Is Healthy Food Ethical and Environmentally Friendly ... - Health.com

Whole-wheat, organic, free-range?it seems every time we turn around, there?s a new, healthier food option available. Fretting over calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates in the grocery store leaves little room to think about the ethical consequences of our food choices. What?s best for one person?s diet doesn?t always line up with what?s best for a given community, and good-for-you foods aren?t always good-for-earth foods. In fact, some of our healthy favorites have some gnarly implications for Mother Earth and even other humans throughout the world. So we?re breaking down some of the well-known players to figure out the ethical issues involved, and offering an action plan for eating more kindly.

Veggie Tales

It?s the most contested grocery store smackdown since peanut butter vs. almond butter. Which is better: imported organic produce or local, conventionally grown fruits and veggies? On one hand, nobody likes eating a berry coated in pesticides and funky chemicals. Long-term exposure to pesticides can cause chronic health problems and even poisoning. On the other hand, long-distance food hauling releases harmful greenhouse gases and can result in less fresh, lower-quality produce. What?s an informed shopper to do? Read on for the lowdown.

Greatist: The Top 10 Workout Songs Playlist, According to Spotify

Far-flung fruits and vegetables
Importing organic fruits and vegetables via airplane or long-distance trucking releases tons of carbon dioxide emissions (one of the greatest climate change culprits) every year. Eating locally grown, seasonal food, some argue, is a better choice for the environment?and your health, too. Most of the time, produce and meat from local farms (?local? is loosely defined as within a 100-mile radius) tend to be more nutritious and contain fewer chemicals than food that?s grown far away. Extra bonus: Eating close to home helps support local economies. But while locally grown food is often perceived as the greener choice, some larger producers actually end up producing fruits and veggies more efficiently, even if they have to ship them thousands of miles. So when choosing local, the clearest benefit is amped up nutrition.

What We Can Do: Don?t zone out in the produce aisle. While choosing local fare is a fun idea, it?s just as important to eat safely. Definitely try local and organic for the ?dirty dozen??the 12 foods with the highest rate of pesticide residue. Some produce, like the ?clean fifteen? are just as safe when grown conventionally, so buy these locally when available.

Organics
Organic labels are not a guarantee of ethically grown, vitamin-loaded food. A recent study found that organic foods have fewer pesticides than conventionally grown vittles, but they might not be more nutritious. Another research project found that while organic cultivation is better for the environment per unit of space, it might actually be worse than conventional agriculture per fruit or vegetable. On average, organic methods produce up to 34 percent less food than conventional farming. That means each organic tomato carries a larger burden of the overall ecological drawbacks of using land to grow food, like contaminating groundwater, degrading soil, and producing greenhouse gases. Ultimately, it all comes down to the techniques used by a given farmer and the expertise with which they implement those growing strategies.

What we can do: For some people, ingesting fewer chemicals and pesticides is priority numero uno. Others consider organic food more of an afterthought or a small luxury. Regardless of personal preferences, be aware that even if a label says ?organic,? that doesn?t mean it?s supercharged with nutrients or grown from baby angel smiles. All food production has some drawbacks, so it?s important to understand the positive and negative aspects of going organic.

The Animal Kingdom

For many people, lean red meat, poultry, and fish are important parts of a healthy and balanced diet. Red meat trimmed of fat is a good source of protein, vitamin B, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, as is skinless chicken. Fish is loaded with healthy fats, protein, and vitamins and nutrients that can help reduce risk of heart attack and stroke. These proteins are nutritional all-stars, but raising livestock and seafood can have some serious environmental drawbacks. Check out the facts below before shopping.

Seafood
There are plenty of fish in the sea?until there aren?t. Currently 85 percent of the world?s fishable areas (aka fisheries) are exhausted or on the path to collapse. Fishermen use big nets to catch nonfarmable fish?and these can also snare innocent bystander sea creatures like dolphins and sea turtles. Farm fishing can be a great way to produce more seafood, but it comes with its own issues. Certain methods of farming can pollute the ocean, release invasive species into new environments, and damage delicate habitats.

