Ay bro, the reason you can't reply to Scarny's PM is because you need to write at least 10 forum posts [OOC or otherwise] before you can send private messages.

Anywhere, like the two you've written here for example. I assume they do it so that way the PM box isn't used for spam.

Grief Diary, 10/12/12 | Greta Christina's Blog

10/12/12

The thing I?ve been having a hard time with in the last couple of days: The fact that grief feels horrible ? and there?s pretty much nothing I can do about it.

I?m very used to tackling my problems. I?m used to trying to fix the bad things in my life, or at least taking action to alleviate them. And I can?t do that now. There is a basic, unfixable problem in my life, which is that my dad is dead. There is another basic, unfixable problem in my life, which is that grief happens, and takes time. And the only thing I can really do is to slog through it. There are a handful of things I can do that sometimes make me feel better, or at least that don?t make me feel worse: exercise, time outdoors, socializing, chocolate, making plans and having things to look forward to. But basically, all I can do is ride it out, sit and wait for time to pass. There?s a line from the movie ?Tootsie? that Ingrid keeps reminding me of: ?I?m going to feel this way until I don?t feel this way anymore.?

And I. Fucking. Hate. That. I?m a control queen. I hate just sitting around waiting for days and weeks and months to pass, so I can feel better. This helplessness itself is just one more fucking thing that feels bad, just one more shitty layer of meta piled on to the core of the grief itself.

I?m also realizing that I?m feeling cut off ? voluntarily, but still cut off ? from one of my usual avenues of connection and expression and participation in the world? namely, the ongoing conflicts and debates in atheism. I?ve always been someone who?s relatively unafraid of conflict, who?s willing to speak her mind even if it gets blowback. I pride myself on that, and to a great extent I?ve carved it out as a major part of my career niche. But right now, I just don?t have it in me.

And that?s very frustrating. There?s a whole host of pieces I?ve been writing in my head, pieces where I think I have a valuable and unique perspective that could make a real difference in some of these conflicts? and I?m not writing them. I don?t have it in me right now to moderate a flamey, 200+ comment thread about feminism, or sex work, or Atheism+. Even the fairly small or private conflicts I?ve been participating in have been upsetting me and depressing me and freaking me out, all out of proportion. I wake up to a couple of mildly angry emails, and it fucks me up for hours. I know that holding off on these fights for now is the right choice, the best thing I can do to take care of myself. But that sense of being cut off? it?s yet another shitty layer of meta. On top of the 23,452 ways that I feel uncomfortable and restless and like nothing feels right, I have the profoundly uncomfortable sensation of keeping my mouth shut when I normally would be speaking. Keeping my mouth shut does not come naturally to me. Not saying things, solely because I?m afraid that people will be mean to me and I can?t handle it, does not come naturally to me. I fucking hate it.

(A few hours later)

On the other hand ? damn. Going to the gym. I really have to remember going to the gym. Made it to the gym tonight ? absolutely did not want to go, was not in the mood to go, seriously considered being a bad angel and trying to talk Ingrid out of going and into hanging out with me at the cafe instead, had to pull together all my fortitude and inner resources to force myself to go ? and was so very glad I did. Went to the gym, and afterwards we picked up take-out burgers and took them home and ate them in front of ?Project Runway? and read Tom and Lorenzo and watched South Korean pop videos on YouTube and let cats crawl all over us? and it felt great. It didn?t feel ecstatic or mind-blowing or anything. It just felt like a Friday night. It felt like myself, enjoying my life and my home and my marriage. Yet another note to self: Go to the fucking gym, as often as you possibly can. Do not keep telling yourself, ?I don?t have time.? Your productivity is for shit right now. You are spending hours every day staring blankly at a computer screen and re-checking Twitter for the fiftieth time. Your productivity will be vastly improved if you wake the fuck up. Going to the gym wakes you the fuck up. And besides, you just like it. So go.

from your own site.

