Our guest blogger discusses: Maintaining a healthy lifestyleHealthy ...

September 3, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Today Celery and Cupcakes blogger, Jemma Andrew, brings us another article in her guest series on the motivation to keep fit? here she discusses what works for her in reaching her her long term goals!

Hi!? I?m Jemma and I blog over at Celery and Cupcakes. Staying motivated is one thing, but there is also being able to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.

It has taken me so long to realise what is right for my body in terms of health and fitness.? At one point I was under eating and over exercising and eating all of the wrong foods.? The comparison between my life then and my life now are complete polar opposites.? I?m in such a great place right now and no longer chasing skinny but striving to be happy and healthy!

Here are a few tips that help me to stay happy and healthy as part as my new long term fitness goal:

Don?t sweat the small stuff ? I used to feel so guilty if I didn?t work out for over 1 hour a day, of course now I realise how silly this was.? Just getting out there and doing something even for just 15 minutes is still worthwhile.? It?s not the quantity that counts but the quality of the workout.

Balance ? I am a great believer that balance is key to a healthy lifestyle and cutting back on everything that is deemed ?bad? in your diet may cause you to overeat on a load of junk food. A little bit of what you fancy does you the world of good, but just have one cookie instead of the whole cookie jar.

Being organised ? With a busy lifestyle it can be hard to stay on track but being organised really helps with this.? Meal planning and even preparing meals the night before to take to work is a great way to make sure that you?re eating healthy outside of the home.

Take it easy ? After an injury I used to be really hard on myself and tried to carry on training at the same pace before my injury.? However, I realised how dangerous this was and I could have caused further damage.?? Now I make sure that I rest up and ease my way back into exercise once I have recovered from an injury.? There is a great guide to common injuries on the AXA PPP website.

For me health and fitness is a major part of my lifestyle and my long-term goal is to be happy and healthy and I have never felt better.? I wish you good luck in achieving your own long-term goals.

NJ man arrested in deadly attack on sleeping kids

(AP) ? A man high on PCP-laced marijuana stabbed two neighborhood children in their home while they slept, killing a 6-year-old boy and critically wounding his 12-year-old sister, authorities said.

Osvaldo Rivera was found hiding between a mattress and a bedroom wall Sunday afternoon inside a Camden apartment and was charged Monday with murder and attempted murder, said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Camden County prosecutor's office.

The attack was the second recent one in Camden, an impoverished city across the river from Philadelphia, involving a child and a suspect said to be high on PCP and marijuana.

Rivera, 31, was being held in jail awaiting arraignment, which Laughlin said will likely be held Tuesday. Laughlin didn't know if Rivera had an attorney.

Police found blood-stained sneakers inside the apartment where Rivera was arrested that matched bloody footprints in the home where Dominick Andujor was stabbed to death, Laughlin said. The boy's 12-year-old sister had her throat slit while she slept in another room. She remained hospitalized Monday at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. The hospital, though, has declined to discuss her condition, citing privacy reasons.

While being questioned by investigators, Rivera said he had smoked a combination of marijuana and the hallucinogenic drug PCP before the attack, Laughlin said.

On Aug. 22, 33-year-old Chevonne Thomas of Camden allegedly decapitated her 2-year-old toddler and then fatally stabbed herself after smoking a similar combination, known as "wet."

Laughlin said there have been several other murders in recent years in which PCP-laced marijuana has apparently played a role. He said the drug combination makes people incoherent, hallucinatory and, in some cases, violent, adding that authorities plan to take steps to curb the drug's market.

The children stabbed Sunday were being watched by a 14-year-old girl, authorities said. The teen, who was unharmed, was caring for them because their mother recently underwent surgery and was still in the hospital.

Laughlin said the 12-year-old, whose name wasn't released, fled the home after the attack and was found at a neighbor's home a few doors down. Police soon went to the girl's home and were met by another child who ran outside, screaming for help for her brother. The 6-year-old boy was found lying on the floor.

While Rivera was still being sought on Sunday, a woman who lives nearby said he was well-known around the neighborhood and seemed to be a peaceful person. He also was often seen playing with the local children.

"People would never think he would do something like this," Nakyta McCray said.

Fiery Obama embarks on march to the Dem convention

(AP) ? President Barack Obama lampooned the just-completed Republican National Convention as better-suited to an era of black-and-white TV and " trickle-down, you're on your own" economics Saturday, and declared that Mitt Romney "did not offer a single new idea" to fix the economy.

"There was a lot of talk about hard truths and bold choices, but no one actually told you what they were," Obama said in Iowa, chuckling, as he set out on a three-day tour of battleground states in the run-up to his own convention. Later, Obama said, the Republican gathering was so rooted in the past, there should have been a rabbit-ears antenna on the convention hall.

