Amazon to start collecting sales tax in New Jersey beginning July of next year
Taxes. Taxes. Taxes. That's what you folks living within the Garden State will have to pay on Amazon purchases starting July 2013. The recent news -- which is likely to cause some of you to throw a minor temper tantrum -- comes shortly after Jeff Bezos & Co. settled with the Texas government to also begin collecting sales tax in that state. Similar to the Lone Star deal, though, Amazon's agreed to create about 1,500 full-time jobs by building a couple of distribution centers in New Jersey -- and let's face it, job creation is always good news. Sorry, but looks like the Jersey Shore crew will have to spend a couple extra bucks the next time they place an order for that weekly stock of tanning lotion.

I never thought these words would ever come out of my mouth but here they are ? I manage thousands of domains on behalf of my clients and thank goodness a good many of those clients have had the sense to ask me WTF?? after they have received a domain reminder email from a?third?party, telling them or making it appear as if their domain name is expiring and requesting payment.
Below is a screen shot of one good example which can easily fool someone without experience of online scams.
The sender has sent the domain owner an ?authentic looking? expiration notice which is very carefully worded, probably?to avoid it being 100% illegal. (another good reason to protect your privacy online with private whois)
The sender makes the email look as if ?the actual domain name is about to expire, when in fact they are telling the domain owner, in the smaller text, that the ?registration? is for ??submission services?, which are in fact non existant, the domain owner had never signed up to anything in the first place.
Basically the scammer is preying on the innocence of the domain owner and giving them a scare into divulging their credit card details by asking them to PROCESS SECURE?PAYMENT.

So, the unknowing domain owner clicks on the PROCESS SECURE PAYMENT link in the anticipation that they will be?renewing?their domain/se services for another year and are in fact taken to a NON SECURE page where they are asked to provide their credit card details.
Below is another screen shot of the ?payment page? where you can see there is ZERO SECURITY on the page and in fact, the scammer?s web page is fraudulently using TRUSTe.com logos in order to suck the domain owner into thinking the payment is secure, when the truth is its TOTALLY un secure and open for abuse.
I would imagine that if the domain owner submits his credit card details on this page, that the credit card would not only be charged for that amount shown on the page, but the card details would more than likely be sold to the scammers? partners which would most probably?be a criminal network who would use the credit card details to buy other goods, sell those goods for cash to fund their other illegal criminal operations such as child trafficking, buying guns, drugs or worse.
Although this innocent looking email looks like its a legitimate reminder, the consequences of submitting your details online to un secure pages on the internet, can land you in some inconvenience and provide criminals means and opportunity to expand their?enterprises.
When in doubt, always ask someone you trust.

