Samsung Galaxy Camera review: Hands-on

The Samsung Galaxy Camera sports an Android Jelly Bean OS, along with a touchscreen and Wi-Fi connectivity for uploading directly to the web

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is the brand's first Android-powered digital camera and joins the recently announced Nikon Coolpix S800C in the Android camera camp.

Sporting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the camera features built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity along with a 21x optical zoom and an HD touchscreen.

The camera body itself isn't the smallest we've seen, but it fits comfortably in the hand and the the textured grip means that it feels secure.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: Controls

Thanks to the presence of a touchscreen, physical controls are kept to a minimum, and you won't find much beyond the shutter release and power buttons. There's a top-mounted zoom control, but the zoom can also be controlled using the touchscreen.

The camera also features voice control for basic functions such as 'Shoot' and 'Zoom in', but we didn't get the chance to try this out on the busy Samsung stand at IFA.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: Screen

Samsung describes the HD LCD touchscreen as "the world?s largest and most vivid camera display", and at 4.77 inches, and it certainly looks good. We were impressed by the clarity and brightness of the screen, in fact we're surprised that no brand has put such a good quality screen on a camera until now.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: Android

Powered by a quadcore processor, the camera runs on the latest version of Android (Jelly Bean) so that that the user interface feels more like that of a smartphone than a camera. The graphical UI is easy to navigate around, and will let you choose from a variety of settings including Auto and manual modes.

You can also download apps from Google Play including Instagram and Facebook so that you'll be able to upload directly to all your social networks, in a couple of easy steps.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: Picture quality

?

The Galaxy Camera has a 16-Megapixel 1/2.3? BSI CMOS sensor, along with a 23mm lens for wide angle shots. The brand's 'Smart Pro? technology comprises a series of modes that have been designed to get professional results, without the hard work. A series of preset modes are there to help you: depending on the shooting situation, this will automatically adjust your settings for you.

We reeled off a few quick test shots on the Samsung stand and they looked excellent on the large bright screen, but obviously this is something we'll be looking at more closely in our full review.

The camera will be available as a 3G and Wi-Fi model or a 4G and Wi-Fi version.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: Verdict

While we were initially skeptical about the need for an Android-based camera, we were impressed with the Samsung Galaxy Camera. We particularly liked the snapper's physical design as well as the large, HD screen. We looking forward to testing the camera out in the wild.

Taylor's ton keeps Kiwis afloat at tea

Bangalore, Aug 31

Skipper Ross Taylor led a New Zealand fightback with an unbeaten century as the visitors went to tea at a healthy 240/5 on the first day of the second cricket Test against India here Friday.

In the second session, the Kiwis added 132 runs to their lunch total of 108/3 even as the Indian attack wilted under Taylor?s onslaught.

Earlier on, it was opener Martin Guptill (53, 79b, 8x4) who held the innings together after being let off when on 17, as Virat Kohli at third slip dropped a regulation catch.

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who opened the bowling in the morning along with Zaheer Khan, picked up three of the five wickets, while the veteran seamer and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took one apiece.

The Kiwis recovered from a tentative start when they lost three wickets for 89 in the pre-lunch session as Taylor adopted an aggressive posture with a sparkling innings.

Taylor and Daniel Flynn (33) put on 107 runs for the fourth wicket, before the latter fell to a brilliant catch by Suresh Raina while attempting to drive Ojha.

It was Taylor (112 not out, 119b, 16x4, 2x6) who set a hectic pace after lunch with a series of shots all around the wicket as he comfortably negotiated the Indian bowling that seemed to flag.

Ojha, who came in for some stick, got rid of Guptill, Kane Williamson (17) and James Franklin (8) while Zaheer struck early by removing Brendon McCullum and Ashwin removed Franklin to leave the game evenly poised at tea.

Reunion with boat that crossed Atlantic ? alone

The "Queen Bee" boat that was lost in the Atlantic Ocean nearly four years ago returns to North Carolina after washing ashore in Spain. WITN's Dan Yesenosky reports.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

Four years after a strong wave tossed them off their yellow fishing boat, Queen Bee, off the coast of Nantucket, Mass., Scott Douglas and his brother in law, Rich St. Pierre, climbed aboard again -- in a North Carolina parking lot.

In January, the U.S. Coast Guard called Douglas to tell him that the vessel, a 26-foot center console fishing boat made by Regulator, had washed up on the Spanish coast. It?was rusty and covered in barnacles, but intact. Almost six months later, the North Carolina boatmaker retrieved the Queen Bee and brought it back to Edenton, where Douglas and St. Pierre were finally reunited with it Tuesday.