Top Egypt prosecutor defies sacking by president

(AP) ? Egypt's prosecutor general defied a presidential decision to remove him from his post, entering his office Saturday in a downtown Cairo courthouse flanked by security and hundreds of judicial officials.

President Mohammed Morsi had ordered Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud to step down in an apparent bid to appease public anger over the acquittals of ex-regime officials accused of orchestrating violence against protesters last year.

Morsi appears to have broad public support for removing Mahmoud, who was appointed under ousted president Hosni Mubarak. But the prosecutor and a powerful judges' club said this infringes on the judiciary's independence, as Egyptian law protects the judicial officials such as the prosecutor general from be fired by the president.

To overcome the constraints on removing him, Morsi's decision asked Mahmoud to become ambassador to the Vatican. But Mahmoud refused to be reappointed.

The move confronts Morsi with a dilemma: if he moves too aggressively against Mahmoud, it feeds into criticisms that he is exceeding the powers of his office. If he moves too slowly, it feeds into the accusation that he is failing to address the goals of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mubarak. Many say a whole overhaul of the judiciary, not just removal of the prosecutor general, is needed to effect change in justice.

The standoff with the prosecutor general continued as Morsi faced a new challenge in the form of violent protests between his supporters and critics.

The judicial standoff formed the backdrop to rival rallies Friday in Tahrir square that escalated into street fighting between his supporters and his critics, the first such confrontation since Morsi came to office in late June.

Pro-Morsi protesters held a rally in Tahrir square to urge the removal of Mahmoud. But they clashed with anti-Morsi demonstrations planned before to denounce the lack of progress on economic issues and a hotly contested constitution still in a drafting process. Morsi's supporters say the constitutional drafting panel was set up by an elected parliament and broadly represents Egypt's political factions. Critics say the process is dominated by a majority made up of Islamists, such as the Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsi hails and more radical groups, when it should be determined by consensus.

Mahmoud said he will not leave his post despite official pressure for him to step down. Before heading to the president's office to discuss ways to defuse the standoff, Mahmoud said to a meeting of judges and attorneys that he was subjected to pressure and threats from Morsi's advisors.

"I refuse to work anywhere else except as prosecutor general, even if I was offered a ministerial position," Mahmoud said in comments carried by the MENA press agency.

In comments to the local media, Justice Minister Ahmed Mekki said the decision to remove Mahmoud was under negotiation and had been announced "hastily." He denied he threatened the prosecutor general.

Morsi's goal in removing Mahmoud appeared to be to appease anger over the Wednesday acquittal of Mubarak loyalists over their alleged role in a turning point of the 2011 uprising, known as the "Battle of the Camel" after the camels ridden by some pro-Mubarak attackers who charged into an opposition crowd.

Many Egyptian activists accuse Mahmoud of having failed, either intentionally or due to incompetence, to present a strong case against the accused.

But they question the timing of Morsi's move, arguing that it distracts from the conflict over the constitution. Also, with parliament dissolved, Morsi has legislative authority, and liberals and secularists fear that his new foray into the affairs of the judiciary indicate that he is amassing too much power.

Morsi's advisors say the president's decisions are a response to public pressure.

For one thing, after two months where Android seemed to be gaining on iOS in mobile ad impressions, iOS saw an increase of 5 percentage points. Actually, the iPhone 5 also played a big role in Velti's last report ? even though the device wasn't available yet, the company was making predictions based on previous Apple launches. And indeed, the company says iOS saw a similar increase after the launch of the iPhone 4S. Apple's mobile operating system now claims 72 percent of total impressions, while Android has 38 percent.

A-Rod benched by Yankees for Game 5 vs Orioles

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez started the New York Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.

After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Baltimore Orioles, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the starting lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

"I'm not happy and obviously disappointed," Rodriguez said. "Want to be in there in the worst way."

Eric Chavez started at third base, while Game 3 star Raul Ibanez was the designated hitter in the winner-take-all series finale. It was the first time A-Rod didn't start a postseason game for his team since 1995.