Emerging from daylong discussions on May 25 about the future of the Anglican Church of Canada, members of the Council of General Synod (CoGS) appeared to lack ideas about what the next steps should be.
In fact, members expressed feeling ?overwhelmed? by the question of how to renew church structures.
Archbishop Fred Hiltz, primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, said that instead of hearing new ideas, he heard a lot of familiar ones following reports coming out of small group discussion. Further, he said he wasn?t convinced that members were grasping the urgency of our situation.
?We need to address [the issue] of finances and structure?I felt at times we were going up to it and then we stepped back,? said Hiltz. ?Things must change if we?re going to go ahead in the spirit of the Marks of Mission.?
Members had been divided into small, more intimate type of dialogue known as ?World Caf?? as part of the Council?s goal to ?consider clear directions and a plan for the efficient utilization of financial, staff and structural resources in the achievement of the priorities and practices set aside in Vision 2019.?
Hiltz acknowledged that the intent was merely ?to open the conversation and identify the challenges we face.? More focused conversations and courses of action are expected in meetings leading up to the 2013 Joint Lutheran-Anglican National Assembly. 2013
Members were asked to consider the following questions:
* How might God be using the current financial situation of General Synod to tell us about our future in carrying out Vision 2019?
* What might the Holy Spirit be telling us about ourselves as we grapple with the complexities of our current governance and structural challenges?
* How might Jesus be leading us on a journey of spiritual renewal through the presence of indigenous peoples among us, and their witness in the Mississauga Declaration.
Some themes emerged. In conversations about finance, members prescribed that General Synod, the church?s governing body, ?clearly and proactively articulate its unique mission and ministry? to Anglicans across Canada. Stewardship education is ?essential? in helping improve the church?s financial stability, they said. Some members expressed a desire to ?reframe current discussions? around finances, emphasizing that Anglicans must move from ?a taxpayer to citizen mentality.? The church is not the national office in Toronto but ?all local ministry in Canada,? and it is ?a community not a bureaucracy,? they said.
On the issue of governance, members said they ?felt overwhelmed? because of the ?complexity? of the structures. ?Some said there is no mechanism to evaluate what?s in place, while others said future structures need to be ?nimble and flexible.? There are structures that are ?working well,? but members also recognize that in some places, they need to be overhauled due to financial constraints. Significant changes that are taking place in some parts of the church have been largely inspired and ushered in by indigenous ministries, others noted.
Members said they have learned a lot about spirituality and renewal through General Synod?s partnership with the Anglican Council of Indigenous Peoples (ACIP).? Others said that lack of knowledge about the partnership has impeded growth in the relationship. Some ?resisted grouping all non-indigenous people together,? the report added.
Council members had an opportunity to speak further when they formed a sacred circle after the reports were heard. A number noted that there was more ?openness? in the life of the church.
Archbishop Colin Johnson observed that Council wrestled with issues ?in a way that moved from blame and despair into much more engaged, if not hopeful and forward-looking? mode. US Feature: Bad Business --- A Tale of Baseball, Video Games, and a Falling Hero
Before the Fall: Curt SchillingIn 2004, Curt Schilling became a legend in Boston. Playing on a badly-injured ankle, he helped the Red Sox achieve one of the greatest comebacks in baseball history to defeat the hated New York Yankees in the semi-finals. The Red Sox then won the "World Series" --- Boston's first title in 86 years --- over the St Louis Cardinals.
And then was more: in 2007, Schilling's pitching took the Sox win to another World Series, finally changing the course of the Sox/Yankees rivalry after decades of cursed frustration for Bostonians.
Imagine the frustration, then, of many Boston fans when their hero badmouthed some of their best-loved politicians and used his fame to campaign for Republican candidates. And then you can appreciate the Schadenfreude at Schilling's failure to launch a successful computer game company.
As Robert Miller points out on The Boston Gamer, however, the reaction to Shilling's recent failure is a lot more than gloating or political squabbling. The collapse of 38 Studios has exposed the hypocrisy of politically-active citizens, the unscrupulous behavior of famous people with more money than brains, and the deeply flawed inner-workings of State Government and its business practices.
We all know the story of 38 Studios by now. Curt Schilling helped win two world series championships for the Boston Red Sox and now he had a dream: to create a gaming company and make a groundbreaking MMO that will be the best anyone has ever seen. What resulted, however, was more like a nightmare.
Schilling left the Red Sox after making $8 million in his last full season. He started 38 studios and began to hire people to work on his new (and only) IP: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. He invested $3 million of his own money in order to get the company started (his net worth is $60 million) and set up shop in Massachusetts. In short order, 38 studios grew to over 400 employees and the company was in the end-run of the development of the game.
In November 2010, Schilling moved the company to Rhode Island to utilize a $75 million loan from the government at low interest (but, apparently, extremely high risk). Finally, the game was released on February 7, 2012 and sold 1.2 million copies. By May, however, unable to repay their loan to Rhode Island, and unable to make payroll, the entire staff of 38 studios was laid off.
Enter the first, and perhaps most glaring, problem - According to the Governor of Rhode Island, 38 Studios would need to sell 3 million copies of the game in order to have any return on investment. To put this in perspective, Final Fantasy XIII, a successful installment of an historically franchise, sold 4.82 million copies and is the thirteenth game in the series. For any startup company to expect to sell 3 million copies of a game with a new IP is, quite frankly, an insane notion.
There are lots of questions regarding where the studio went wrong, but there are a few things that have stuck out as red flags for the entire situation.
What does this show about what type of person Schilling truly is? While he was still playing for the Red Sox, he spoke out about his personal beliefs during the 2004 elections (Schilling actively campaigned for then President Bush?s reelection). His endorsement of such politicians as former President Bush, Senators Scott Brown and John McCain clearly indicate his Republican-leaning beliefs. The standpoints that all of these politicians have in common is the want for a smaller government. They believe that the government should stay out of people?s personal lives and shouldn?t be interfering with private businesses.
This completely contradicts Schilling?s history with 38 Studios, as his company not only willingly accepted, but campaigned to receive $75 million from the government. Furthermore, once Schilling received the money from the loan, he immediately repaid himself the $3 million that he initially put in. As a result, his company?s failure doesn?t affect him financially whatsoever. Now, while it is perfectly understandable that reimbursement should be given over the course of time, Schilling has shown that he values his own financial gains over those of his company or its employees. Instead of re-investing cash into his company to continue his ?dream? of creating this new world of Amalur, he made decisions that bankrupted his company, failed to repay the state of Rhode Island, and has led to the layoff of more than 400 employees.
This development will put huge economic strain on not only the employees themselves, but the government as well. The state of Rhode Island now has to pay 400 people unemployment for upwards of 99 weeks, has given a company $75 million for investments that it cannot pay back (money which could be allocated to paying unemployment for said employees), and increases the unemployment rate in a state that is already under tremendous financial and economic stress.
Oh, and how did he let the employees know they were fired? A cold, calculated email to inform all of his employees that they are officially laid off as of that day:
"The Company is experiencing an economic downturn. To avoid further losses and possibility of retrenchment, the Company has decided that a company-wide lay off is absolutely necessary.
These layoffs are non-voluntary and non-disciplinary.
This is your official notice of lay off, effective today, Thursday, May 24th, 2012."
The outcome of this calamity is that Curt Schilling is the only person who has made out at all from the failure of his company. He has recently taken to twitter to promote the upcoming game in the Armalur series (code named Copernicus) and to try and make the case that he never received a bailout. Jason Mayo (@jay_mayo) asked, ?Does that mean you're going to pay back your govt bail out money?? His response: Haven't received a penny of it, and have not asked for any.? The hypocrisy of this statement is astounding.
As an avid gamer and a Red Sox fan, I find myself enraged on multiple levels. Why didn?t 38 Studios start out with a smaller project (ala Minecraft, Braid, or I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1)? Why didn?t they sell themselves out to other game companies to aid with the creation of their own games (Treyarch with Call of Duty: World at War, DICE with Battlefield 3, etc.)? Why didn?t Schilling invest more of his own money or seek funding from other professional athletes who also enjoy gaming? There are a million different things he could have done with his company to keep it afloat. The reality is that there are nearly 400 people who are unemployed in Rhode Island right now while their boss sits comfortably on a bed made of $60 million. If the game made money, he was set to make millions. It didn?t and Curt Shilling shares absolutely none of that pain. While some may make the argument that Schilling may have just been a bad businessman, this goes FAR beyond that.
Schilling isn?t the only one who deserves criticism, however. The state of Rhode Island loaned this money to the company without doing enough investigating into the business model of the company. By all accounts, the game?s reviews ranged from above-average to great, and its sales were extremely competitive for an initial release. Furthermore, the game received widespread publicity before this calamity just because of Curt Shilling?s name being associated with it. Anyone who knew what the company was planning to do and how much the company had spent on creating this game (which the government would have access to during the negotiations for the loan) and didn?t question the business model of 38 Studios deserves to be fired immediately.
The victims of this hypocrisy and insanity are the employees and the citizens of Rhode Island who had nothing to do with the collapse and mismanagement of this company. Thankfully, other companies are contacting former employees and telling them to apply to gaming jobs with them. However, that is not a guarantee of work. I truly hope that Schilling does the right thing and make amends with his past, but my hopes are not high. I, for one, will go out of my way to never support anything that Curt Schilling does for as long as I have breath in my lungs and a pulse in my body.
To quote Thomas Jefferson, ?All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.? Let us not be silent on this matter? while too many workers are unemployed, there may be many other famous people looking to 38 Studios as the perfect model, as opposed to a fantastic nightmare.

