7 Eco-friendly Tips to Green Your Bathroom | Inhabitat - Sustainable ...

TIP 1: Install a Low-flow Toilet

Toilets use approximately 27% of the water consumed in your home ? more than any other appliances or plumbing ? including the washing machine, dishwasher and shower. Replacing your old toilet with a low-flow model?is a great place to start when greening your bathroom. Newer homes will boast more efficient low-flow toilets installed by their contractor, but those found in older homes can use up to a whopping 7 gallons per flush. While low-flow toilets used to get a bad rap for boasting a less than desirable flush, sometimes requiring users to hit the handle twice, modern low-flow toilets provide ample flushing power while still using just a fraction of the water.

If you already have a low-flow toilet you can still cut down on water usage even more by installing a dual-flusher that gives you a choice: push one button for flushing liquid waste (around .8 gallons of water) and another for solid waste (1.6 gallons or less). Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers were both outstanding on Sunday at Lambeau Field, but in a back-and-forth game with plenty of twists and turns, it was Rodgers? Packers who ended up on top of Brees? Saints, 28-27.

Brees completed 35 of 54 passes for 446 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions, but that wasn?t enough. Although he maneuvered them into range for an apparent go-ahead field goal late in the fourth quarter, the Saints? successful kick was called back on a holding penalty, and when they were backed up the Saints missed.

Rodgers completed 31 of 41 passes for 319 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception, and a short completion on a third down just after the two-minute warning iced the game and gave the Packers the win.

For the second consecutive week, the Packers suffered at the hands of bad officiating. Last week it was the infamous Hail Mary in Seattle that wrongly gave the Seahawks a touchdown and likely led to the end of the NFL?s lockout of its referees. This week there are no replacements to blame, just longtime ref Jeff Triplette and his crew, who botched several calls, including a fumble by Saints kickoff returner Darren Sproles that they wrongly ruled down by contact, and a push-off in the end zone by Saints receiver Marques Colston on a touchdown catch that should have been called back for offensive pass interference.

But this time the bad officiating didn?t cost the Packers the game, and they improved to 2-2. The Saints fought hard, but in the end they lost once again, falling to 0-4.

The port call, however, was scrapped because of security concerns surrounding Mideast protests against a film made in the U.S. that denounces Islam's holiest figure.</p><p>Once again, Egyptian tourism, an engine of the national economy and a flagship of the regional industry, has taken a hit. It was another setback for a business that had plummeted in parts of the Middle East and North Africa last year during the uprisings known as the Arab Spring, then moved toward recovery this year.</p><p>"Small things become like mountains," Essam Zeid, an Egyptian tour guide, said of the fallout from unrest in Egypt since authoritarian <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348814288_2">President Hosni Mubarak</span> was ousted in February 2011. But he also offered a (somewhat) positive metaphor: "We always say that Egypt gets sick but never dies. Recovery is always an option."</p><p>Egypt and other Arab nations undergoing turmoil rely heavily on the labour-intensive trade and see it as a priority key to economic growth and social stability.</p><p>Travel and tourism directly contribute a big chunk of gross domestic product to some of the countries that suffered economic fallout from last year's tumult, which came not long after the global financial crisis. Egypt, for example, generals 6.7 per cent of GDP from tourism and Tunisia is around the same level with 6.6 per cent, according to the London-based World Tourism and Travel Council. It is among industry groups that will assess the impact from the latest upheaval, though it is too early for a comprehensive estimate of losses.</p><p>In the multi-layered Middle East, a setback for tourism in one area can mean a windfall in another. During the Arab Spring, tourists, many of them Arabs, turned away from countries in crisis and travelled to more stable places like Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, said Sana Toukan, Middle East research manager for Euromonitor International, a market research group. The UAE also drew more Chinese visitors, according to Toukan.</p><p>The latest downturn followed demonstrations in Egypt against an online film that was produced by a U.S. citizen originally from Egypt and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad. They were part of a wider explosion of anger in Muslim countries. The unrest hit near the U.S. Embassy, far from the pyramids of Giza on Cairo's outskirts, and even farther from gated Red Sea resorts, cocoons for the beach-bound vacationer.