What we can do: The best way to help stop overfishing and pollution is to buy responsibly. Use a seafood buying guide like the Monterey Bay Aquarium?s Seafood Watch pocket guide to find the most local, environmentally friendly fish. Look up the 411 on any fish or seafood at Environmental Defense Fund?s Seafood Eco-Ratings website. The Blue Ocean Institute offers a list of ocean-friendly substitutes for popular fish varieties, and fish-lovers outside the United States can check Overfishing.org for resources on sustainable seafood worldwide.

Meat and poultry
Raising meat and poultry for food is a lesson in numbers?and not necessarily good ones. Some sources suggest livestock produce as much as 51 percent of the world?s greenhouse gases every year, though others argue it?s closer to 18 percent. But no matter the estimates, it still takes significant resources to produce meat, with approximately 2,500 gallons of water and 16 pounds of wheat needed to raise just one pound of beef. Clearing land for cattle ranching alone has been linked to up to 80 percent of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Every hamburger or chicken wing has a high environmental impact, from the fossil fuels used for transport, to the grain cows and chickens eat, to the waste the animals produce.

What we can do: As weird as it may be to eat a meal without animal products, eating less meat isn?t as tough as it seems. Cutting down on meat might also benefit our health: Ditching the steaks reduces exposure to antibiotics and may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol (though there?s some debate about both these points). If going totally veggie isn?t your cup of tea, try dining on alternative proteins two or three times a week or going meat-free just one day a week (on Meatless Mondays, for example). Or make like foodie writer Mark Bittman, who famously tries to go ?vegan ?til dinner? for health, financial, and environmental reasons.

Fair Fare

Fair trade sounds like something more likely to happen at the third grade lunch table than at the supermarket. What?s the deal? The Fair Trade Certified label is an agreement among companies to stick to a base price for commodities. Unlike market prices, Fair Trade prices ensure that workers are paid enough to cover costs of living?food, shelter, education, and healthcare?even if market prices drop. Alongside promoting safe and fair working conditions, Fair Trade also encourages the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly farming and manufacturing. Springing for Fair Trade versions of foods with a history of human rights violations can have a big effect on the lives of farmers and plantation workers.

Coffee
Coffee makes the morning merry and bright, but it?s not as great for the small, independent farmers who grow about 70 percent of coffee. Farmers often produce more beans than needed, so large commercial buyers can shop around and score beans for less than production cost. Unfortunately, most coffee growers lose money in a given season, even when the harvest is plentiful. A local fancy coffee shop might charge $5 for a cappuccino, but it?s unlikely the coffee farmers will see even a small chunk of the change. Coffee production has ecological implications, too. The beans grow best in a tropical climate, so farmers often clear rainforest to make plantations. The deforestation causes soil erosion, loss of habitat for plants and animals, and greenhouse gas emissions produced by clearing techniques among other issues.

What we can do: Be prepared to fork over a bit more cash for environmentally and socially responsible beans. Start by choosing Fair Trade, which will ensure that small-scale farmers are adequately compensated for their labor. Then pick ?shade-grown? coffee, which is cultivated under the canopy layer without destroying the rainforest. If helping the environment isn?t enough incentive, consider your taste buds: Shade-grown coffee takes longer to ripen than sun-grown beans, so the flavor is often richer and more complex.

Bananas
This tropical food looks like a ray of sunshine, but bananas have an ugly side, too. Crack open any history book to read about how American magnates exploited workers and ruled their so-called Banana Republics with an iron fist throughout the 20th century. Working conditions have improved slightly since then, but banana harvesters still work grueling hours, earn little pay, have few rights, and are often exposed to dangerous pesticides.

What we can do: Look for the Fair Trade sticker in the produce aisle; these products come from farms and plantations that are committed to high social and environmental standards. The ?Big Three??aka Dole, Chiquita, and Del Monte?control two-thirds of banana production worldwide, so spending just a bit extra on independent farmers really does make a difference.

Quinoa
This ?recently discovered? superfood is hardly new?quinoa has been cultivated in the Andes since about 3,000 B.C.E. But in 2006, the protein-packed seeds leapt from obscurity to tremendous popularity throughout the world.