3 years after US accident, boat washes up in Spain

"It?s difficult to put yourself back ? in that frame of mind, but getting on the boat was definitely emotional,? Douglas, 59, of Connecticut, told NBC News. ?I was on the boat, it was a near-death experience. You don?t get to relive those things too often and, in many ways actually, you don?t want to relive them.?

Jeremy Groves

Scott Douglas (right) and Rich St. Pierre reunite with the Queen Bee in Edenton, N.C., on Aug. 28, 2012.

It was an overcast and windy August 2008 day, and the two men were out fishing. St. Pierre, 69, was at the helm, and the water was restless. Waves crashed into the boat, rocking it, and a rogue one knocked the two men into the water.

Douglas remembers thinking the water was not too cold.?"The only way I was going to survive was just to get started, not tread water," he told NBC News in January.?

The men made their way to shore, swimming more than one mile, and catching one last glimpse of the Queen Bee. It looked "pretty happy," rocking side to side, sailing away from its owner, Douglas said.

?I think she tried to do what she could do and then she decided to go on a trip,? he added. "We wish this boat could tell the story.?

Lt. Joe Klinker, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman, told NBC News in January that the most likely scenario is that the boat somehow got out into the Gulf Stream.

The boat of a man who was tossed off his vessel in the waters off Nantucket more than three years ago has washed up in Spain. WNBC-TV's Katy Tur reports.

"From there it may drift north off the coast of northern Canada and then east with the North Atlantic currents," Klinker told NBC News.

Based on salvage law, the boat belonged to Spain, but it didn't want it. The Spanish government released it to the insurance company, which released it to Douglas, who, in turn, relinquished it to Regulator. Co-owner and President Joan Maxwell told NBC News she couldn't believe how good the boat's condition was.

How the Queen Bee used to look: A 26-foot yellow center console fishing boat made by Regulator.

"Unbelievable to think that a boat could survive in the Atlantic for three and a half years," she said.

"We have no clue what this boat encountered in the time frame that it was gone."

?

The seats still had their cushions, and the company was able to trade in the boat's batteries, Maxwell said. A nickel was found in the glove compartment. The port side looked as though it might have been hit, but with a new engine, the Queen Bee could sail again, Maxwell said.

U.S. Coast Guard

A boat that was lost at sea off the coast of Massachusetts in 2008 washed up on the coast of Spain more than three years later.

Regulator, which employs about 70 people and has been in business since 1988, plans to show off the boat at exhibits and shows this fall.

St. Pierre, who now lives in Nantucket and says he is nowhere near as comfortable on the water as he used to be, told NBC News he has written a draft of a children's book chronicling the imagined adventures of the Queen Bee.

"The story about the boat has captured everybody?s imagination. You can imagine just what must have happened to it in those three and a half years," he said.

Rush of asylum-seekers before Australian crackdown

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australia calls it a "closing-down sale" for people smugglers: Asylum-seekers in rickety boats have been reaching its shores in record numbers to avoid a tougher new deportation policy the country is preparing to implement. For many migrants, the price of haste may be death.

About 150 people were aboard an overcrowded, wooden fishing boat that sank off the Indonesia coast as it headed for a remote Australian island. Only 22 people had been rescued by Thursday evening, and the captain of one rescue vessel believes he saw bodies in the water.

The emergency was the latest created by a growing human smuggling trade in which thousands of would-be refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka attempt dangerous sea voyages from Indonesia to Australia.

Australia's center-left Labor Party government announced plans this month to deter future arrivals by deporting new asylum seekers who arrive by boat to the Pacific atoll of Nauru or to Australia's nearest neighbor, Papua New Guinea. The government says they will be held in tent camps for as long as they would spend in refugee camps if they had not paid people smugglers to take them to Australia.

The new approach will begin when the Nauru camp opens in September, but meanwhile the rush is on. More than 1,900 people have arrived in Australia in August ? the highest monthly total on record ? in hopes of accelerating a refugee claims process that can take years.

The numbers have been steadily climbing: More than 9,800 asylum seekers have arrived this year, more than double the total for all of 2011.

"People smugglers are running a closing-down sale," Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said. He predicts asylum seekers will stop paying people smugglers $10,000 or more to transport them more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Indonesia or Malaysia by boat if they are not guaranteed that they will be accepted by Australia.

A previous conservative government established camps in Nauru and Papua New Guinea a decade ago as part of a policy that slowed boat arrivals to a trickle but was condemned by human rights groups as cruel.

A Labor government closed the camps after winning elections in 2007, a year when only 339 asylum seekers arrived by boat. As the numbers have grown, the influx, and the deaths of would-be migrants at sea, have angered many Australians.

No asylum-seeker deaths have been confirmed since the policy change was announced, but more than 300 have lost their lives making the perilous journey across the Sunda Strait between Indonesia and the Australian territory of Christmas Island since December. More than 90 of them died in two boat accidents that occurred within a week of each other in June.