"It is difficult. He has meant a lot to the organization, the game of baseball over the years," manager Joe Girardi said. "And he has been a very productive hitter. But he struggled against right-handers in the series, and Chavy has been good against right-handers all year long."

The 37-year-old Rodriguez is 2 for 16 (.125) with no RBIs in the series, going hitless in 12 at-bats against right-handed pitchers with nine strikeouts. He was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the opener against Jason Hammel, Baltimore's Game 5 starter.

Chavez hit .298 against righties during the regular season but is 0 for 4 against them in the playoffs.

Girardi contacted Rodriguez at about 1 p.m., before the 14-time All-Star arrived at Yankee Stadium, and informed him of the decision. Rodriguez took batting practice with the regular starters, not the reserves.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can."

Since helping New York win the 2009 World Series, Rodriguez is 10 for 66 (.152) with no homers and six RBIs in postseason play. He hasn't homered in 84 at-bats since Sept. 14.

With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning of Game 3, Girardi sent up Ibanez to bat for A-Rod, and Ibanez hit a tying home run. Ibanez homered again in the 12th to give New York a 3-2 win.

Baltimore led 2-1 in the 13th inning in Game 4 when Chavez batted for Rodriguez and lined to third for the final out.

Is getting benched worse than getting pinch hit for?

"I'm not going to get into that," Rodriguez said. "I'm part of this team, and I'm ready to roll, and I'll be ready."

With the Yankees owing Rodriguez $114 million over the next five seasons, managing his decline could become a central issue for the team.

"I ain't worried about years ahead. Just let me worry about today," Girardi said. "The best relationships, the strongest relationships, are always relationships that go through some struggles. Relationships just aren't perfect. I mean, you put a husband and wife together where the relationship was just perfect without any struggles, and you're probably not living on this planet. So relationships go through that.

"So, I mean if things have to be, you know, built back up, we can do that. I have had to do that before. So I don't worry about that."

Fifth on the career list with 647 home runs ? 115 behind Barry Bonds' record ? Rodriguez has been slowed by five trips to the disabled list in five seasons: for a strained quadriceps (2008), hip surgery (2009), a strained calf (2010), knee surgery (2011) and a broken hand, sustained July 24 when hit by a pitch from Seattle's Felix Hernandez.

Before the start of spring training in 2009, he admitting using performance-enhancing drugs while he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03.

As for the rest of the Yankees' lineup, Derek Jeter was back at shortstop after being moved to DH for a game because of a sore left foot. Jeter led off, followed by left fielder Ichiro Suzuki, second baseman Robinson Cano, first baseman Mark Teixeira, Ibanez, right fielder Nick Swisher, center fielder Curtis Granderson, catcher Russell Martin and Chavez.

Yankees ace CC Sabathia was on the mound. He led the Yankees to a 7-2 win in the opener.

Girardi decided against benching Granderson, who is 1 for 16 (.063) with nine strikeouts in the series. He did not want to start Brett Gardner, who has been limited to three at-bats since mid-April because of an elbow injury that required surgery.

"If Grandy stays in his zone, he will be fine," Girardi said. "That's the big thing he has to concentrate on."

Social network about horses and riding related users - Flippa

This is horser.net, a online social network for horse riders and everyone related to horses and riding. The website contains the full source code (developed in symfony) and a lot of domains, even trademarked Logo with a different name.

The script can be easily modified to run another social community like pet lovers (cats, dogs,...) or anything else, just name it.

The website has been developed from scratch within a timerange of about 2 years and can be extended with new modules / ideas if you can develop in symfony.

The website contains the following modules, already developed:

Community:

A complete community module with usual register / login process, own profile for each user, messaging a board, guestbook, Buddy-list, tagging, picture- and video galleries, groups and own blog for each user. Each user has it's own event calendar and can suggest events to the moderators, who then can put the event into a global calendar. A newsstream like at facebook shows, what's happeing with the latest activities. A member overview is also included.

