When someone did speak out in opposition, it got a lot of attention.

"Ethanol is not worth it," Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) declared during his 2000 presidential campaign. "It does not help the consumer. Those ethanol subsidies should be phased out, and everybody here on this stage, if it wasn't for the fact that Iowa is the first caucus state, would share my view that we don't need ethanol subsidies."

In two runs for the White House, McCain mostly opted out of campaigning in Iowa, knowing his position made him an unpopular candidate among caucus-goers.

Yet this campaign season is sounding a new tone. In announcing his candidacy for president in Iowa this past week, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty also sent a message.

"The free market, not freebies from politicians, should decide a company's success," he said. "So, as part of a larger reform, we need to phase out subsidies across all sources of energy and all industries, including ethanol. We simply can't afford them anymore."

Like McCain, Pawlenty portrayed his blunt talk as truth-telling. Unlike McCain, Pawlenty thinks he can win in Iowa. He believes times have changed enough to allow him to oppose ethanol subsidies.

Des Moines Register political columnist Kathie Obradovich says he may be right.

"It's a different time. Tim Pawlenty is coming in at a time when the ethanol industry is mature ? and some people think it may be oversaturated," she says.

"Iowa has a very sophisticated electorate," he says. "They are not going to just go on the sound bite; they'll want details. And I think there will be a pretty robust discussion of this in this election cycle."

Which means the Iowa caucuses could see something new this time around, in the form of a real debate on an issue where in the past, only one position was seen as acceptable.

One in every 20 Windows PCs whose users turned to Microsoft for cleanup help were infected with malware, Microsoft said this week.

Microsoft cited that statistic and others from data generated by its new Safety Scanner, a free malware scanning and scrubbing tool that re-launched May 12.

The 420,000 copies of the tool that were downloaded in the first week of its availability cleaned malware or signs of exploitation from more than 20,000 Windows PCs, Microsoft's Malware Protection Center (MMPC) reported Wednesday. That represented an infection rate of 4.8 percent.

On average, each of the infected PCs hosted 3.5 threats, which Microsoft defined as either actual malware or clues that a successful attack had been launched against the machine.

Of the top 10 threats found by Safety Scanner, seven were Java exploits, said Scott Wu and Joe Faulhaber of the MMPC, in a blog post. Wu is a program manager with the MMPC, while Faulhaber is a software engineer.

That finding backs up a recent Microsoft security intelligence report that noted a huge spike in Java-based exploits in the second half of 2010, when the number tracked by Microsoft jumped to nearly 13 million from around 1 million in the first six months of that year.

Microsoft blamed exploits of just two vulnerabilities in Oracle's Java for generating 85 percent of all Java attacks in the second half of 2010. Not surprising, those same two vulnerabilities ranked No. 1 and No. 6 in the Safety Scanner top 10.

One of the heavily-exploited Java bugs was patched in December 2008 by Sun -- which has since been swallowed by Oracle -- while the other was fixed in November 2009.

Microsoft has sounded the warning about the explosion in Java exploits before. In October 2010, Holly Stewart, another MMPC manager, said the attack volume was "scary" and "unprecedented."

Hacker reliance on Java made sense to Marc Fossi, the director of Symantec's security response team, in an interview last year. "Since Java is both cross-browser and cross-platform, it can be appealing to attackers," he said, referring to Java's use by every major browser, and on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

Safety Scanner found 2,272 Windows PCs with evidence of an exploit of the most wide-used Java bug, dubbed "CVE-2008-5353" in the Common Vulnerabilities & Exploits database. Of those machines, 7.3 percent of them also contained the notorious Alureon rootkit, while 5.7 percent of them had been infected with one of the fake security programs of the "Winwebsec" family.

"By the time a user downloads and runs [Microsoft Safety Scanner] to detect malware, the machine may have already been infected, if it was vulnerable to the exploit at the time," acknowledged Wu and Faulhaber.

Alureon made news in February 2010 when Windows XP systems infected with the rootkit were crippled after a Microsoft security update. And Winwebsec, as Microsoft called the line of phony antivirus software that dupes victims into paying for the worthless program, has been linked to MacDefender, the scareware that's been plaguing Mac users all month.

Safety Scanner, which replaced an older online-only tool, uses the same technology and detection signatures as Microsoft's free consumer-grade Security Essentials antivirus program and its Forefront Endpoint Protection product for enterprises.

"Some people ... when you try to go to talk to them they try to shoo you away a little bit," he says. "But usually I try to walk pretty fast, so it's not that bad."

When our food comes, Ferruzza gives it a thumbs up. And the prices were'nt terrible either: Our tab was about $25, and that included the pizza and salad combination, two iced teas, and an appetizer plate. AMC's Patterson is aware of certain problems, and says the company's working on them. They're figuring out how to ensure that food comes out hot, in a timely manner, and what items are best suited to eating in the dark.

It's all about becoming what he calls more "guest-centric" ? giving people choices, like baseball did when it expanded from beer and brats to barbecue and sushi.

Meanwhile, AMC is continuing to develop the dine-in theater concept. It has just opened one in Orlando, and another will open in Phoenix by year end.

Changing With The Times

With movies now in high definition, 3-D and surround sound, Patterson says people are looking for an upgrade in their eating experience as well.

"Just soft drinks and popcorn...although those elements have paid the bills for the last 90 years for AMC, we have to look beyond that," he says. "What does the guest expect? And then what do we have to do to exceed that expectation?"

Patterson says the company is testing the dine-in concept as one of a dozen new initiatives aimed at boosting revenues.

While the numbers have been good so far, he says it's too soon to know whether customers will take to the idea of having more ambitious meals with their movies.