Authorities also fear the worst for 67 asylum seekers who have not contacted family or friends since they left Indonesia on an Australia-bound boat in late June.

In the latest incident, a boat reportedly carrying 150 asylum seekers sank off the main Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday.

The crew of a merchant ship taking part in the search, Liberian-flagged APL Bahrain, spotted survivors in the water early Thursday 75 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Java and rescued six, Clare said.

"There are grave fears for a lot more," Clare told reporters.

The Bahrain's captain, Manuel Nistorescu, told the Fairfax Media website that he was about to abandon the late-night search when he heard whistles and yelling from the dark water.

Nistorescu said the six rescued, all Afghan men, appeared to be in good condition and had been in the water for almost 24 hours. There were also women and children aboard the asylum-seeker boat when it sank, he said.

He added that he believed he saw bodies in the water. "I think I saw some of them dead," he said.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority said a navy patrol boat later retrieved another 16 survivors, and an aircraft crew had spotted more survivors in the water.

Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said other merchant ships, Australian military aircraft and Indonesian government ships also were involved in the search.

Australian authorities received a call by satellite phone early Wednesday from someone aboard the missing boat requesting help. The person said there were 150 people aboard and the vessel had engine trouble. The boat was then 15 kilometers (9 miles) off Java, officials said.

Indonesian authorities launched a search with two boats and a helicopter but found no trace of the boat by late Wednesday.

Australia alerted Indonesia to the initial distress call, alerted shipping companies to look out for the boat and offered information including estimates of where the boat might have drifted. Meehan said Australia had offered ships and aircraft to help the Indonesians search Wednesday, but the offer was not taken up at the time.

Gagah Prakoso, spokesman for the Indonesian Search And Rescue Agency, denied that Indonesia had refused any offer of help.

"This is a humanitarian mission and Indonesia will never reject offers from any country including Australia," Prakoso said.

Clare, who is the minister responsible for Australian rescue authorities, said Indonesia should not be criticized for failing to find survivors on Wednesday.

"It is very hard to find people that are in distress on a little wooden boat in the middle of the Sunda Strait," he said.

Yopie Haryadi, an official of the Indonesian Search And Rescue Agency, said an Indonesian rescue boat and two helicopters had on Wednesday searched a 10-kilometer (6-mile) radius where Australian authorities said the distressed boat was located, but did not find finding wreckage or an oil spill.

The merchant ship found the first six survivors after Australia expanded the search area.

Hyundai Starting to Hog the U.S. Automotive Road | InvestorPlace

Popular Posts:

Recent Posts:

I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. The only thing holding Hyundai back is the fact that its production facilities at the time were already running near full capacity. And while the company is reportedly contemplating adding more production facilities, a decline in demand from buyers in Europe has allowed Hyundai to ship some inventory originally intended for Europe back to the U.S.

To be certain, things haven?t been all roses for Hyundai, especially recently. The company?s exports stalled in July, down some 23% because of a labor dispute that has crippled production. According to the company, the total number of Hyundai and Kia vehicles made in July sank to 120,493, a big drop from the 156,200 units made in the previous month.

Here?s the money quote from the Hyundai statement as reported by the Wall Street Journal: ?U.S. dealerships for Hyundai and Kia had some difficulty meeting soaring demand due to a shortage of vehicles.? Moreover, the company said it had less than a month of inventory remaining as of Aug. 1. That?s well below the optimal inventory levels of 60 days.

The supply constraints caused by the strike in South Korean production facilities will likely take its toll on Hyundai and Kia sales, but whatever sales disruption takes place, it will likely be a mere bump in the road for the company. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. So, if you?re an investor in U.S. auto stocks, you better keep your eyes on the rearview mirror ? because Hyundai is catching up.

As of this writing, Jim Woods did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Man, I Love Films ? HEATHER'S TOP TEN MOVIE AFFAIRS

This isn?t a topic that goes without a strong point of view usually, and even in writing and developing this list, I found my own observations to be quite different that I had imagined.? Years ago, young, naive, and hopeful, the usual denials of those already ?IN? the committed relationships, you hope that these movies, these stories are different people that are jaded and bad, but after compiling this list and having lived enough life to know better what I found most intriguing about each of these films and characters, though situations so drastically different, was that the ?cheaters?, the supposed bad guys, aren?t actually bad at all.? They?re just normal people that are making choices in each of their situations, and unfortunately those choices end badly.? But sometimes the story isn?t about the journey, it?s about where you end up.? Here are my choices for those films that I think? have really shown great different perspectives on affairs.

10. CLOSER

? Deception is brutal, I?m not pretending otherwise. ?