Magazine:

Different editors can create articles and stories. They can be created within different categories. Each article creates automatically a shortened tweet and there can be also a video connected to an article.

CMS:

The page contais a special and very easy to use CMS module (we call it easyCMS). The editor can click his page together from different boxes like a title, text, text with a picture (left, middle, right), pictures, a form builder and a link box. Very easy to use, just drag n drop your article together.

The CMS contains also a great asset manager for uploading and managing all the media.

Video / Article dictionary:

We created a dictionary, kinda mini wiki for the page. You can insert videoclips or just text with pictures or a combination of everyting. Chose from different categories to tag them.

Horse marketplace:

We build a complete horse marketplace, where users could sell their horses very easily. You can create a picture gallery, show important infos about the horse, you can show a complete pedigree of the horse and also the necessary contact detaisl with a google map. Also the marketplace shows random advertisements from the marketplace offers on the sidebar if the seller has more horses to sell, also it shows a nice advertisement with logo from the seller there.

Global Marketplace:

Besides the marketplace for horses, we created also a global marketplace for all user, so they can sell there new and used goods to anyone. Products also contain picture gallery with slider, description, contact details, categories and so on.

B2B Yellow pages / trade directory:

The system includes a nice B2B directory which allows a user to register as a normal user or as a business user. B2B user can be charged for this service, so they can present their company within the portal. Every company get's it's own page with picture slideshow, logo, contact details, description, google map, description and so on. Companies will be divided into different categories, so it even more easier to find it. The is also a overview page for each category, showing a pic and the name. Also there is a nice detailed search incl. radius search as every adress, which is given at the registration process, beeing automatically geo-coded for google map.

Advertisement:

There are two banner spots, which are hardcoded atm with two graphics. Can easily exchanged by a advertisment code snippet. Also the system itself shows latest offers from marketplace and horse marketplace sitewide.

Start page:

The startpage contains a nice slider pointing to articles, videos or anything else (created by a easy xml file). You can login or register, you see the latest news and also main topic articles.

Other:

We put a lot of effort, brain and developing into this. The design is seperated from the code, so it's not so hard to create a new layout for the system. it is prepared for multilanguage, we didn't finish that completely, but not so much left for that.

Via the backend you can create and manage users and upload videos, create categories and stuff. Content will be mostly created as inline editing directly on the frontpage, so very easy to use.

Domains / names / logos:

The website originally started with the german name PferdeABC.com and later changed to horser.net.

Foreclosure slowdown pushes up home prices

Joe Klamar / AFP - Getty Images

The Goldrush estates are seen in Las Vegas, which has long had the dubious distinction of being America's foreclosure capital. As foreclosures decline, home prices are slowly rising in many markets.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

Home buyers looking for bargains on foreclosed houses are having a harder time finding them.

When the housing market crashed in 2007, a wave of foreclosures accelerated the plunge in prices, which lopped roughly a third off the median price of a home.

Now with the pace of new foreclosures slowing, mortgage rates falling and home sales perking up, those once-in-a-lifetime bargains are fading from the market.

?Deeply discounted existing homes have been subject to strong demand from cash buyers and investors looking to lock into housing?s attractive income returns,? said Paul Diggle, a housing economist at Capital Economics, in a recent research note. ?The supply of such homes, meanwhile, has been dwindling. That has bid up existing house prices, particularly at the lower end of the price spectrum."

Nationwide, the median price of a new home was up by 17 percent in August compared to a year ago. For existing homes, the median price was 9.5 percent higher.?

During the depths of the housing bust, markets under the greatest price pressure had the highest concentrations of ?distressed? sales. Those include bank-owned homes seized in foreclosures and ?short sales,? in which lenders allow underwater homeowners to sell their home for less than the outstanding mortgage balance.

These distressed properties sold at deep discounts to the ?normal? market. But as the backlog of foreclosures has eased, those discounts are drying up.?