Diabetics May Need Early Colon Cancer Screening | Help For ...

In a single-center study, diabetics, ages 40 to 49, had a comparable number of adenomas detected as healthy patients, ages 50 to 59, Hongha Vu, MD, of Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and colleagues reported at a press briefing during Digestive Disease Week (DDW).
?These patients appear to be at the same risk level as those ages 50 to 59,? Vu said, cautioning, however, that larger, prospective trials are needed before guidelines can be changed.
Currently, colorectal cancer screening in the U.S. is recommended to start in healthy patients at age 50, though at-risk groups, such as blacks and patients with a family history of disease, should start earlier.
Type 2 diabetes has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal neoplasia, but these patients are not currently recognized as an official at-risk population for earlier screening.
In order to determine if type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing colorectal adenomas in younger diabetic patients, Vu and colleagues conducted a retrospective study of patients who?d had a colonoscopy at their center between June 2005 and June 2011.
They assessed three cohorts:
- Patients, ages 40 to 49, with diabetes
- Those ages 40 to 49 without diabetes
- Healthy patients, ages 50 to 59
A total of 3,749 patients, ages 40 to 49, had a colonoscopy during that time, 125 of whom had diabetes. Vu noted that these younger patients had their colonoscopies for diagnostic purposes, to investigate symptoms such as pain or diarrhea.
The researchers matched patients from the other two cohorts to the diabetes cohort for date of exam and gender.
They found that the adenoma detection rate in the diabetes group was similar to that of healthy patients who started screening at age 50 (30.4% versus 32%).
Those rates were far higher than adenomas detected in patients ages 40 to 49 without diabetes (14.4%), they reported.
That translated to a significantly higher adenoma detection rate for diabetics compared with younger patients without diabetes (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.5 to 5.3) and compared with healthy controls, ages 50 to 59 (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.5 to 5.3).
Those odds ratios were increased after adjustment for several factors including gender, indication, race, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, tobacco, alcohol, and body mass index (OR 15.3, 95% CI 1.8 to 132.3, P=0.01, and OR 14.1, 95% CI 1.6 to 126.6, P=0.02, respectively).
Vu said the study was limited by its retrospective nature, and again emphasized that larger, prospective studies will be needed before any official guideline recommendations can be made for colon screening in diabetic patients.
John Petrini, MD, of the Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, Calif., who moderated the DDW press briefing said researchers will ?probably want to see at least one confirmatory study and one prospective study.?
That way, he said, ?you?ll have more info to go with to the third party payers?to get them to agree to the screening [this patient population].?
The researchers reported no conflicts of interest.