</p><p>Yet the online or TV images of flames, barricades and whooping demonstrators were a killjoy for anyone planning a getaway, even though the protests have now largely subsided. Tour guides in Egypt say tourist bookings are mostly holding, but they worry about a drop-off early next year as people tend to plan several months ahead.</p><p>Tharwat Agami, head of the chamber of tourist agencies in Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings tombs in southern Egypt, reported up to one-quarter of tourist cancellations through October. His own company guided 17 American tourists last week, half of the group's expected number.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348814288_1">Royal Caribbean</span> International took no chances. One of its vessels, Mariner of the Seas, can carry more than 3,000 passengers. It left Italy, on Sept. 15 ? with regional tension still boiling over the film ? and was to call at Alexandria on the northern Egypt Mediterranean coast three days later.</p><p>The company cancelled the layover "in an abundance of caution," said Cynthia Martinez, director of global corporate communications at Miami-based <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348814288_4">Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.</span></p><p>"<span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348814288_3">Royal Caribbean International</span> continues to closely monitor the situation in Egypt," Martinez wrote in an email Tuesday to The Associated Press. "At this time, Royal Caribbean has not changed the itinerary of any upcoming sailing that includes a port call to Egypt."</p><p>Cruise ships also stayed away during the turmoil that led to Mubarak's downfall. Usually, passengers board buses for a day's outing to Cairo, where the pyramids, the medieval citadel, the mummies of the Egyptian Museum and other treasures await. It's a windfall for guides, ticket vendors and souvenir shops.</p><p>Egyptian tourism revenues fell 30 per cent to $9 billion in 2011, but the industry proved as resilient as it is vulnerable. It survived the killing of 62 people, mostly foreign tourists, by Islamic militants in a 1997 attack at Luxor that seemed aimed at weakening the government by stopping the flow of tourism revenue. The Sept. 11, 2001 attacks by al-Qaida pummeled tourism, as did 2005 bombings in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh.</p><p>Fueled partly by oil income, Mideast tourism is more diverse and reliant on regional customers. Expatriates and tourists splurge in the glitzy city-state of Dubai in the Persian Gulf; religious tourism is big at Islamic sites in Saudi Arabia; Oman and Jordan are angling for a piece of the medical tourism market. The popular uprisings did not affect Turkey but diverted tourist traffic to the country, now rated sixth in the world in international tourist arrivals.</p><p>Tourism prospects are a moot point in Syria, which is embroiled in a civil war, and in still-chaotic Libya, where militias roam. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed on Sept. 11 in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in an attack on the American consulate there.</p><p>In Tunisia, violence and looting around the U.S. Embassy during a protest against the anti-Islam film did no favours for a tourism campaign that had been titled, "All Dreams are Possible."</p><p>"It's not one picture when you look at the Middle East," said Sandra Carvao, Madrid-based communications co-ordinator at the World Tourism Organization, a U.N. agency. "It's a region that has suffered and has proven to bounce back in the past."</p><p>Indeed, the agency had deemed the Middle East to be the fastest growing tourism market in the world over the past decade, despite the Iraq war, the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah and other violence. While some Gulf airlines have gone bankrupt, Carvao compared the expansion of Emirates and Etihad Airways to the rate of growth of Asia's aviation leaders.</p><p>Amid upheaval and political transition in 2011, according to the agency, international tourist arrivals in the Middle East dropped seven per cent to 55.7 million, and in North Africa by nine per cent to 17 million. So far this year, the numbers have climbed by nearly one per cent and 10.5 per cent, respectively.</p><p>Gladys Haddad, a tour guide in Cairo, said she was pleased that Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, appealed to Italians to visit Egypt when he was in Rome at the height of tension over the anti-Islam film. She said early concerns that Egypt's Islamist-dominated government might scare off tourists by banning alcohol or mixed beaches have waned, at least for now.