Julia Roberts and Jude Law?s characters have an affair over the span of many years with their spouses miserable over it.? The depreciation of all of their relationships begins with the first lie, and even though certain urges are ignored things spiral out of control when eventually everyone compromises their morals, save the catalyst for the tale played by Law.? Clive Owens character has the most to say, and the largest pawn in the mess, and the rest become victims of their own choices.

9. EYES WIDE SHUT

?No dream is ever just a dream. ?

Cruises character goes on a night of sexual exploration after his wife confesses to him that she contemplated having an affair the year before.? Relationships, sex, and fidelity are all exploited in this racy and controversial film.? The end has seemed a puzzle to many people, but I like to think after Cruises journey, he?s even more committed to his wife and now they are on the same wavelength.? Life just isn?t black and white.

8. A WALK ON THE MOON

? I don?t know, baby. Sometimes, things happen between people that make it impossible for them to stay together. ?

Diane Lane plays Pearl, a young mother with a husband who is rarely home do to work.? She gets wrapped up in her solitude and meets a mysterious sexy man played by Viggo.? They have an affair that summer, and as proven by all these noted films doesn?t go without consequence.? The sadness of Pearl only disappears when she?s with the Blouse Man, and even though what she is doing is wrong, it?s apparent where her crumbling into the arms of Viggo makes sense.

7.CHLOE

?My husband?s cheating on me. At least, I think he is. ?

Julianne Moore?s character develops paranoia that her husband is having an affair, and hires a prostitute to catch him in the act, somewhere along the way she finds herself having an affair with the young and beautiful seductress.? A strong and intelligent woman played by Moore, falling prey to simple insecurities shows that anyone can be lost in a relationship, and how even the strongest most confident of people can find weakness in themselves.
6. FATAL ATTRACTION

?Well, what am I supposed to do? You won?t answer my calls, you change your number. I mean, I?m not gonna be ignored, Dan! ?

An elicit affair that one party ends when the other isn?t ready is never going to end well, and Glenn Closes character Alex makes it clear that Michael Douglas won?t forget her.? If you?re going to have a passionate sexy affair, I?d recommend considering your partner a little more carefully than Douglas here.

5. LITTLE CHILDREN

?No, no, no. It?s not the cheating. It?s the hunger ? the hunger for an alternative and the refusal to accept a life of unhappiness. ?

In suburbia, a stay at home mom meets a stay at home dad and both connect in the realization that their mundane lives are not what they had intended.? The only solace each of them find is in each other.? The best part of the movie for me is when Winslet talks about Madame Bovary being a feminist in a way, and dumbfounding all the women in her group.? It was the most I connected with her character.

4. THE GOOD GIRL

?As a girl you see the world as a giant candy store filled with sweet candy and such. But one day you look around and you see a prison and you?re on death row. You wanna run or scream or cry but something?s locking you up. Are the other folks cows chewing cud until the hour comes when their heads roll? Or are they just keeping quiet like you, planning their escape. ?

I think what Justine hits on here is what girls who think that there is a prince charming and they are a princess will realize, is love and reality are not anything close to the ideals childhood promises fail to keep.? When she searches for that hope, she goes to a young guy that still exudes those hopes and dreams, only to realize it?s not just her husband that?s a disappointment, it?s life.

3. WAITRESS

? I don?t want you to save me. I don?t need to be saved. ?

The small town girl who feels like she has no power over her life finds solace in the charming and handsome Nathan Fillion, who is also in a relationship.? While men and women alike may disapprove of their choices, this is actually a really great story about a girl who finally finds her voice, and the person who needs to love her the most is herself.? One of the few movies I?ve listed that didn?t end badly.

2. A PERFECT MURDER

?That?s not happiness to see me is it? ?

An affair gone terribly wrong, Gwen has her sexy time with Viggo the perpetual ?other man? on this list, while Douglas has put the shoe on the other foot discovering his wife?s affair and has decided to kill her to punish her for it.? This one isn?t about love, so much as it?s about power.

1. UNFAITHFUL

?We could end this now and nobody would get hurt.?

The ultimate film of passion, jealously, and rage.?? Both Lane and Gere play their parts convincingly and make you understand the hows and the why?s something like this could happen and where a crime of passion from such a passive normal guy could come from.? Ultimately, someone does always get hurt in these situations.? Usually everyone.

Remember, we here at Man, I Love Films don?t do definitive lists. We do our favorites and we want to hear yours. So, make sure and tell us about them in the comments section below.

Key to Building Wealth: Discipline (Free Money Finance)

I've written several times about how discipline is the key characteristic to building wealth. Some examples:

Recently the blog of Dr. Thomas Stanley (author of The Millionaire Next Door) succinctly wrote about why this is the case:

Success in life and in work has been consistently tied to conscientiousness: being disciplined, having plans and focusing on details. Research in psychology consistently shows a relationship between this personality characteristic and how well someone will do on the job. Likewise, the research conducted on those with high net worth over a period of 30 years also provides insight into why they are balance sheet affluent ? they have a long-term, disciplined approach to saving, spending and investing. These individuals are not distracted by what others are doing (e.g., the Joneses).

