home are kooks, who are doing their children a grave disservice by not allowing the government to indoctrinate and institutionalize them!

?I?ve noticed a facinating phenomenon in my thiry years of teaching: schools and schooling are increasingly irrelvant to the great enterprises of the planet. No one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes or politicians in civics classes or poets in English classes. The truth is that schools don?t really teach anyting except how to obey orders. This is a great mystery to me because thousands of humane, caring people work in schools as teachers and aides and administrators, but the abstract logic of the instituion overwhelms their individual contributions. Although teachers do care and do work very, very hard, the instituion is psychopathic ? it has no conscience. It rings a bell and the young man in the middle of writing a poem must close his notebook and move to a different cell where he must memorize that humans and monkeys derive from a common ancestor.?

? John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Education

One of the biggest criticisms of home schooling has been the concern that children educated at home will grow up lacking social skills. I think the real concern for the government is that they will lack socialist ideologies. Children who receive home schooling tend to be confident, creative, and independent. Therefore, not so easily stuffed into a mold of conformity and blind compliance. Another misconception is that the home school environment shelters children in an insular existence, and deprives them of any ?real world? experience. I?ve actually heard teachers say, ?Schools prepare children for the real world.? Nothing could be further from the truth! Our government schools function more like prisons, in that they are intentionally separated from the real world. In public schools, children don?t even have civil rights!

There is very little similarity between school and reality. Students are taught the ?facts? that the government wants them to know, and the ideals that they want them to believe. Its rules don?t exist in the real world, and its deceptive and stressful culture must be unlearned after leaving school. Even most of what has been learned there needs to be forgotten in order to function in the real world.

Public schools claim to offer ?education.? but what they are supposed to offer is schooling ? the basic academic skills. With those skills, we can get our ?education? for ourselves, mostly from learning things that interest us ? Or as Isaac Asimov ? one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century famously said: ??Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is.?

Even fewer kids today ever get any real schooling because the public system has become more preoccupied with teaching ?political correctness? coddling self-esteem issues and pushing government propaganda than teaching the basic, fundamental skills. And what little actually is ?taught?, students are forced to ?learn? through rote memorization, because the information they are forced to assimilate is devoid of any kind of real-world context. As a result, the schools make learning a negative experience and a bad memory. And that?s exactly what many kids take with them through life ? the hatred of learning.

Each year in school only prepares students for the next school year, not for real life. If the government wanted the schools to be better, they would be. But since the system claims to be excellent, it?s clear that the government wants its schools to be exactly the way they are ? mediocre and worse.

BP Drilling Disaster Plus 2 Years: Is the Gulf of Mexico Healthy Again?

BP Oil Spill, Deepwater Horizon DIsasterOIL'S WELL?: It is still unclear whether or not marine and coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico are healthy two years after BP's offshore drilling rig exploded 40 miles off the Louisiana coast, eventually releasing 205.8 million gallons of oil into the water column. Image: U.S. Coast Guard

Dear EarthTalk: I?ve seen a lot of warm and fuzzy TV ads, some sponsored by BP Oil, urging me to vacation in the Gulf of Mexico. But are things really ?back to normal???Paul Shea, Dublin, Ohio

The Gulf of Mexico may be open for business and eager to attract tourists, but it?s still unclear whether or not marine and coastal ecosystems there are healthy two years after BP?s offshore drilling rig exploded 40 miles off the Louisiana coast, eventually releasing 205.8 million gallons of oil into the water column.

Five months after the April 2010 disaster the Obama administration released a detailed recovery plan, calling for spending up to $21 billion?most which would come from BP?s civil penalties?on clean-up and long-term ecosystem restoration. With much of this work?designed to complement the restorative powers of Mother Nature?well underway, some observers are pleased with the results so far.

?The natural recovery is far greater than what anybody hoped when it happened,? says James Morris, a University of South Carolina biologist and a member of the National Research Council committee tasked by Congress to assess the effects of the spill on the Gulf's ecosystem. ?The fears of most people?that there would be a catastrophic collapse of the ecosystem in the Gulf?never materialized.?