The foreclosure slowdown continued last month, according to the latest data from research firm RealtyTrac, which showed new filings hit a five-year low.

Foreclosure starts fell in 31 states, with the biggest drops in California, Arizona, Michigan, Georgia and Texas. Those are among the so-called non-judicial states, in which court approval isn't required for foreclosures. In some states where court approval is required, concerns about sloppy paperwork processing by lenders has prompted tougher reviews of home seizures.

Fewer new foreclosures means fewer unsold homes on the market, a glut that helped drive prices lower during the worst of the hosing bust. As the pace of sales has picked up and the volume of unsold inventory has fallen, so has the backlog of houses for sale. The supply of listings has fallen from an average 9.4-month supply in 2010 to 6.1 months in August, the latest data available from the National Association of Realtors.

?There is a shortage of inventory -- as crazy as it sounds to say that,? said Daren Blomquist, a RealtyTrac spokesman. ?In a lot of market there's less inventory of foreclosed properties than there is demand. You?re hearing about multiple bids for these properties.?

At the same time, demand for foreclosed homes has risen during the housing bust, in part because the stigma once associated with bank-owned properties has faded?somewhat.

?Many real estate agent who would have never wanted to deal with a foreclosure in the past decided to get on the bandwagon,? said Blomquist. ?Some now specialize in those properties.?

To be sure, foreclosed properties in some markets still being sold at deep discounts. Though the volume of foreclosures has slowed nationwide, the pace is still strong in Florida, where one in every 117 households in some stage of foreclosure last month, according to RealtyTrac.? Arizona, California, Illinois and Georgia also were among the top five states with the highest foreclosure rates in September.

With demand up and supply falling, prices have perked up. After falling by roughly a third after the 2006 peak, home prices have begun inching higher this year. After several false starts, the housing market began finding a footing earlier this year, and most analysts are convinced the worst is over in most parts of the country.

The latest evidence came this week with the Federal Reserve?s ?Beige Book? report on regional economic conditions, which showed the housing recovery picking up steam in some districts.

After the bubble burst, bargain-priced homes were available on both new and existing houses. One measure of the ?foreclosure discount? is the difference between the median price of existing and newly-built homes.

Since 1966, existing homes have sold, on average, for about 13 percent less than new homes, according to Diggle?s?research. During the housing bust, the discount widened to as much as one-third less than the price of a new home. The discount has been falling this year.

Prices are still heavily discounted on properties in bad repair, including that that have been unoccupied and poorly maintained. ?

Foreclosure discounts fade

As the pace of foreclosures has slowed, the discount on existing homes has narrowed compared to newly built houses. (Price in dollars)

Body's own recycling system: Researchers discover 'molecular emergency brake' in charge of regulating self-digestion

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Times of distress literally eat away at the core of starving cells: They start to digest their own parts and recycle them for metabolic purposes. This process -- called autophagy -- also plays a role in immune defense. In that context, however, the digestive machinery is switched on for an entirely different purpose: the elimination of pathogens that have invaded the body. Now, Prof. Ingo Schmitz at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, Germany, together with a team of researchers, has discovered that a "molecular brake" is in charge of regulating autophagy to keep it from getting out of control.

They published their findings in the scientific journal Cell Death & Differentiation.

Almost everything that happens inside a cell, including autophagy, is tightly regulated on a biochemical level. Like that, the cell makes sure that processes only take place when they are needed and that they are shut off when the need has expired. "Inside the cell, there exists a network of molecules. Between them, information is constantly being exchanged," says Schmitz, head of the research group "Systems-oriented Immunology and Inflammation Research" at HZI, who also holds a chair at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. "In a way, it looks like a big city subway map." However, only the starting point and the destination of a given "cellular subway line" are relatively easy to study. To explore the different stops along the way, is more difficult. But because other lines intersect and interact with each other at these points, it is very exciting for researchers to decode all molecules involved in these signal transduction processes. It also helps them better understand diseases caused by defects in these information highways.