Prices have tripled since the little seeds became famous, but local consumption by Bolivians and Peruvians has dwindled because it?s more profitable for farmers to ship quinoa abroad than to sell it locally. Growers typically hang on to some of the crop for personal consumption, but many poorer urban-dwelling Bolivians and Peruvians can?t afford the nutritious staple. Some argue that as a result, the rate of malnutrition among children has risen in recent years. On the flip side, some quinoa cultivators have cashed in on the global food trend and can afford to build new homes, send their children to university, and accomplish other goals that previously seemed out of reach.

And while the quinoa craze hasn?t pushed growing countries to the brink of famine?or even caused the food shortages some outlets report?it has been causing other social and environmental problems in the Andes. In recent years, property disputes between potential growers have gotten ugly, turning into violent Romeo and Juliet-style feuds between towns. Because growing quinoa is so lucrative, people are flocking to farms from cities instead of vice versa. While more country-dwellers cuts down on unemployment in cities, it could lead to overcrowding and soil degradation in high-altitude quinoa growing areas called the altiplano. All the intensified cultivation isn?t ideal for the land, either. Traditionally, quinoa farmers rotated their fields each season and grazed llamas in the resting fields, which helped restock the rocky soil with nutrients. Because quinoa is so profitable, farmers are cultivating for several seasons in a row without letting the land lie fallow, which can destabilize the already delicate land. Plus, in an effort to join the quinoa craze, many llama herders are abandoning their flocks?which means the already rocky and inhospitable soil is losing a key source of fertilizer.

What we can do: Almost all quinoa on grocery store shelves in North America is from the Andes, but this might be changing soon. North American farmers have started capitalizing on quinoa?s adaptability and are experimenting with growing the popular seeds in Oregon, Washington, and the Rocky Mountains. Look for local, sustainable quinoa in the next few years. Until then, try to limit quinoa consumption and substitute with other grains. One more option available now: Although tough to find, some brands of quinoa have been following Fair Trade regulations.

The Takeaway

Sometimes choosing environmentally friendly, sustainable, socially acceptable, ethical, and healthy food isn?t so easy (shocking, we know). The best way to pick the right food for a specific diet and lifestyle is to get all the facts first and make informed decisions at the grocery store.

Secret Service chief to step down this month

(AP) ? Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan announced his retirement Friday, bringing to a close a turbulent period for the law enforcement agency that included a South American prostitution scandal and a pair of White House gate-crashers.

In nearly seven years as director, Sullivan had to answer serious questions from lawmakers on two occasions about his employees' actions on the job and off.

Last May, in testimony before Congress, Sullivan apologized for the conduct of Secret Service employees caught in a prostitution scandal in Colombia. Thirteen agents and officers were implicated after an agent argued with a prostitute over payment in a hotel hallway in Cartagena, Colombia.

The employees were in the Caribbean resort city in advance of President Barack Obama's arrival for a South American summit in April. After a night of heavy partying in some of Cartagena's bars and clubs, the employees brought women, including prostitutes, back to their hotel. Eight of those Secret Service employees were forced out of the agency, three were cleared of serious misconduct and at least two were fighting to get their jobs back.

The incident prompted Sullivan to issue a new code of conduct that barred employees from drinking within 10 hours of the start of a shift and from bringing foreigners to their hotel rooms

In 2009, Sullivan had to answer questions about how a pair of aspiring socialites talked their way into a state dinner at the White House. That the pair made it into the highly secured event was not only a violation of protocol but raised questions about how easily an unauthorized person could gain close access to the president and vice president.

"In this case, I fully acknowledge the proper procedures were not followed and human error occurred in the execution of our duties," Sullivan told lawmakers after the incident.

Sullivan struck a similar tone in May when he apologized to lawmakers for the behavior of the Secret Service employees in Colombia, insisting that the incident was not indicative of a larger culture problem at the agency.

Sullivan's retirement is effective Feb. 22. His replacement has not been announced.

In an internal message Sullivan sent to employees Friday, he said he was "extremely proud to have had the opportunity to work with the men and women of the Secret Service and represent an agency so deserving of its reputation as one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the world."

Sullivan joined the Secret Service in 1983 after three years as a special agent in the Inspector General's Office at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was appointed director in 2006.