?The fisheries have come back like gangbusters,? Morris reports. ?One of the interesting findings was that after the oil spill, bait fish populations collapsed, and predator populations boomed. The reason was that there was no fishing pressure on the top predators because people stopped fishing after the spill. So the predator fish populations rebounded, and they grazed down their prey.?

Not everyone shares such a rosy view. The international environmental group Greenpeace reports: ?Throughout the food chain, warning signs are accumulating. Dolphins are sick and dying. Important forage fish are plagued with gill and developmental damage. Deepwater species like snapper have been stricken with lesions and their reefs are losing biodiversity. Coastal communities are struggling with changes to the fisheries they rely upon. Hard-hit oyster reefs aren?t coming back and sport fish like speckled trout have disappeared from some of their traditional haunts.?

Still other observers argue that two years is not enough time to tell whether the region?s ecosystems will be severely damaged long term. ?We really don?t know the effects the Deepwater Horizon spill had in the deep sea because we know little about the ecosystem processes there,? reports Gary Cherr, director of UC Davis? Bodega Marine Laboratory and a lead author on a recently released paper published in the journal Bioscience. Cherr and his fellow researchers, including leading oceanographers, ecotoxicologists, and ecologists, conclude that scientists need more time to study how to contain damage from such accidents, especially given the trend to seek new sources of oil in off-shore regions around the U.S. and beyond.

?The deep sea is not a dead zone. It?s not a desert. There?s a lot of life down there,? adds Cherr. ?Unfortunately it?s not until a disaster happens that we try to piece together the impacts. That?s difficult to do when you don?t have a complete?or even partial?understanding of the ecosystem.?

Anxiety Management Guide | ArticlePDQ.com

The situations which trigger anxiety may well be physical, mental, or emotional. This condition is easily activated with a similar exposure to a threat of physical attack or perhaps a memory of horrible corporeal abuse. In the event that I happen to cross a mad dog?s path, for example, I?d go crazy that I?d certainly pee my pants. There happen to be countless times that dogs attempted or about to harm me, but never did though. In accordance with my past experience with dogs, my nervous about an attack raises when I come across one, causing panic. Past helpless manipulation and mental control is one other way to spark the situation. The condition may similarly be prompted due to a flashing memory of emotional manipulation from someone close or perhaps anyone who had a hold over you. It is not so simple to escape from the long term effects of manipulative control particularly when it was done every single day for so long,it feels like you were brainwashed. You begin to show irrational behaviors when you find yourself, once again, presented with the same or closely identical incidents of your past. For example bring to mind a person who had been emotionally abused. There are those who were subjected to rare cases of emotional torment including use of continuous patterns of abuse by the abuser capitalizing on fear. Perhaps a specific song consorts the act of abuse. Whenever there is financial issues, it possibly catalyzes the deed. The abused person learns to recognize these behaviors and associate them together with the abuse. You could have an anxiety occurrence.

Fear or anxiety may possibly be triggered by particular sights, smells, sounds, places, or people. As long as it dictates your memory of fear from past experiences, it can cause anxious behaviors.

You have the ability to win over anxiety. Overcoming anxiety is a learned behavior but it is entirely possible. Once anxiety is about to occur, know the sensations your body is starting. Remember not to allow these feelings affect the way you act by taking power over it. Control ? that should be your main goal because you cannot prevent these feelings from coming.

Avoid entertaining fear inside your head. It?s definitely difficult to achieve, but on top of that, very doable. Try shifting your focus on something else. This way your busy mind will somehow ignore fear, making it more bearable. The better focused you are the more management you can have. Put all your energy on learning control or having a hold of yourself instead of denying fear because it is inescapable.

Search for something positive to concentrate on. Unfavourable, hostile way of thinking merits you nothing but pain so you must dispose of it. Doing so will let you alleviate your feelings of fear. The thoughts that you just give your focus on will in the end begin to use you. If you give your focus on the positive, the positive will start to dictate your reactions.