Yet even the site of Obama's convention, Charlotte, N.C., served as an unwelcome reminder to the Democrats of an economy so weak that it threatens his chances for re-election.

The president carried North Carolina in 2008, but the state's unemployment rate is pegged at 9.6 percent, well higher than the nation's 8.3 percent and tied with next-door South Carolina for fifth from the bottom.

Obama's convention opens Tuesday at the Time Warner Cable arena with evening speeches by first lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the keynote speaker.

The president will be nominated for a new term on Wednesday, when former President Bill Clinton also will speak. Vice President Joe Biden delivers his own acceptance speech the same evening.

Obama's prime-time acceptance speech, to be delivered at the outdoor Bank of America Stadium, caps the convention on Thursday night. Aides predict a capacity crowd will hear the speech at the site, which has a capacity of nearly 74,000 for football.

Democrats are taking their turn in the convention spotlight just days after the Republicans met in Tampa, Fla., to nominate former Massachusetts Gov. Romney for the White House and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to be vice president.

A parade of speakers in Tampa excoriated Obama's handling of the economy, which is struggling in the weakest recession recovery of the post-World War II era.

The economy has been the top-rated issue in opinion polls all year, and the president is eager to turn the focus onto Romney on that subject.

Republicans "will take us backwards," Obama said, to the age of "trickle-down, you're on your own" economics that begin with tax cuts for the rich but tax increases for the middle class.

The president made a brief detour to foreign policy in his speech.

"Gov. Romney had nothing to say about Afghanistan this week or the plans for the 33,000 troops who will have come home from the war by the end of this month," he said.

The Republican challenger "said ending the war in Iraq was tragic. I said we'd end that war and we did," Obama said.

Romney said late last year, in a veterans roundtable, "The precipitous withdrawal is unfortunate. It's more than unfortunate, I think it's tragic. It puts at risk many of the victories that were hard won by the men and women who served there."

Obama, pointing to successes, declared, "I said we'd take out bin Laden and we did."

His audience cheered the mention of the demise of the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, who was killed in his hideout in Pakistan by U.S. Navy SEALs last year. Obama ordered the raid, and even Republicans credit him for the decision.

Romney campaigned in Ohio during the day ? the opening of the college football season ? and proclaimed it was time the country had a winning season after years of a sluggish economy and high unemployment.

Referring to the number of jobless in the country, Romney told his own cheering crowd, "If you have a coach that's zero and 23 million, you say it's time to get a new coach."

He also pledged to cut the federal deficit and "get us on track for a balanced budget."

Yet Romney has yet to produce a budget for public inspection. Nor did he mention that, as chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan wrote a plan projecting the deficit would decline each year from 2013 through 2017 but then begin an inexorable rise again. Additionally, the federal debt is projected to rise each year, from a current level of nearly $16 trillion to an estimated $25 trillion at the end of 2022.

Obama made Iowa his first stop on what his campaign billed as "The Road to Charlotte."

Obama spoke in Urbandale, outside Des Moines, on a sprawling 500-acre property. With barns, American flags and Obama banners all around, the late summer scene offered him the quintessential heartland backdrop. He later spoke at a rally in Sioux City.

He told the crowd Iowa was first on his schedule "because it was you, Iowa, who kept us going when the pundits were writing us off."

There was another reason, as well.

Polls make the state one of eight or so battlegrounds where the election is most likely to be decided. The president carried Iowa in 2008, and in an indication of the struggle he now faces, he has been lavishing time on it in recent weeks. He spent three days in August on a bus tour that traversed the state from west to east.

Following two stops in Iowa, Obama was flying to Colorado for a Sunday appearance before college students at the University of Colorado.

Obama's schedule for Monday includes an appearance in Toledo, Ohio, yet another battleground state, before a trip to Louisiana to inspect damage from Hurricane Isaac.

Romney visited Louisiana on Friday.

Television ratings for the final night of the Republican convention were lower than four years ago. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 30.3 million viewers watched Thursday night's coverage of Romney's acceptance speech. That was down by one-fourth from 2008, when John McCain spoke on the final night of the Republican gathering in St. Paul., Minn.

Citing Giffords, Huckabee Hits Rove for ?Murdered? Joke

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has been embattled Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin?s most prominent defender, went on the offensive, attacking GOP strategist Karl Rove for an off-the-cuff remark he made about Akin turning up ?mysteriously murdered.?

Huckabee said in a lengthy post on his website published on Saturday that Rove?s comment was ?disturbing,? especially ?in light of the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.? Rove has reportedly called Akin to apologize for the remark, which he made at a donor gathering in Tampa that a reporter attended unbeknownst to Rove.