</p><p>"I don't think they're going to have like a magic stick to do things right away" to improve tourism, Zeid, the guide who is quick with a metaphor, said of Egypt's fledgling government. "We can't really evaluate their work right now. They have lots of other issues on their agenda."</p><p>One thing in their favour, immeasurably, is what lies in Egyptian sands. In its bid to revive tourism, the government this month reopened the Serapeum of Saqqara, a subterranean necropolis where bulls were believed to have been buried in giant sarcophagi. Jamie is a tough chick, but her daughter Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) has special needs.</p> <p>The other kids make fun of her inability to read, leaving Malia in a fragile and increasingly alienated state. Jamie would like to do something for her kid suffering from dyslexia, but without any financial resources, she?s forced to watch her daughter?s future collapse in front of her eyeballs.</p> <p>The first act of Won?t Back Down shows us just how far Jamie is willing to go for Malia as she sacrifices every free second to lobby for entry to a better school. Yet, for all the fast-talking and pushing, Jamie makes no progress until she makes a visit to the state education department.</p> <p>Using her folksy receptionist skills, she learns there?s a little-known legal loophole that allows parents and teachers to take over the administrative functions of a failing school. All Jamie has to do is convince teachers and parents it?s the right thing to do, fill out the paperwork, have a hearing and win the school board vote.</p> <p>It sounds doable. But everyone tells her the struggle is pointless, because even if she does bring it to a vote, the board tends to keep the status quo for the sake of union peace.</p> <p>If you saw Davis Guggenheim?s Waiting for Superman, the award-winning documentary about the cycle of dysfunction in U.S. schools, you?ll be more than familiar with the underlying edge in this Daniel Barnz movie as the film sets up a confrontation between concerned parents and the essence of trade-unionism.</p> <p>It?s practically impossible terrain for a Hollywood movie to navigate because there are big important speeches to be made on either side. Jamie is fighting to give her kid a better future. The union can quote Norma Rae.</p> <p>To its credit, the script does give each side a decent and sympathetic character to embrace as it distils the journey down to the central theme of parental love. After all, Jamie isn?t the only one looking for a better tomorrow. Along the way, she meets Nona Alberts (Viola Davis), a jaded teacher with a special-needs child of her own.</p> <p>Nona is on staff at Malia?s school, and Jamie can see that Nona isn?t like the other teachers, but Nona is tired of trying. She?s watched the best and brightest dim with every passing day, and she?s got no fight left.</p> <p>All she wants is for her son, Cody, to get the best education possible.</p> <p>When Jamie and Nona discover they both want the same thing, they join forces and launch a campaign to take back their school.</p> <p>Like I said, this is a Hollywood movie, so once Jamie puts on her olive green T-shirt that reads ?Parentrooper? we kind of know how things are going to end, even before we end up at the big vote scene, or meet the curmudgeonly but sympathetic school board chair.</p> <p>The rest of the time is spent exploring the issues in one overly scripted scene after another.</p> <p>From a tear-jerking monologue from Holly Hunter, who plays one of the union leaders, to an intimate tete-a-tete between Jamie and her new beau Michael (Oscar Isaac) ? one of the good teachers at Malia?s school who is also loyal union member ? we get all the emotional baggage surrounding the issues.</p> <p>Teachers may have passion, but they also recognize the importance of standing together. Similarly, parents love their children, yet they aren?t professional educators. Each side has a valid intellectual and emotional argument, and the movie bends over backwards to accommodate every point of view.</p> <p>The only real problem is just how lacklustre the scenes are. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_0">Los Angeles</span> took a major step Friday toward building a downtown stadium to lure an NFL team back to the nation's second most populous city, despite questions about how a 72,000-seat venue in the city's urban core would impact notorious freeway traffic, nearby housing prices and air quality.</p><p>The 12-0 vote by <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_7">City Council</span> came after starkly contrasting predictions about what the $1.5 billion project would mean for an economically troubled city that has fretted over the loss of professional football since the Raiders and Rams fled Southern California in 1994.