Increase Your Home's Worth With These Home Improvement Ideas ...

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to get quotes from at the very least three different contractors. This is important because prices may vary greatly, as may the quality of work. Get a good feeling for your contractor by sitting down with him or her and discussing your entire plan.

Before you begin painting a room it is important to lay down drop clothes or old sheets on the floor. When painting a room it is very possible to have paint drip or spill on the floor. Regardless of what type of floor you have it can be very difficult to get paint up once it is on a surface.

It is important to work from the bottom up in a home improvement project. This is the exact opposite approach than you would take for many other projects, but there is a lot more mess involved in home improvement. Make sure to consider the order that you want your projects completed in.

Keep your water flowing during cold weather by adding heat wraps to water pipes located in crawlspaces or under mobile homes. Acting like electric blankets for your pipes, these special wraps use electricity to create just enough heat to prevent ice from forming in the pipes. Frozen pipes can burst or split, causing costly leaks and water damage.

Do some internet research to find out if generic products are the same quality as name brands. Sometimes name brand products are identical to generics that are available under another name. Regardless of what materials you decide to go with, make sure that the contractor installs exactly what you asked for.

To achieve the most even look when installing vinyl tiles, start applying them from the midpoint of the room. To do this, measure the room at its widest points, marking the halfway point of each line. Using a chalk line to mark the intersecting points, you can begin your tile installation at the perpendicular junction point, spreading outward toward the edges of the room.

Hardwood, tile and other smooth surfaces may seem like a good idea in high traffic areas like stairs and hallways, but those same areas can then echo and reverberate throughout the entire house. You wouldn?t want to hear every footstep going down the hallway if you were in a bedroom sleeping.

Give a quick update to your kitchen by wiping down the cabinets and either adding or changing the cabinet hardware. Giving your kitchen cabinets a new set of knobs or handles can really enhance the look of your kitchen without costing a lot of money. With so many styles of knobs and handles available, you can change the character of your kitchen quickly and easily.

Refurbishing an unfinished basement floor can bring the space together while increasing the functionality of the basement. Family members and friends will want to go down there more than they did before and one can create a new area to entertain guests. Putting down a wood, carpet, or synthetic floor will really improve ones basement.

If you?re planning home improvements to create an income property, don?t skimp on drywall. It can help both sound proof your rental unit as well as create a fire barrier between floors. Drywall the ceiling to include protection on all sides, both dampening the sound of people walking above and noise from below.

If you?re planning a major addition to your home, consider the cost of insurance before starting construction. Wood is always more expensive to insure because it is highly flammable. Steel and cement framed structures will cost less to insure because they are highly flame retardant. A conversation with your insurance agent before you begin to build could save you thousands.

Are you ready to start? Remember ?a penny saved is a penny earned.? So, take the time to read ahead of time to avoid any unnecessary mistake. Use the tips provided above to help you save time and money.

Realities of Real Estate: Step one in understanding the Homestead ...

Posted: 2:56 pm Fri, August 31, 2012
By Bob and Donna McWilliams

By the end of 2012, every homeowner in the state of Maryland must ?reapply? for something called the Homestead Tax Credit. If you?ve already done this, there?s nothing to worry about. If you haven?t, it could cost you thousands in higher real estate taxes. During the next couple of columns, we?ll take you through what the Homestead Tax Credit means and how to make sure you don?t pay more than is necessary.

Every three years, one third of all property is assessed. For our home in Annapolis, this was our year. Whenever the new assessments come out, there?s a good deal of confusion about what the numbers mean. And with the fairly new phenomenon of ?declining? assessments, many homeowners are justifiably confused about why their real estate taxes keep going up, even though assessments have gone down. Consequently, the first step in understanding the Homestead Tax Credit requires a basic knowledge of how real estate taxes are calculated.