Here's a short list of all the things it takes discipline to do:

  • Spend less than you earn.

  • Work to grow your career.

  • Earn money over and above your job.

  • Save, save, and save some more.

  • Make investments that grow over the long term.

  • Avoid bad money mistakes that can kill your finances.

In other words, it takes discipline to accomplish all the key steps that lead to growing your net worth. I think this is why so many Americans are in rough financial shape -- because they have little or no discipline when it comes to handling their money.

A lack of discipline is not the reason all people are in tough spots for sure (for instance, many disciplined people have been hit hard by the economy), but on average we live in a pretty discipline-less society. We want it all, and we want it now. Forget discipline -- give me what my neighbors, co-workers, relatives have -- or better/more than what they have.

Ugh.

But discipline is certainly the key to wealth. If there's a young person reading this today, know that if you apply discipline to how you handle your money, odds are that you will become wealthy over time. Good news: the steps (above) to take are simple. Bad news: they aren't easy.

And while discipline isn't easy, I can testify that it is certainly worth the time, effort, and sacrifice. I'm sure many others reading this post will agree as I know several of you have taken the steps above (in one form or fashion) and seen the rewards of your efforts.

The Mobile phone is one of the most used parts of equipment now. The concept of using hexagonal cells for mobile phone base stations was invented in 1947 by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T and was far developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s. Radiotelephones make a long and miscellaneous history that reaches back to the 1950s, with hand-held cellular radio devices being available since 1983. Due to their low establishment prices and quick deployment, mobile phone networks have since spread quickly throughout the public, surpassing the growth of fixed telephony

In 1945, the 0G generation of mobile telephones were innovated. OG mobile telephones such as Mobile Telephone Service were not formally categorised as mobile phones, since they did not support the automatic switch of channel frequence in the middle of a call, when the user went from one cell (base station coverage area) to another cell, a feature called "handover."

Mock-up of the "portable phone of the future," from a mid-1960s Bell System advertising, displays a device not too different from now's mobile telephones. In 1970 Amos Joel of Bell Labs made up "call handoff" that allowed a mobile phone user to change of location over several cells during the same conversation. Martin Cooper of Motorola is widely considered to be the inventor of the first working mobile phone for hand-held use in a non-vehicle setting. Using a modern, if reasonably heavy portable handset, Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973. At the time he made his call, Cooper was working as Motorola's General Manager of its Communications Division.

Fully automated cellular networks were first presented in the early to mid-1980s (the 1G generation). The first fully automatic mobile phone system was the 1981 Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system. Until the late 1980s, most mobile phones were too huge to be carried in a jacket pocket, and then they were usually permanently installed in vehicles as car phones. With the approach of miniaturization and smaller digital components, mobile phones became smaller and lighter.

Yet at present, Districsides.com, has released a cell phone watch that suits as good on your wrist as it does in the palm of hand. Size and functionality, thats the on-going stance in the phone industry. As mobile phones make more and more functions, the size and frame must also become larger and larger in order to take the hardware requirements. As a result, the mobile phones that previously sat well in our pockets are now weighing us down. Thats why wholesale electronics supplier Districsides has cell phone watch that does not sacrifice size for functionality.

In fewer than 20 years, mobile phones have became from being rare and high-priced pieces of equipment applied by businesses to a pervasive low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile phones now outnumber land-line telephones, with most adults and many youngsters now holding mobile phones. In the United States, 50% of kids own mobile phones. It is not unusual for young adults to simply own a mobile phone instead of a land-line for their residence. In some developing countries, where there is little existing fixed-line infrastructure, the mobile phone has become widespread. According to the CIA World Factbook the UK now has more numerous mobile phones than people .

With high levels of mobile telephone penetration, a mobile culture has evolved, where the phone becomes a key social tool, and people rely on their mobile phone address book to keep in touch with their friends. Many people keep in touch using SMS, and a whole culture of "texting" has evolved from this. The commercial market in SMS's is rising. Many phones even offer Instant Messenger services to increase the simplicity and ease of texting on phones.

Detroit-Area Resident Pleads Guilty in $13.8 Million Health Care Fraud

?WASHINGTON--(ENEWSPF)--August 28, 2012. ?A Detroit-area resident pleaded guilty today in federal court in the Eastern District of Michigan for his role in managing a $13.8 million psychotherapy fraud scheme, announced the Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the FBI.