</p><p>Supporters said the deal with developer <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_3">Anschutz Entertainment Group</span> would create thousands of jobs, a center of civic pride and new tax dollars for cash-starved City Hall, while critics warned that nearby housing prices would soar and traffic would come to a virtual standstill on game days.</p><p>"I know the result will be the return of economic vitality," Councilman Paul Koretz predicted.</p><p>The vote was overshadowed by the recent announcement that <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_6">AEG</span> was seeking a new owner, though company officials have assured City Hall the stadium plan will remain the same, even if the company changes hands.</p><p>The biggest question about the stadium is the most obvious: There's no one to play in it. Any deal to buy the company, a subsidiary of Denver-based Anschutz Co., would mean a major shift in sports and entertainment in the region and around the world.</p><p>AEG's holdings include pro <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868460_0">soccer</span>'s <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_5">Los Angeles Galaxy</span>, part-ownership of the NBA's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_1">Los Angeles Lakers</span>, and major entertainment and real estate holdings in downtown <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868459_2">Los Angeles</span>. Outside the city, AEG owns Major League <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868460_1">Soccer</span>'s Houston Dynamo and all or part of several arenas around the U.S. and in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868460_4">Sweden</span>, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868460_3">China</span> and <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348868460_2">Australia</span>.</p><p>The project, which calls for the renovation of an adjacent convention center, is facing a lawsuit filed by anti-poverty and environmental activists that some predict could delay or derail plans for the stadium, known as Farmers Field. The activist group, Play Fair at Farmers Field Coalition, is challenging a state law intended to help swiftly resolve legal challenges to the stadium, and it also wants AEG to pay $60 million toward affordable housing in the long-struggling downtown neighborhood.</p><p>A rival group, Majestic Realty, has proposed building a stadium in the City of Industry, outside Los Angeles.</p><p>AEG is hoping to have an NFL team on the field by the 2017 season. That's means iOS 6 got features like turn-by-turn navigation, vector-based maps, and Flyover, but lost features like built-in transit directions and StreetView. It also means the quality of the location data changed drastically for many users. While this was <a href="http://www.imore.com/ios-6-setting-apple-maps-expectations">hardly unexpected</a>, reaction has varied from "beautiful and perfectly usable" to "dreadful and a deal-breaker."</p> <p>Recognizing that Apple's new location data, licensed from TomTom and others, seems to vary in quality considerably from place to place, with big, populous American cities tending to be much better than small, rural, international areas, iMore still wanted to put them to a test.</p> <p>So I got in the car and drove for nearly 6 hours and did just that. Here are the results.</p> <h2>iOS 6 Maps vs. iOS 5 Maps vs. maps.google.com: Interface & ease of use</h2> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="345" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_ui_hero.jpg" title="" width="620" /></p> <p>Maps under iOS 6 isn't too much different than the design and feel of what users already had under iOS 5. Upon launching the app you'll be presented with a map of your current location. Along the top you've got a directions button, a search bar, and a link to your contacts so you can get directions to any address for any contact.</p> <p>When it comes to viewing a map and customizing the views you'll see two buttons in the lower left hand corner. The first is to automatically find your current location. You can tap it twice to use the built in compass to see what direction you're facing. The next button labeled "3D" allows you to enable or disable a 3D rendering of the map on the screen.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 maps user interface" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_ui.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>In the lower right hand corner you can tap on the page curl in order to customize view options even further. You've got three main map types which are standard, hybrid, and satellite. Standard will give you a drawn out view of maps with streets and other markings clearly labeled. Hybrid gives you an actual live view of what you're looking at along with street labels and other information. Satellite will leave out labels and only give you a live view.