Despite the scandals and questions from lawmakers, he maintained support from Obama, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and numerous lawmakers.

"I want to thank Mark Sullivan for nearly 30 years of service to our nation at the United States Secret Service, a tenure that saw the agency protect five first families including my own," Obama said in a statement. "And since 2006, as director, Mark has led the agency with incredible dedication and integrity."

Napolitano thanked Sullivan for his service. "His commitment to keeping our country and its top officials safe is unparalleled and his devotion to the mission of the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security has been unwavering," she said in a statement.

In three decades with the Secret Service, Sullivan's career took him to Detroit, Columbus, Ohio, and ultimately Washington, where he served on the security detail for President George H.W. Bush.

Sullivan, who is from a large Irish Catholic family, has been married to his wife, Laurie, for more than 20 years, and they have three daughters. He loves hockey and played in an adult league until a few years ago.

"If you were casting someone for the role of director of the Secret Service, he looks the part," Sullivan's former boss in the service's Detroit division, James Huse, told the AP last year. "He's a tall, handsome Irishman, with grey hair and the demeanor of a born leader."

Video of police abuse stokes anger in Egypt

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Interior Minister vowed Saturday to investigate the beating of a naked man by riot police that threatened to further inflame popular anger against security forces, but suggested that initial results absolve the police of direct abuse.

The beating was caught on camera and broadcast live on television late Friday as protests raged in the streets outside the presidential palace. Video showed police trying to bundle the naked man into a police van after beating him.

Less than 24 hours after the incident, several thousand anti-government demonstrators marched again on the palace Saturday denouncing the police and Islamist President Mohammed Morsi after a week of violent protests that claimed more than 60 lives nationwide.

Speaking to reporters after Friday's assault, Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said that initial results from the public prosecutor's investigation show that 48-year-old Hamada Saber was undressed by "rioters" during skirmishes between police and protesters. He was then hit in the foot by a bird shot, the interior minister said, stopping short of saying if the injury was a result of police firing into the crowds.

"The central security forces then found him lying on the ground and tried to put him in an armored vehicle, though the way in which they did that was excessive," said Ibrahim.

In the footage from Friday, at least seven black-clad riot police beat Saber, whose pants are down around his ankles, with sticks before dragging him along the muddy pavement and tossing him into a police van.

The beating happened as thousands of protesters chanted against Morsi, throwing firebombs and firing flares at the presidential palace as police pumped volleys of tear gas and bird shot into the crowd, killing one protester and wounding more than 90.

The Interior Ministry said in a rare statement that it "regrets" the beating, and that it too is investigating the incident. But it also sought to distance itself ? and the police in general ? from the abuse, saying that "what took place was carried out by individuals that do not represent in any way the doctrine of all policemen who direct their efforts to protecting the security and stability of the nation and sacrifice their lives to protect civilians."

A statement by Morsi's office called the incident "shocking", but stressed that violence and vandalism of government property is unacceptable.

Ibrahim said nearly 400 policemen have been wounded this past week, warning that the disintegration of police will lead to even wider-spread chaos in the Arab world's most populous nation.

"The collapse of police will affect Egypt and transform it into a militia state like some neighboring nations," Ibrahim said, eluding to Libya where militias comprise the bulk of security after that nation's uprising.

Already some Islamists have warned they could set up militias to protect their interests, while a group calling itself "Black Bloc" whose followers wear black masks claim to defend protesters opposed to the Islamist president's rule.

Ibrahim is the fifth interior minister to head the security force in the past two years. Distraught police officers heckled him earlier in the week when he showed up for the funeral of two officers killed last weekend, angry over attacks against them and investigations into their use of power after decades of near impunity under ousted leader Hosni Mubarak.

Rights groups have accused Morsi of not taking steps to reform the Interior Ministry, which was long the backbone of Mubarak's regime. Police under Mubarak were notorious for using excessive force against protesters and beating those in custody. The uprising against his rule erupted in early 2011 in large part out of anger against widespread police powers and impunity.

In a defining image of post-Mubarak violence against protesters, Egyptians were outraged last year when military police were caught on camera dragging a veiled woman through the streets during a protest, pulling her conservative black robe over her head and revealing her blue bra.