Jawad Ahmad, 42, pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen in Detroit to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.? At his sentencing, scheduled for Nov. 28, 2012, Ahmad faces a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The guilty plea was announced by Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department?s Criminal Division; U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Barbara L. McQuade; Special Agent in Charge of the FBI?s Detroit Field Office Robert D. Foley III; and Special Agent in Charge Lamont Pugh III of the HHS Office of Inspector General?s (HHS-OIG) Chicago Regional Office.

According to court documents, beginning in July 2008, two of Ahmad?s co-conspirators, Tausif Rahman and Muhammad Ahmad, acquired control over a home health care company known as Physicians Choice Home Health Care LLC (Physicians Choice).? From in or around January 2009 and continuing through in or around March 2010, Jawad Ahmad managed the operations of Physicians Choice.

Court documents indicate that Jawad Ahmad managed numerous aspects of the fraud at Physicians Choice, including delivering the payment of kickbacks to beneficiary recruiters who obtained Medicare beneficiaries? information needed to bill Medicare for home health services, including physical therapy and skilled nursing, that were never rendered.? Jawad Ahmad also provided information to employees of Physicians Choice to check the billing eligibility of the Medicare beneficiaries before Physicians Choice began billing them.

In exchange for kickbacks, Medicare beneficiaries pre-signed forms and visit sheets that were later falsified to indicate they received home health services they had never received.? Jawad Ahmad delivered the pre-signed beneficiary paperwork to various medical professionals, including nurses, physical therapists and physical therapy assistants to create and/or sign fictitious patient files to document purported home health services that were never rendered.? From in or around January 2009 through in or around March 2010, Medicare paid more than $5 million for fraudulent home health care claims submitted by Physicians Choice.

According to court documents, from in or around May 2010 through in or around September 2011, Jawad Ahmad managed Phoenix Visiting Physicians PLLC, a company incorporated by co-conspirator Dr. Dwight Smith.? Dr. Smith signed home health care referrals for beneficiaries he had not seen or treated.? Phoenix employed individuals who held themselves out to be ?doctors,? but who were not, in fact, licensed in the state of Michigan to perform any medical services.? The unlicensed ?doctors? met and purported to examine non-homebound Medicare beneficiaries for home health care services.? Jawad Ahmad drove one unlicensed ?doctor? to meet and purportedly examine beneficiaries who were not, in fact, homebound.

Between 2008 and 2009, Ahmad's co-conspirators acquired beneficial ownership and control over three additional home health care companies: First Care Home Health Care LLC, Quantum Home Care Inc., and Moonlite Home Care Inc.? Each of these home health companies billed Medicare and operated in a manner the same as or similar to Physicians Choice.? Each of these companies received fraudulent home health referrals from Dr. Smith through Phoenix Visiting Physicians.? From in or around May 2010 through in or around September 2011, Medicare paid more than $5 million for fraudulent home health care claims submitted by Physicians Choice, First Care, Quantum and Moonlite based on Dr. Smith?s fraudulent referrals.? The four home health companies at the center of the indictment received approximately $13.8 million from Medicare in the course of the conspiracy.

Eight other defendants have pleaded guilty in this case, including Tausif Rahman and Muhammad Ahmad, who each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of money laundering, as well as Dr. Dwight Smith who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Catherine K. Dick of the Criminal Division?s Fraud Section.? The case was investigated by the FBI and HHS-OIG and was brought as part of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, supervised by the Criminal Division?s Fraud Section and the U.S. Attorney?s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Since its inception in March 2007, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, now operating in nine cities across the country, has charged more than 1,330 defendants who have collectively billed the Medicare program for more than $4 billion.? In addition, HHS?s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, working in conjunction with HHS-OIG, is taking steps to increase accountability and decrease the presence of fraudulent providers.

Light from self-luminous tablet computers can affect evening melatonin, delaying sleep

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that a two-hour exposure to electronic devices with self-luminous "backlit" displays causes melatonin suppression, which might lead to delayed bedtimes, especially in teens.

The research team, led by Mariana Figueiro, associate professor at Rensselaer and director of the LRC's Light and Health Program, tested the effects of self-luminous tablets on melatonin suppression. In order to simulate typical usage of these devices, 13 individuals used self-luminous tablets to read, play games, and watch movies.

"Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent. Stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime," said Figueiro.

The actual melatonin suppression values after 60 minutes were very similar to those estimated using a predictive model of human circadian phototransduction for one-hour light exposures. "Based on these results, display manufacturers can use our model to determine how their products could affect circadian system regulation," said Figueiro.