</p> <p>At anytime during navigation you can choose the list icon in the bottom left to view all the directions along your route. Once you start a route it'll automatically activate voice navigation via Siri. You can close out of the app, lock your iPhone, play music, or go about whatever you were doing and Maps will still keep track of directions for you. You'll see your route on the Lock screen and any directions will be announced as they happen via Siri.</p> <p>iOS 5 Maps is extremely similar when it comes to interface. You <em>will</em> however notice some features in iOS 5 Maps that are blatantly missing in iOS 6 maps such as transit and walking directions.</p> <p><img alt="" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/ios_5_maps_ui.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>iOS 5 Maps has two main views and you can toggle between them along the bottom of the screen. They are search and directions. You can also choose the arrow icon in the lower left corner to locate yourself at any time. Under search you can type in the name of any place or city and see it on a map. You can also choose the blue Address Book button to access your contacts and choose a destination that way. If you know the address or place you need to get to, you can type in directions manually as well.</p> <p>Similar to iOS 6 maps, tapping on the page curl in the bottom right will allow you to view traffic and switch between map view. iOS 5 Maps supports the same kind of maps iOS 6 maps does but adds the list option for list directions. You have this feature under iOS 6 maps as well but it's just moved to the main map view instead of being tucked inside the settings section.</p> <p>If you're on iOS 6 and aren't happy with the updated Maps app, you still have the option of going to maps.google.com from your Safari browser, bookmarking it on your Home screen, and using that instead. While the interface is different, you'll get all the same map data that Google offered in the iOS 5 Maps app.</p> <p>Along the top you've got the option to search for a destination, locate yourself, and more. The web version of Google Maps will also give you the option to choose between driving directions, transit info, walking directions, and bicycle routes.</p> <p><img alt="" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/googlewebapp_maps_ui.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>After pulling up driving directions, maps.google.com will give you the different choices in routes to choose from just like iOS 6 Maps and iOS 5 maps do. Once you choose one you can immediately start. Google will track your location just like it would in the native Maps app but you'll have to make sure Safari stays running or you don't navigate away from the page by mistake.</p> <p>After choosing a route you can view a list of instructions directly underneath it. Tapping the maps icon at the top will give you a map view of the route. In my experience, maps.google.com is much choppier via Safari than both iOS 5 and iOS 6 Maps. Sometimes pressing on a button via the web version wouldn't always work or didn't seem very self explanatory.</p> <p>When it comes to user interface and ease of use, both Maps under iOS 6 and iOS 5 are easy to use and extremely alike design wise. The web version of Google Maps is choppy and doesn't seem to display data as quickly and efficiently as either iOS 6 Maps or iOS 5 Maps.</p> <h2>iOS Maps vs. iOS 5 Maps vs. maps.google.com: Directions</h2> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="348" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/field/image/2012/09/ios_5_maps_directions.jpg" title="" width="620" /></p> <p>When entering directions into iOS 6 Maps, iOS 5 Maps, and maps.google.com, most of the time, all three apps would present you with the same suggested routes. They also typically showed the same amount of travel time within minutes of each other.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 maps route directions" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_route_directions.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>iOS 6 Maps works very much like iOS 5 maps. Just search for a location and get driving or walking directions from your current location or manually type in a from and to address and iOS 6 Maps will give you directions. If there are several routes to choose from it'll show you a map view of each route. You can then tap each route and view the distance and time as well as a list view of the directions. Once you've found the route you'd like to take you can tap the <em>Route</em> button and you'll be on your way. Voice navigation will commence and you can close out of the maps app. Siri will then notify you when you've got a turn or other direction coming up. Anytime you want to view the directions you can tap the turn arrow in the upper left hand corner of iOS 6 Maps in order to view the directions from start to end.