Protesters and rights groups have most recently accused police of using excessive force this past week during a wave of mass demonstrations in cities around the country called by opposition politicians, trying to wrest concessions from Morsi.

But many protesters go further, saying Morsi must be removed from office, accusing his Muslim Brotherhood of monopolizing power and failing to deal with the country's mounting woes. Many have been further angered by Morsi's praise of the security forces after the high death toll.

The chaos prompted Morsi to order a limited curfew in three provinces and the deployment of the military to the streets.

The main opposition National Salvation Front said Saturday that the "gruesome images" of Saber's beating requires the dismissal of the newly-appointed interior minister. The statement said that Ibrahim was sworn-in in early January, police have been using "excessive force" more frequently against protesters.

In an attempt to heap more political pressure on Morsi, the opposition said the assault comes as little surprise since the president called on the police to deal firmly with protesters, among them rioters.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said he visited Cairo's Tahrir Square and the area of the presidential palace Saturday, which were largely quiet after Friday's protests. He said those who are camped out there are neither protesters nor revolutionaries.

"Protesters do not torch, attack hotels, rape women, steal shops, they do not burn the presidential palace. These are not revolutionaries," he said.

In an impassioned speech Saturday carried live on Egyptian state TV, Kandil said the street violence and political unrest that has engulfed the country for more than a week is threatening the nation's already ailing economy.

"The Egyptian economy is bleeding," he said. "It is holding itself, but if this situation persists it will be dangerous, extremely dangerous. No government can govern a nation with this chaotic situation."

Foreign currency earners such as tourism and foreign investment have dried up in the past two years of political unrest. Foreign reserves currently estimate at around $15 billion, less than half of where it stood before the 2011 uprising that ousted Mubarak. The Egyptian pound has also lost around four percent of its value due to the turmoil and planned austerity measures threaten to curb subsidies relied on by millions of poor Egyptians.

Kandil called on the opposition to back away from any more protests or marches.

"The world is watching to see how we will deal," he said. "It is upon all political parties to pull their peaceful protesters from the streets now."

Also Saturday, Mubarak's former interior minister, Habib al-Adly, was found guilty of abusing his position to force police conscripts to work on his mansion and land on the outskirts of Cairo. Both he and former riot police chief, Hassan Abdel-Hamid, were sentenced to three years in prison and fined around $340,000. The verdict can be appealed.

Al-Adly is already serving time for corruption and was sentenced to life in prison with Mubarak for failing to prevent the killing of nearly 900 protesters during the 2011 revolt that ousted the longtime leader. Both men appealed, and will be given a retrial.

InfoArmy Retreats After Crowdsourced Research Business Goes ...

InfoArmy ? a startup built on the ?Data 2.0? concept of crowdsourced competitive intelligence ? has today sent out a letter, printed in full below, to its researchers informing them that it is pulling the plug on its current business model after failing to find enough sales for the research reports, and being unable to sustain the quality of the work that was being produced. As a result, it will be offering reports on its site free of charge and will no longer be paying researchers for their contributions, as it works on a pivot of the company.

?The key thing is that crowdsourcing is still a part and parcel of what we?re doing, but the way we?re doing it with this model has not worked,? CEO and founder Jim Fowler told TechCrunch. ?We got a bunch of researchers to work on this and it was a 50-50 share, but it ended up not working. The critical thing is that we?re looking at a much more crowdsourcing-like model. I remain a 100% believer in it.?

Still, the news represents a setback both for enterprise-focused crowdsourcing, and also for Fowler, who sold his previous crowdsourced enterprise startup, Jigsaw, to Salesforce for $175 million. To date, InfoArmy had raised $19.3 million from Norwest Venture Partners, Trinity Ventures and Fowler himself. It has been in operation for only about eight months.

TechCrunch learned of the news from some of the researchers. One of them noted that he ?really enjoyed? the experience at first. ?Things were smooth, a lot of committed folks were involved,? he says. But he noticed early signs of problems with sales ? not a surprise, perhaps, since there was only one salesperson hired at the company, but he noted that InfoArmy?s response was to cut the pay of researchers and claim report quality was the reason for the problem.