The results of this study, together with the LRC predictive model of human circadian phototransduction, could urge manufacturers to design more "circadian-friendly" electronic devices that could either increase or decrease circadian stimulation depending on the time of day -- reducing circadian stimulation in the evening for a better night's sleep, and increasing in the morning to encourage alertness. In the future, manufacturers might be able to use data and predictive models to design tablets for tailored daytime light exposures that minimize symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, and sleep disorders in seniors. Individuals would be able to receive light treatments while playing games or watching movies, making light therapy much more enjoyable than just sitting in front of a light box.

Along with Figueiro, co-authors of the study are LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea, LRC Research Specialist Brittany Wood, and LRC Research Nurse Barbara Plitnick.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland at night and under conditions of darkness in both diurnal and nocturnal species. It is a "timing messenger," signaling nighttime information throughout the body. Exposure to light at night, especially short-wavelength light, can slow or even cease nocturnal melatonin production. Suppression of melatonin by light at night resulting in circadian disruption has been implicated in sleep disturbances, increased risk for diabetes and obesity, as well as increased risk for more serious diseases, such as breast cancer, if circadian disruption occurs for many consecutive years, such as in nightshift workers.

"Technology developments have led to bigger and brighter televisions, computer screens, and cell phones," said Wood, who used the study as the basis for her master's thesis. "To produce white light, these electronic devices must emit light at short wavelengths, which makes them potential sources for suppressing or delaying the onset of melatonin in the evening, reducing sleep duration and disrupting sleep. This is particularly worrisome in populations such as young adults and adolescents, who already tend to be night owls."

In the study, the participants were divided into three groups. The first group viewed their tablets through a pair of clear goggles fitted with 470-nm (blue) light from light emitting diodes (LEDs). This was a "true positive" condition because the blue light is known to be a strong stimulus for suppressing melatonin. The second group viewed their tablets through orange-tinted glasses, capable of filtering out the short-wavelength radiation that can suppress melatonin; this was the "dark control" condition. The third group did not wear glasses or goggles. Each tablet was set to full brightness.

In order to accurately record personal light exposures during the experiment, each subject wore a Dimesimeter close to the eye. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels."

The research team established that duration of exposure and the distance between the eye and the display, which determines the amount of light reaching the back of the eye, affects melatonin levels. Melatonin suppression after a one-hour exposure to the tablet was not significantly affected. However, after a two-hour exposure there was significant suppression.

The type of task being performed on the tablets also determines how much light is delivered to the cornea and, therefore, the impact on evening melatonin levels. As shown by the team's Dimesimeter measurements, the range of photopic illuminance levels at the cornea from the tablets alone varied from 5 lux, which is not likely to affect melatonin, to over 50 lux, which would result in measurable melatonin suppression after a two-hour exposure. Therefore, before any generalizations can be made, it is important to measure how much light one is receiving from these self-luminous devices.

Until manufacturers develop more "circadian-friendly" electronic devices that increase or decrease light exposure based on time of day, Figueiro has several recommendations to reduce their effects on sleep. "We recommended dimming these devices at night as much as possible in order to minimize melatonin suppression, and limiting the amount of time spent using these devices prior to bedtime."

The study was funded by Sharp Laboratories of America.

Chris Matthews accuses Romney of playing ?race card? (VIDEO)

Chris Matthews lashed out at Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Monday in Tampa during a live "Morning Joe" segment, with the feisty MSNBC host accusing Mitt Romney and the GOP of playing the race card in their campaign against President Barack Obama.

"It is an embarrassment to your party to play that card," Matthews said. "This stuff about getting rid of the work requirement for welfare is dishonest, everyone's pointed out it's dishonest, and you are playing that little ethnic card there. You can play games and giggle about it, but the fact is your side is playing that card. You start talking about work requirements, everyone knows what game you're playing. It's a race card."

Matthews railed Priebus over Romney's recent joke about the birther movement.

"This thing about if your name is Romney," Matthews said. "Yeah you went to prep school and you brag about it. This guy's got an African name, he has to live with it. Look who's going further in their life. Who was born on third base? This absurdity, making fun of the birth certificate issue."

"Of course he's playing the race card," he continued. "Why would he bring [the birth certificate] up?"

"Because he's an awkward joker," co-host Mika Brzezinski responded.

"He misfired badly on the joke," Joe Scarborough said.

Tom Brokaw, seated next to Matthews, called it a demonstration of Romney's "awkward sense of humor."

"I do think in fairness that during the debates there was a lot of stuff aimed at the president that was not refuted by leaders of the party," Brokaw said.

Priebus, who stayed mostly silent during Matthews' rant, eventually responded.

"I'm not going to get into a shouting match with Chris," Priebus said, calling his accusations "garbage."

"We've gotten to a point in politics where any moment of levity is frowned upon by guys like you just so you can push your brand," the RNC chairman said. "You know what, good for you."

Last week on "The Tonight Show," Matthews was far less critical of the GOP campaign, but alluded to Romney's awkwardness.