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 Maps directions differences" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/iOS-6_maps_directions_differences.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>One thing I did find interesting with iOS 6 Maps is that it doesn't always produce the same results each time. You can see above that when I searched for the same location on two separate iOS 6 Map apps on two different devices, the map data looks different on both. I wasn't able to figure out why that is and each time I searched for a location it would show different side streets than the last time I searched.</p> <p>iOS 5 Maps works the same way iOS 6 maps does but is more robust. You can not only find driving and walking directions but information as well. Anyone who's ever been in a big city they're unfamiliar with knows how important transit directions can be. When you don't have a car, they're a pretty big deal.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 5 maps route directions" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/ios_5_maps_route_directions.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>Once you've chosen the type of directions you want, you can either locate yourself and choose a location from there or manually type in directions. Once you're done you can tap the <em>Route</em> button and just like with iOS 6 maps, you'll be given several routes to choose from. Tap one to choose it and you'll be given directions along the top of the screen.</p> <p>Since iOS 5 Maps doesn't support voice navigation you'll only have the option to use regular navigation. Once you've completed a step you can tap the <em>Next</em> button to view the next step. When it comes to driving, voice navigation is definitely a better option and before iOS 6 Maps, there were several <a href="http://www.imore.com/navigon-scout-telenav-tomtom-iphone-navigation-app-shootout">third party GPS apps</a> that helped fill in the gap.</p> <p>Even though you don't have voice navigation, iOS 5 Maps contain much more robust data when it comes to the actual maps you're viewing than that of iOS 6. If you're trying to obtain directions in a rural area, you may not see side streets or other kinds of data in the Maps app under iOS 6 that is present under iOS 5 using Google Maps. That will be a problem for many users.</p> <p><img alt="google maps web route directions" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/googlewebapp_route_directions.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>If you're on iOS 6, maps.google.com makes a good fallback for when iOS 6 Maps isn't giving you the data you need. Since it pulls the same data as the iOS 5 Maps app, you'll get much better mapping data to work with. Again, it would be voice navigation or turn-by-turn directions but you'll see a much clearer picture and in some cases, better directions, than what you get with Maps on iOS 6.</p> <p>When it comes to mapping data, Maps for iOS 5 and maps.google.com contain much more data and are a lot more reliable than Apple's own iOS 6 Maps app when it comes to rural areas. If you live in a well populated area, iOS 6 Maps will still give you the data that you need and get you from point A to point B without a hitch.</p> <h2>iOS 6 Maps vs. iOS 5 Maps vs. maps.google.com: Turn-by-Turn navigation</h2> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="345" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_navigation_hero.jpg" title="" width="620" /></p> <p>iOS 6 Maps offers voice navigation and turn-by-turn direction. This is not a feature that is available through either iOS 5 Maps or maps.google.com. If you wanted voice navigation prior to iOS 6, you'd have to rely on a third party app to provide it. Considering some of them can get extremely high in price, it's nice to see Apple providing the feature natively.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 maps voice navigation" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_voice_navigation.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>Since iOS 6 was released as a beta back in June, I've been using voice navigation rather regularly and have to say I'm quite impressed with the Siri integration and how it works so seamlessly regardless what you're doing on your iPhone. You can run it in the background or view directions and a live map on the Lock screen. Whenever you're about to come up on a new direction, Siri will re-iterate the direction to you. If you've got music playing through your Music app, the music will simply fade out and Siri will provide the direction, then the music will fade back in.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 voice navigation with Siri" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/iOS_6_voice_navi.