?I take that as a fair criticism, but given they design the system within the researchers operated, they surely could have made some tweeks to improve quality,? he said. After this came more problems with the payment system, an outsourcing move to India for some of the report editing and publishing, and lots of researcher complaints on a forum ? now, apparently, deleted.

?They regularly teased a ?big February 1st announcement? that would address all of our concerns and hopefully right the ship. Then came today?s announcement,? he noted.

The announcement goes into a lot of detail into what went wrong. ?I?m a believer in being direct and honest,? explained Fowler. ?Only then can you create a good company.? He also pointed out some of what InfoArmy plans to retain in its service when it pivots: ?We like the mobile-first philosophy, and we?ve got gorgeous reports for tablets,? he said. ?We?ve learned a lot about producing for mobile and done some great work on it.?

The letter is below.

?InfoArmy launched last June. Since that time we have worked together trying to create an innovative new business model that would allow many researchers to eventually earn income on the InfoArmy platform. Unfortunately, the current business model has several large and unfixable problems:

? Sales are not happening. So far InfoArmy has sold just 44 individual report subscriptions ($4,356). All of this revenue was distributed to researchers (InfoArmy did not take 50% as planned under the Revenue Share model).
? Almost two months ago we hired a full time sales person. He has been unsuccessful so far. Data quality is the main issue preventing sales. Common complaints include incorrect revenue estimates and competitors.
? Publication bonuses have created the wrong incentives. Some researchers have published the lowest quality reports they can get away with.

?Quarterly updates are very unpopular ? even with our best researchers. The report abandonment rate for quarterly updates is high. Updates are critical to the success of the current model. We have been unable to create a sense of report ownership across a large enough group of researchers.

?So far InfoArmy has paid $146K to researchers (averaging $23/report), and some researchers have made over $5,000 individually. We are very happy that many hard working researchers have made money. However, without a clear path to revenue this model is unsustainable.

?InfoArmy takes full responsibility for the above issues. This business model was our idea. Unfortunately it isn?t working as planned and we have to make some major changes.

?We haven?t figured it all out yet, but we believe the new model will look something like this:

? No more 50/50 Revenue Share. Members will exchange information they have for information they need.

? No more report ownership. Many different people will contribute to reports and make estimates. Reports will be updated in real time instead of quarterly.

? All reports will be free (in their current form). The object will be to create added value that can eventually be put behind a pay wall.

?For purposes of clarity, we will no longer be paying InfoArmy members for their information gathering. If you choose to continue to provide services to us under the new model, you will not be paid under the Revenue Share model or by any other means. The Terms Of Service that govern the services you provided will terminate with the final payment you receive. InfoArmy is creating an entirely new business model that will have new terms. As of today we have made all existing reports free. If you wish to remove the reports you created from the InfoArmy website please contact us at support@infoarmy.com.

?We made one final General Fund Payment on January 31st, 2013. Along with the General Fund payment we included an Appreciation Bonus to thank you again for your support. Each initial report creation was awarded $5 and each update $2. These bonuses applied regardless of whether or not you still owned the report and were split 80-20 between the PR and SR. Blackberry Link now up for grabs to sync your BB10 device and computer

Blackberry Link now up for grabs for desktop syncing of BB10 devices

If you've managed to score a Blackberry 10 device already (meaning you're likely speaking the Queen's English), you'll be able to sync it up with your desktop as soon as you can cable them together. Blackberry Link, the new name for Blackberry Desktop software, is now available for download everywhere (including the US) to backup and sync content like pictures, audio and video. Legacy handsets running version 7.1 of the OS or earlier will still require the previous Desktop app, but Playbook tablets running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 will also work with the latest version. Hit the source to grab it, and don't forget add another revision to your RIM Blackberry vocabulary.

Why John Kerry Should Treat Climate Change as a National Security Issue

For centuries, the glaciers of the Western Himalayas have fed the Indus River, which flows down the mountains through India and into Pakistan, where it runs the length of the country to the Arabian Sea. In both countries, the river is a crucial source of water for livestock, irrigation, drinking?essential to life and livelihood for millions of people.