What exactly happens on a molecular level during the later stages of autophagy was largely unknown -- until now. Schmitz and his team, along with researchers from the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Heinrich Heine University D?sseldorf, the T?bingen University, and the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, USA, have decoded one part of the molecular subway map.

Under the microscope, researchers can observe how larger-sized cellular components destined for degradation and recycling are enclosed within a small bubble, the so-called autophagosome. This structure then fuses with yet another little bubble, which digests the autophagosome's contents. "Autophagy is a survival mechanism to ensure that the cell is able to obtain the necessary nutrients during times of starvation," explains Schmitz.

For their studies, the scientists stained certain molecules and autophagosomes inside cells. This allowed them to observe microscopically which molecules are in charge of regulating the formation of the little digestive bubbles. To prompt self-digestion, they either starved the cells or simulated an infection. In the process, they discovered that the cells simultaneously also turned on autophagy-inhibiting molecules -- "like some kind of emergency brake that ensures autophagy doesn't get out of control." Such negative feedback loops are not unusual for cells, they frequently help prevent overshooting reactions.

The researchers managed to identify the components of this feedback loop and found a protein called p38 to play a key role in the process. The scientists were especially surprised to observe p38 proteins on the surface of the autophagosomes. Normally, this protein is localized inside the nucleus where it gets switched on whenever the cell is under stress. On the surfaces of autophagosomes, p38 performs a very different job: It alters another molecule, called Atg5, to get it to block the final step of autophagy, involving formation of the little digestive bubble. Autophagy is inhibited, and, essentially, the cell pulls the "molecular emergency brake."

If it didn't, diseases could potentially result. As such, defective molecules of the Atg family have been implicated in the etiology of the inflammatory bowel disease, Morbus Crohn. "Looking at Atg5-deficient mice, which die of nutrient-deficiency shortly after they are born, we see just how important it is to tightly regulate autophagy," emphasizes Ralf H?cker, one of the study's first authors. As so often, it is important to find the right balance, in this case, between too much and too little self-digestion.

Lexicon bowel drug meets main goal of mid-stage trial, shares rise

(Reuters) - Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc said its experimental bowel disorder drug met the main goal of reducing bowel movements in patients with gastrointestinal cancer in a mid-stage study, sending its shares up as much as 13 percent on Friday.

The drug telotristat etiprate is being studied to treat carcinoid syndrome, a secondary condition that develops in patients with tumors in the gastrointestinal tract.

Of the 15 patients enrolled in the study, 75 percent reported improvement in carcinoid symptoms at week 12 of the trial. The study also met the secondary goals of reducing abdominal pain and improving stool consistency.

The drug was tested on patients who were unable to tolerate somatostatin analog therapy -- the current treatment for carcinoid syndrome.

However, Morningstar analyst Karen Andersen said the drug could now be potentially used as a first-line therapy.

"Based on the data today I thought it looked like an extremely safe option ... and the efficacy was actually quite impressive. It's looking like a really promising orphan drug," Morningstar's Andersen said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had granted the drug an orphan drug designation in March.

Wedbush Securities Inc analyst Liana Moussatos said the company could file with the FDA for marketing approval in the middle of 2014.

Telotristat etiprate is also being studied in a mid-stage trial to treat ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease.

Lexicon is expected to start late-stage trials of its diabetes drug -- its most advanced drug candidate -- in the first half of 2013.

The company is also testing drugs for irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and glaucoma.

The Texas-based biopharmaceutical company's shares were up 8 percent at $2.59 on Friday on the Nasdaq.

First Person: There is Political Tension in Iowa

COMMENTARY | With the 2012 presidential election right around the corner, there is angst in the tall corn state.

As a 50-year-old living in a college town, it's entertaining to watch the party loyalists as they try to out-message each other and attract voters to their preferred candidate. Republicans have a tough time of it here, being outnumbered by Democrats about 3-1. But the angst in the air is real, as Romney has closed the gap on Obama and even taken the lead in some polls.