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>When using turn-by-turn and voice navigation, you aren't typically starting at a map but rather relying on your iPhone to keep you updated and let you know where you're at. When it comes down to it, I've been impressed. I've never gotten myself into a situation where iOS 6 Maps led me in a wrong direction or didn't get me where I needed to go.</p> <p>When testing locally in my home area that I know well, I did notice that sometimes iOS 6 Maps didn't make the fastest route the top suggestion but it still got me where I needed to go. In rare circumstances, the fastest route I knew wasn't always available but considering they typically involved side streets and directions that may be confusing for people that were not local to the area, I can see why iOS 6 Maps might not bring up a route like this. For users that don't know an area, main streets and fewer turns probably causes less confusion than a route that would have a lot of twists and turns. For simplicity's sake, I get it.</p> <p>Considering iOS 5 Maps and maps.google.com don't offer turn-by-turn or voice navigation, iOS 6 Maps wins.</p> <h2>iOS 6 Maps vs. iOS 5 Maps vs. maps.google.com: Street View vs Flyover</h2> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="353" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_flyover_sydney_hero.jpg" title="" width="620" /></p> <p>iOS 6 Maps comes with a new feature Apple is calling Flyover. The premise is that you can see an overhead view of an area on the map and use your fingers to pan in and out as well as rotate the map in a pretty amazing 3D view.</p> <p><img alt="iOS 6 Maps Flyover" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/iOS_6_maps_flyover.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>While the feature is pretty neat to look at, it doesn't have much application when it comes to real world use. Sure it's cool to use Flyover to view Chicago or other large cities around the world but besides being a cool feature to show off to your friends, you probably won't ever find yourself using it while driving.</p> <p>Flyover is also only limited to certain areas right now and they're pretty limited. They currently only include large cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, London, New York City, and some other larger metropolitan areas. There are also times when Flyover shows some pretty wild inaccuracies, as you can see above. I don't remember the Eiffel Tower looking quite like that.</p> <p><img alt="google maps street view on iphone" class="image-large aligncenter" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2012/09/google_maps_street_view_iphone.jpg" title="" /></p> <p>Google has a service that is somewhat similar to Flyover called Street View. While it isn't an overhead view, it provides a street level view of areas. When it's available, you'll get an icon next to a location that shows a red circle with a person inside it. Tapping it in iOS 5 Maps will take you down to street level. From here you can move up and down streets and pan 360 degrees in any direction.</p> <p>While the iOS 5 Maps app offers Street View, you don't currently have access to it from the maps.google.com site in mobile Safari.</p> <p>Considering Google has had the better part of a decade to put together Street View, it'll be available in a lot more areas than Flyover. It's also a much more useful feature than Flyover when it comes to practical utility.</p> <h2>iOS 6 Maps vs. iOS 5 Maps vs. maps.google.com: The bottom line</h2> <p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="345" src="http://cdn.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/field/image/2012/09/ios_6_maps_ui_hero.jpg" title="" width="620" /></p> <p>Google had a tremendous head start over Apple when it comes to the mapping business (here's what <a href="http://blog.treonauts.com/2006/10/google_maps_com.html">Google Maps looked like on the PalmOS Treo 680</a> back in 2007 -- a year before the first iPhone was even released). That's obvious when comparing map data between iOS 6 Maps and iOS 5 Maps. Apple probably could have avoided a lot of the negative backlash over iOS 6 Maps if they <a href="http://www.imore.com/apple-ceo-tim-cook-writes-open-letter-customers-concerning-ios-6-maps">better set expectations</a> and perhaps released the new Maps with a beta bandaid the way they did Siri. But that's neither here nor there.</p> <p>If you have an <a href="http://www.imore.com/iphone">iPhone 5</a>, you have no choice and iOS 6 maps will be your default location service. In my experience, when it comes to practical utility and using the voice navigation in iOS 6 Maps, I've always gotten where I need to go. The addition of turn-by-turn is a spectacular upgrade. The animations are nearly flawless and the out-of-app banners and Lock screen navigation are stellar. In my tests, if I made a wrong turn, iOS 6 Maps would automatically reroute me quickly and accurately. Outlet streets and side streets are not always clearly labeled like they are in iOS 5 Maps but I haven't found it to be something that caused me to lose my way.