But as climate change causes global temperatures to rise, the glaciers that feed the Indus are receding. A series of scientific reports indicates that in the coming decades, the river?s water levels could drop by as much as 40 percent. Already, some Indian policymakersare raising the idea of damming that water off for their own country. That could save the lives of millions of Indians, while threatening millions of Pakistanis. Pakistan lacks the economic, political, or conventional military leverage to retaliate against India if that happens; it matches its neighbor only in nuclear weapons.

National security agencies around the world, including the Pentagon and the CIA, are watching the situation closely, nervous that climate change could one day ignite a nuclear face-off between these two volatile neighbors.

That?s exactly the type of event John Kerry, who is set to be sworn in shortly might want to update thisas secretary of State, was referring to during his Senate confirmation hearing, when he called climate change a ?life-threatening issue? of national security. Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, has long been a so-called climate hawk, framing his drive to stop global warming in terms of curbing a force that inflames conflicts around the world to the detriment of U.S. safety.

In an impassioned Senate floor speech in August, Kerry compared the potential peril from climate change to the threat of war. ?I believe that the situation we face [with climate change] is as dangerous as any of the sort of real crises that we talk about? in Iran, Syria, and other trouble spots, he said.

He has taken plenty of heat for that view from Republicans, many of whom question the science of human-caused climate change, scoff at any link to national security, and say that solving global warming is the wrong priority for the nation?s chief diplomat. But defense and intelligence officials say the link between climate change and national security is clear, dangerous, and urgent?and a raft of national security experts say it?s high time the nation?s top foreign policy official treated it as such.

In its 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review, the Pentagon identified climate change as a major ?threat multiplier.? While climate change itself doesn?t cause wars, it can, like a spark on dry tinder, exacerbate already volatile circumstances.

Around the globe, climate change contributes to rising sea levels, more-intense drought, and food and water scarcity. Already, swaths of land in Africa and the Middle East have become too barren to support crops, and scientists warn far worse is to come as the globe continues to heat up in the coming century.

Security experts say the slow but steady spread of the Sahara through Mali, killing crops and leaving farmers starving, may have been a contributing force in the jihadist uprising in that African country last year?an uprising that has taken many lives and led to a deadly hostage-taking at a gas plant in neighboring Algeria in January.

?If you look at the Sahel band in Africa?Mali, Niger, Somalia, Egypt?you?re finding more and more jihadists there, in an area which is already unstable. And climate change compounds that instability,? said Drew Sloan, a veteran of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, who works closely with the Truman National Security Project and has briefed President Obama on climate issues. ?As climate change makes those dry areas get drier, as crops are threatened, you take away people?s ability to farm, take away their food, and then you present an alternative to that,? he said. ?It presents a recruitment opportunity for jihadists, who can also blame the problem on the gluttony of America.?

Climate change has also set off what?s predicted to become a towering wave of ?climate migrants? in vulnerable and volatile parts of the world. Rising sea levels are expected to displace an estimated 20 million people in Bangladesh; the first waves of migrants are already fleeing flooding and destruction in the low-lying nation. Andrew Guzman, an economist and international legal expert at the University of California (Berkeley), says this torrent of ?climate migrants? will heighten border tensions, create vast new refugee camps, and send displaced people streaming into cities in need of shelter and basic human services?in numbers that could create a humanitarian crisis for which nobody is prepared.

The question, however, is what the chief U.S. diplomat can actually do about climate change. Although no single official, or nation, can solve the problem alone, Kerry will be uniquely positioned to broker action through diplomacy. In France in 2015, the world?s nations are set to sign a global treaty that would legally bind them to cut their global-warming pollution. Much of the world views the success of the treaty as largely resting in American hands. If the United States acts to cut its carbon emissions?either through legislation or, as seems far more likely, through Obama?s use of executive authority and regulations issued by the Environmental Protection Agency?the country will be well positioned to broker a global climate deal.

While the secretary of State can?t control EPA, he can, as first among equals in the Cabinet, quietly counsel the president to act on emissions regulations. To the rest of the world, says Charlie Ebinger, an energy and foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution, Kerry ?can sound the clarion call. He can convey that the U.S. will take moral leadership on this.?