I'll be casting my vote for Mitt Romney in November and that's not popular here in Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa and a lot of liberal-minded students.

Like the party registration, Obama yard signs outnumber Romney signs by about a 3-1 margin throughout the community. Some yards have upwards of five or six signs on display for the various candidates on the general election ballot, but absolutely no party mixing! It's like that's not allowed, multi-sign displays are always straight ticket.

Bumper stickers are also prevalent; my favorite one is an anti-Obama sticker that reads, "Like a bad online date! He wasn't anything like his profile!"

As a conservative blogger in a liberal town, I attended a congressional candidate debate forum at the local library last Tuesday afternoon. It was a classic Republican challenger vs. a Democrat incumbent matchup. At times it got to be downright rude, feisty even, especially on the issue of ObamaCare. But it wasn't the candidates getting rude, it was the audience! Hoping to represent Iowa's Second Congressional District, Republican John Archer was booed by the Democrats in the audience when he was trying to make a rebuttal statement. His opponent, Democrat Dave Loebsack, was given ill-treatment by a few Republicans in the audience during the questions from the audience segment of the forum. If there were any undecided voters in attendance, I'm not sure they walked out of the event knowing who they'll vote for because of the many times audience members were commenting and talking over each other, drowning out the message each candidate was trying to convey.

That's OK, just tune in to TV; there are plenty of 30 second sound bites airing from now until Election Day to help you make up your mind?.. Yes, written in sarcasm?. If you haven't made up your mind on a candidate by now, shame on you. Get informed!

Steve Wynn Says Business Is 'Frightened' of Obama - Yahoo! Finance

Steve Wynn says the Obama administration's policies have directly resulted in American business leaders sitting on their bankrolls rather than investing in projects that would create jobs. Wynn, the founder and CEO of Wynn Resorts (WYNN), told Nevada television host Jon Ralston yesterday that he passed on a $2 billion project that could have created as many as 35,000 jobs because he's "afraid of the President," adding that every business guy Wynn knows is "frightened of Barack Obama and the way he thinks."

Breakout asked Hugh Johnson, chairman and CIO of Hugh Johnson Advisors and a job creator in his own right, if Wynn is onto something or just grinding an ax.

Wynn Is "Right on the Mark"

In the attached video Johnson says Wynn is dead right. The rub for Johnson is the proposed tax hike for those making over $250,000 a year. It's not a matter of fair share but of bad business. Many of those people are owners and operators of small businesses. Tax small business people at a higher rate and they'll have less money to hire.

As the owner of a small business himself, Johnson says he would see his taxes rise as a result of the proposed hikes. "I would be affected by an increase in taxes, and that's obviously going to do something to my appetite to hire some new people; it's going to reduce it."

Johnson rejects the notion that the wealthy are opposed to higher taxes because of outsized greed and a lack of compassion. Obama's "creeping policy" against small business in favor of those in need paradoxically limits the beneficiaries' chances of getting a job. Taking money out of the hands of employers is "not how you put the U.S. economy on the road to recovery," as Johnson sees it.

Rising Uncertainty on the Election

Even with the sense that the deck is increasingly stacked against him and his fellow business owners, Johnson doesn't think policy is the main culprit behind the economy recovering without as many jobs as would be expected. A far bigger concern is a lack of certainty on what the tax rates will ultimately be. It's impossible to know whether or not hiring makes economic sense when you don't know what your rates are going to be. Romney's comeback in the polls doesn't help ? at least for now.

"I want to see who's going to win this election, and I really want to see what the tax and spending policies are going to be for the next four years," says Johnson. "I don't know that right now, so I'm putting things on hold now and waiting for the outcome of this election."

Even if Romney wins the White House come February, there's no guarantee his policies will actually be put in place. But that's a problem for another day. For now guys like Steve Wynn and Hugh Johnson would be happy just to feel like they aren't the scapegoats for a recovery that continues to feel like a recession.