Homeowners pay real estate taxes to the state, county and, in certain municipalities, like Annapolis, they also pay real estate taxes to the city. There are two components in how the government figures out what you owe. The first is your assessment, which is what the state has determined is the value of your home.

The second part of calculating your taxes is the tax rate. There are different tax rates for the state and individual counties or municipalities. Right now, the Maryland state tax rate is 11.2 cents for every $100 of assessed value. If you live in Anne Arundel County, you add to that 91 cents for the county portion, resulting in a total of $1.022 per $100 of assessed value. However, if you live in Annapolis, your tax rate is higher. You pay the same 11.2 cents to the state and your county tax is reduced to 54.3, but you also pay an additional Annapolis city tax of 56 cents. That brings the tax rate for city residents to $1.215 per $100 of assessed value, 19 percent higher than what?s paid in the county.

The state tax rate of 11.2 cents is unchanged versus last year. But both Anne Arundel County and Annapolis increased their tax rates by 3 cents. On the surface, one would think that if assessments declined in Annapolis by 15 percent and the tax rate only went up by 3 cents or 5.7 percent, the result would be lower taxes. Well, that?s not going to happen. The tax bill for Annapolitans is going to go up, and go up rather significantly. The reason is something called the Homestead Tax Credit. Here?s how that works.

Basically, the Homestead Tax Credit limits how much your ?assessed value? can increase in any given year. In Anne Arundel County, the limit is 2 percent. For the state and Annapolis, the limit is 10 percent. Because of this, some of the very large assessed value increases of a few years ago are still phasing in, and even though the new assessed value of your home may have gone down, the assessed value used to calculate your taxes is still going up. This phenomenon is spelled out in the bill passed by the Annapolis City Council to increase the tax rate. In that legislation, it indicates that the total assessed value in the city was projected to increase by 2.9 percent. So, to keep the amount of money flowing into the city coffers unchanged, the tax rate would actually need to be reduced from 53 cents to 51.49. Instead, the city increased the tax rate to 56. The result is an additional $2,966,945 in real estate taxes that will be paid by the citizens of Annapolis.

In the end, the Homestead Tax Credit essentially creates a lag time with respect to paying taxes on what the state considers to be the full market value of your home. But when the new assessments come out and people read the headlines about big assessment reductions, it leaves many scratching their heads when the tax bill continues to go up. The confusion is further complicated by the fact that some homeowners qualify for the Homestead Tax Credit and some don?t. Plus, the amount of the credit varies across the state, and an individual homeowner can have one Homestead credit for his county/state taxes and a very different credit depending on whether he lives in certain municipalities.

For example, the assessed value of our home used by Annapolis to calculate real estate taxes is more that ?twice? the amount of what is used by Anne Arundel County. This is because the Homestead Credit for Anne Arundel County is, in effect, five times higher that the credit provided by Annapolis. Subsequently, if our property were located just outside the Annapolis city limits, our real estate taxes would be 40 percent lower. Part of this is because of higher Annapolis tax rates, but the bulk of it results from the substantial difference in Homestead Tax Credits.

Given the importance of the Homestead Tax Credit, there?s something you should be aware of. Granting the credit used to be automatic. Then a few years ago, the Maryland legislature changed the law, making it necessary for homeowners to make a one-time application for the credit. So, it?s very important that you make this application. To be eligible for the credit, the house must be your principle residence; investment properties do not qualify. For those who just received their new assessment notice in the mail, an application for the Homestead Tax Credit was included. Otherwise, you can apply online at https://sdathtc.resiusa.org/homestead/.

The somewhat convoluted and confusing method for determining real estate taxes can send your head spinning. Plus, the additional element of the Homestead Tax Credit can send makes it all the more difficult to understand. But the bottom line is that, by the end of 2012, you must make reapplication for the Homestead Tax Credit. Otherwise, you could be hit with a tax bill that will be literally thousands more than you legitimately owe.

In next week?s column, we?ll talk more about the Homestead Tax Credit and help guide you through the process of making application.
