Goal:?Do not reduce active field space at Stead Park in Washington, DC.

A plan has been proposed to reduce the active field space at Stead Park by as much as 25 percent. Stead Park is located in Dupont Circle, a highly urbanized area in the northwest region of Washington DC that already has a limited number of recreational green spaces available for children, youth and adults.

The members of the organization Friends of Stead drafted the decision to reduce active field space as part of a plan to redesign Stead Park. On October 3, Friends of Stead will present their plan to allocate $400,000 towards park renovations to the Department of Parks and Recreation. Instead of using the limited funds to pave a large portion of the park, they should be using them to renovate the existing field with improved fencing, added benches and upgraded lighting.

If 25 percent of the current green field space is replaced by cement and infrastructure, current community leagues that practice soccer, volleyball, kickball and other sports will no longer have the opportunity to engage in their recreational activities. Additionally, local schools will not be able to use the fields. Overall, the?reduction?of green space would have grave consequences for the health and wellness of DC residents who use Stead Park regularly.

I am writing to express my opposition to the plan drafted by Friends of Stead to reduce the active field space of Stead Park by 25 percent in favor of redesigning the park.?Washington DC already has a limited number of recreational geen spaces. Therefore, the green field space in Stead Park is of utmost importance for the health and wellbeing of the?children, youth and adults that spend time there regularly.

The plan proposed by the members of Friends of Stead allocates $400,000 to the redesign and renovation of the park. Realistically, the proposed renovations would cost more than $400,000 and have the undesired effect of reducing active field space. Instead, I would like to see that money go towards?renovating the existing field with improved fencing, added benches and upgraded lighting.

If the active field space of Stead Park is reduced,?current community leagues that practice soccer, volleyball, kickball and other sports will no longer have the opportunity to engage in their recreational activities. Additionally, local schools will not be able to use to fields.

I strongly urge you to oppose the proposed plans to reduce the active field space at Stead Park and instead allocate funding to improving the quality of the current field so our treasured community park can continue to serve the needs of the community.