Huckabee argued that Rove should be as ostracized as Akin has been, after Akin suggested last month that women were unlikely to get pregnant in cases of ?legitimate rape.? Akin later apologized, but Republican officials, including Rove, have tried to shove him from the Senate race, fearing he cannot win the seat currently held by Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Huckabee complained of a double standard in the GOP for those ?in the club? and those not. The episode highlights the simmering tensions between the Republican Party establishment, embodied by Rove, and its grassroots social conservative base, which Huckabee represents.

?Todd erred, apologized, and we need to help him win, not convince ourselves he can?t,? Huckabee wrote. ?Karl erred, apologized, and we need to treat him in the way we want Todd Akin to be treated. If Todd is continued to be alienated and Karl doesn?t suffer the same fate, then I will encourage all the activists I can to spend all their time, money, and effort in Missouri.?

?If the party doesn?t want us, then I guess they don?t need us,? Huckabee concludes, saying he and his wife were sending the biggest legal donation they could to Akin.

California To License Self-Driving Cars

Well, 300,000 miles, one non-fatal accident (with, again, a human at the wheel - but we'll ignore that for now).

Now, I pulled these numbers of a set of google searches. There was a fairly wide range of stats, so I took a bit of an average:

Insurance industry assumes one accident CLAIM per 17.9 years (lots of minor accidents go unclaimed, but we'll ignore them too). Average of 15,000 miles per year per driver. Thus, an average of one accident per 268,500 miles per human driver.

Of course, while the human driver stats are numerous (and this is why insurance is expensive!) the self driving car stats are not. Only one accident with new, unrefined technology in 300,000 miles... and that with a human in control of the car.

That said, your example? That's where a self driving car is much, much better than a human. A human driver with a pregnant woman giving birth, woken up in the middle of the night is going to be tired, highly agitated and distracted and definitely not at his best. The self driving car isn't tired. It doesn't care what time it is. The self driving car will be aware of the speeding racers - and know their exact speed, trajectory, and likely path - sooner than the human driver will, as these are very simple computations to make. The self driving car is indifferent to the passenger; which is also important. It's not distracted, worried, or anxious.

Of course, there certainly are cases where that's just not good enough, extreme emergency cases. That's why all these self driving cars can be driven in manual mode. You've always got that option if need be.

Obviously, routes being set aside for autonomous vehicles will be safer, but routes mixed will be safer than pure-human routes, because autonomous cars are simply safer than human driven cars overall.

I've been rearended while stopped at traffic lights six times in the last twenty years; every time due to an inattentive driver. None of those would happen with an autonomous car.

Finally, yes, mechanical/electronic failure can result in crashes. Just like it can with human drivers - sticking accelerators, for example, failing steering linkages, brakes, etc. Software problems? No different than a human driver having a heart attack, stroke, seizure, getting stung by a bee, etc - those all happen all the time. There's no real difference there.

5 beached whales doing better at Florida center

(AP) ? Veterinarians fed fish drinks to five rescued pilot whales Sunday and kept a close eye on them, trying to nurse the mammals back to health so they can one day return to the ocean.

The five whales were among a group of 22 whales beached in South Florida on Saturday. The rest died of natural causes or had to be euthanized.

The two calves and three juveniles were brought to Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Institute for rehabilitation. Experts said the animals were worn out, but mostly doing well.

"They've all been through a pretty stressful ordeal. We've seen each of them, at one point or another, have a little bit of trouble and need a little bit of help," said Dr. Michelle Davis, senior veterinarian for SeaWorld Orlando.

Some of the whales have been breathing faster than usual at times, causing them to float away from the group and become less active, she said.

Several organizations were working together to care for the whales. About 10 people monitored them around the clock and one person was assigned to each whale to watch it constantly. The whales are being fed fish smoothies through a feeding tube every four hours.

Wildlife experts believe the youngest whale ? a female under the age of 2 ? was still nursing. Her mother did not survive.

"The baby is swimming around the group, calling and whistling for the mother, so we're working to become the mom," said Stephen McCulloch, Harbor Branch program manager.

Experts are teaching her to drink formula from a bottle.

Davis said it was not clear why the whale pod stranded at Avalon Beach State Park in St. Lucie County.

Allison Garrett, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries service, said it's possible one of the animals became sick and the rest of the pod followed it onshore.

"They won't leave (a sick whale). They'll stay together," she said.

The five survivors have only minor injuries and scrapes. The goal was to get the five whales strong enough to survive a roughly two-hour trip to their new home at SeaWorld, which could take about a week.

Davis said she did not know how long it would be before the whales could be released back to the ocean. Until they get better, the whales will rehabilitate together in a pool.

"Even now in the pool, most of them are staying together and swimming around together all the time. That's definitely a way to decrease their stress level," she said.

Hundreds of residents came to the beach to help Saturday, flipping the animals upright so they could breathe better. Volunteers covered the whales with moist towels and poured water over them.

By evening, it was clear that most of the whales would not make it. Necropsies will be performed on them.