</p> <p>The iOS 6 maps themselves are beautifully rendered and the vector illustrations are a huge improvement over iOS 5's bitmap tiles. Flyover is more of a novelty and not a feature that most people will use regularly for mapping, and while StreetView can be as well, seeing was a shop or location looks like at ground level is often more helpful than what it looks like from the clouds.</p> <p>The loss of transit directions is incredibly inconvenient for those who use them daily. If you happen to have a great transit app in your area, it can mitigate the annoyance, but having to leave Maps for any reason can't be viewed as anything but a regression. Transit apps should be a value add, not a must have.</p> <p>If you're in a heavily populated U.S. city and there's a great transit app in the App Store that covers your needs, iOS 6 Maps will probably be fine for you, and given the controversy you can be sure Apple is working day and night to make it better.</p> <p>If you're in other parts of the country or the world where the iOS Map data is poor, maps.google.com and its more robust and reliable data set is a functional alternative and fallback. Web apps are never as good as native apps, but until Google stops enjoying themselves long enough to launch a real Google Maps app into the App Store, it's one of the few ways to complement iOS 6 maps.</p> <p>If you have a previous iOS device, depend on Maps, and you're on the fence about updating you can stay on iOS 5.1 and keep using iOS 5 maps, but you're probably better off upgrading for a lot of other reasons and checking out <a href="http://www.imore.com/navigon-scout-telenav-tomtom-iphone-navigation-app-shootout">third party navigation apps</a> that are more robust than <em>both</em> Mitt Romney appeared near Washington, while President Barack Obama spoke in Virginia Beach. <p>Speaking in the military town of?Virginia Beach,?Obama called for a new "economic patriotism" to help middle-income voters whose support his campaign is targeting.</p><p>Romney spoke at an?American Legion?hall a few miles from the?Pentagon?and blamed?Obama for $1.2 trillion in potential defense cuts that could bring heavy job losses to the?Virginia?suburbs of Washington, where the Democrat is popular.</p><p>The?Pentagon?is home to the nation's military command.</p><p>Obama's economic patriotism focus was a new angle in his campaign stump speech and was likely aimed at the state's large population of veterans. The message linked to?Obama's theme that he - and not Romney - is promoting tax policies and social programs that support the middle class.</p><p>"During campaign season you always hear a lot about patriotism. Well, you know what? It's time for a new economic patriotism. An economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class,"?Obama told a crowd of some 7,000 in?Virginia Beach.</p><p>Veterans also featured in a new?Obama campaign ad released on Thursday that played Romney's voice from his "47 percent" video over images of working Americans, ex-military members and a young family in a poor, rural setting. No other voices appear in the ad.</p><p>Romney describes 47 percent of the electorate in the secretly recorded video as "victims" reliant on federal aid.</p><p>Polls show the clip has damaged voters' perception of Romney, though most people will still decide who to vote for based on economic issues. It was a ritual, a tradition, a part of the coming-of-age of the golden days of gaming. But did you ever stop to wonder if blowing your moist breath all over a fragile electronic product was actually the right thing to do?</p> <p>When the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was released in the US, its design is believed to be what led to the cartridge-blowing phenomenon. Having the game encased inside a hidden compartment led to the conception that it could become filled with dust and other particles, since users could not really see where cartridges made contact with the system. So blowing into the system, and blowing into the cartridges, seemed to make sense. The most compelling reason was because it seemed to work. Of course, there is also an argument that taking the cartridge in and out without blowing into it could have had the same effect.</p> <p>Chris Higgins from Mental Floss decided to research the age-old phenomenon, and found that experts tend to think that it was overall a bad idea, with some calling it nothing more than a placebo effect. Others say it actually led to damage of the games over time.</p> <p>Also brought to light was a study that gaming enthusiast Frankie Viturello conducted in which he blew into one NES cartridge every day for a month, did not tamper with another one, and then used both of them equally. The results can be seen in the picture above.