Drunk birds had one-too-many berries to blame
After overindulging in berries, flocks of cedar waxwings flew drunkenly to their doom. That's the conclusion of a new report in the Journal of Ornithology.
Cedar waxwings have evolved to live on a diet that averages 84 per cent fruit. But those evolutionary innovations backfired on several occasions between 2005 and 2007 when flocks of them died after crashing into windows and fences in broad daylight in the Los Angeles area.
Residents puzzled by the deaths sent the bodies to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory in San Bernardino. Necropsies performed by Hailu Kinde and colleagues at the lab showed the birds had been healthy when they gorged on berries from the Brazilian pepper tree, then died from ruptured livers or other traumas caused by the collisions.
Flocking hell
Cedar waxwings have the most fruit-rich diet of all North American birds, and dining on overripe berries can leave them visibly tipsy. Their short intestines can process large volumes of fruit, and their large livers ? about 5 per cent of body mass ? can break down toxic ethanol before it causes serious damage.
Yet although earlier studies had found isolated birds that had died from collisions when flying drunk, no one had seen whole flocks careen to their doom.
Now Kinde and colleagues report that the downfall of the flocks came from eating too many berries. Lacking a crop ? the expandable pouch near the throat used to store food ? waxwings stow meals in a distensible oesophagus. "When the fruit stays in the oesophagus, it ferments and produces ethanol," says Kinde.
The waxwings had ingested so many berries that their large livers "could not keep up with the alcohol produced by the fermentation", with ethanol concentration as high as 1000 parts per million. By the time they finished stuffing themselves with berries, they were too drunk to fly safely.

Invasive species underwater: Deep sea animals stowaway on submarines and reach new territory
ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Marine scientists studying life around deep-sea vents have discovered that some hardy species can survive the extreme change in pressure that occurs when a research submersible rises to the surface. The team's findings, published in Conservation Biology, reveal how a species can be inadvertently carried by submersibles to new areas, with potentially damaging effects on marine ecosystems.
After using the manned submersible Alvin to collect samples of species from the Juan de Fuca Ridge under the northeastern Pacific Ocean, the team discovered 38 deep-sea limpets (Lepetodrilus gordensis) among their sample. Intriguingly this species is believed to occur only in the vents of the Gorda Ridge, which are 635 km south of the dive site.
"The big question was, how did they get over 600 kilometers from their habitat?" said Dr. Janet Voight, from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. "We discovered that the individuals must have been transported from the Gorda Ridge by our submersible. Even though we clean the submersibles after sampling we had assumed that the extreme pressure change would kill any species which are missed."
The introduction of new species to an ecosystem by humans, often inadvertently, is a big challenge to conservation. How a new species will react to new surroundings, and the effect it can have, is unpredictable. Increases in deep-sea drilling and submersible activity can increase the probability of introductions, but until now hydrothermal vents have been considered too extreme and too isolated to be a source of introduced species.
In coastal environments one of the biggest threats posed by invasive species to native species is disease, as newly introduced pathogens and parasites can cause mass mortality. Diseases that may exist in the extreme environments created by hydrothermal vents have not been well studied.
"We've discovered that it is possible to accidently introduce a species, and any potential diseases it may carry, from a deep-sea vent to a new location," concluded Voight. "This has implications for the future exploration of hydrothermal vents as it reveals the potential risk of human driven change to the ecosystem."