"He's a little remote, you know?" Matthews said. "He says things like, 'Oh, I just left the aircraft.' What are you, a Conehead? What planet are you from? Nobody talks like that. We earthlings have a certain language. [We say] 'I just got off the plane.'"

FAA to study use of electronics on planes

It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that it is starting a process to study the issue, with a timeline that means it will take at least until March 2013 for a recommendation ? and maybe longer for action.

In March the FAA raised hopes that it might loosen rules for electronic devices by saying it would "explore ways to bring together all of the key stakeholders involved."

Smartphones and tablet computers are common in the passenger cabin, and pilots are using iPads in the cockpit. But passengers have to shut off electronic devices when the plane is below 10,000 feet because of worries that signals emitted by the devices might interfere with electronics in the cockpit.

The FAA doesn't actually ban the devices. But it says airlines can only allow devices that have been tested and proven not to interfere with the plane's electronics. With thousands of devices on the market and new ones coming out each day, airlines simply ban them all during takeoff and landing.

The FAA will form a committee this fall to study the issue for six months and then make recommendations. The FAA often uses such Aviation Rulemaking Committees when it is considering changes, and their deliberations often last months, sometimes years.

This group will include people from mobile technology companies, airplane makers, pilots and flight attendants, airlines, and passenger associations. The FAA will also ask for public input.

In a written statement, acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said the agency wants "information to help airlines "decide if they can allow more widespread use of electronic devices in today's aircraft."

The FAA said allowing cellphone use during flights isn't under consideration.

FAA spokeswoman Brie Sachse said the members of the new committee have not yet been chosen. She declined to say why the process is taking so long.

Trash Talk: Penn State opens new chapter

Trash Talk: For Penn State, this is the first game of the Bill O'Brien era. He not only has to get a big-time football team to play its first game at home, but he knows the world will be watching to see how the Nittany Lions respond in the post-Paterno era.

Home Improvement Can Be Difficult Without The Right Info | Home ...

It can be frustrating trying to figure out where to start improving your home, but it will be worth it down the road. It takes patience and a wealth of knowledge to get started on the right foot. This article will present you with tips on how to succeed in your remodeling projects.

Quality Paint

Don?t skimp on the type of paint you buy for the outside of your house. Paint jobs last a lot longer when quality paint is used. Even though it costs more to get high quality paint, it goes on quicker and last longer than lower quality paint. You may as well make the investment in good paint now, rather than paying to have the house repainted often due to your previous use of poor-quality paint.

If you find that water is leaking underneath your sink or from your tap refrain from attempting to fix it on your own. Simply place a large container under the leak and contact a plumber.

One fantastic way to improve the function and value of your house is to install a filter system for your tap water. That is a simple project which can be completed in just a few hours. You can put a water filter under your sink.

Are you thinking of selling your home? Updating your home with improvement projects is an easy way to increase your home?s value. Replace older appliances and offer them as part of your asking price. This will appeal to many buyers.

If you?re not happy about the home improvements made by your contractor, remember that you have the right to complain. Let him know what he?s done wrong. If a talk does not seem to bring about a resolution then it may be time to put your concerns in a letter and send it to him through a registered letter. After that, you should call the consumer protection office in your area and see if they can help.

Whenever you need to get a home improvement project done, you should never hire a contractor who is unlicensed. No matter where it is that you currently reside, all contractors are required to have some sort of certification from your state. Although the requirements are not a guarantee that your contractor is competent for the job, they are required by law. It?s important to realize that if a contractor doesn?t have proper licensing, he probably does not have proper insurance. This is a big risk for you.

Draft Excluders

Purchase draft excluders or sealant strips to stop air from getting out. You put draft excluders under your door, and they help stop cold air from coming in and hot air from going out. There is sealant stripping that can fit around a door frame, which will accomplish the same thing. Look for them in hardware stores.

Do not ignore leaky faucets. Minor leaks can become major leaks in very little time, and not only does a leak waste water, it also increases your water bill. The water can leave lasting damage, too. Repairing a faucet, or even replacing it, is simple and inexpensive. Fixing items hurt by a bad faucet is not as cheap or easy.

Change your cabinet doors. Now, not all of us can get new cabinets. Changing the doors can give your cabinet a whole new look though. Measure before you start replacing so you?ll be able to acquire the correct parts. Installation is easy. You only need to replace the hinge.

It is important that you focus your improvement work on the visible portions of your home. Your buyers are going to judge your home by what is visible and things like an overgrown garden or paint that is peeling can lose a sale in no time. Although major improvements aren?t usually seen, lesser, more obvious ones are, so take care of them before selling your home.

As you can see, there is a lot to learn but the results make it all worthwhile. If you have the right amount of motivation and knowledge, you can achieve great things while making your house into your home
