Would you let your teen have sex at home? | Bakersfield Mom

By her own definition, it?s been ?quite a ride? the past few months for sociologist Amy T. Schalet, author of ?Not Under My Roof: Parents, Teens, and the Culture of Sex.?

Published in November, her book takes a look at the divergent attitudes and approach of parents in the Netherlands and their counterparts in the U.S. when it comes to adolescent sexuality.?

Schalet?s family is from the U.S. and she was born here. But she grew up in the Netherlands because her father, a biologist, taught at Leiden University. She returned to the U.S. midway through college.

The title of Schalet?s book hints at one big difference between American and Dutch parents that has captured a lot of attention: In the Netherlands, teenage couples are often permitted to sleep together in the family home.

Schalet is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has been interviewed on TV and radio and by a variety of online and print publications. She also has written opinion pieces for the New York Times and the Huffington Post.

Recently, she was in Orange County as a featured speaker in the CONSIDER THIS series of discussions presented by Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties. About 140 people attended the luncheon.

Schalet?s visit and the publication of her book come at a time of intensifying conflict over women?s reproductive rights and access to contraception and abortion.

A tale of two countries

Schalet began her talk by pointing out the much higher rates of teen pregnancy and teen births in the U.S. than in the Netherlands. A 2007 report referenced in ?Not Under My Roof? showed the birth rate among females ages 15-19 was eight times higher here.

More poverty and less access to socio-economic resources is only part of the explanation, said Schalet, who advocates for the kind of open dialogue between American teens and their parents that exists between their Dutch counterparts.

?Dutch teens have better access to sexual health education and resources and they learn more than just not to do it,? she told her audience.

In the Netherlands, most parents view sex as a natural part of a developing relationship between two young people, and that?s why they allow older teenage couples in a serious, loving relationship to sleep together.

In the U.S., we tend to dramatize teen sex, she said, with talk of ?raging hormones? and boys ?wanting only one thing,? and drawing a line of shame between being a ?good girl? and a girl who has a sexual self.

?Dramatization drives not only teen sex out of the home, but also the conversation about (sex),? she said.

Food for thought

One grandmother in the audience, Natalye Black of Irvine, Calif., said the notion of parents validating a coed sleepover for teens had never occurred to her.

?It made me think, well, they?re having sex in the car or at a party, if one is going to be real about it,? said Black, 73, who has six grandchildren ages 15 to 26. ?It doesn?t say there?s a right way or a wrong way, but it speaks to me to ?consider this.??

The national conversation of late is forcing many to think about ?things that are kind of under the table,? continued Black, adding that she plans to discuss Schalet?s research with her family.

?I?m surely going to talk with my grandchildren about it,? Black said. ?It will be interesting to hear what my children ? their parents ? will say.?

Before Schalet spoke to the Planned Parenthood gathering, she discussed more details of her book with The Register.

Q. What do statistics tell us are the most startling differences in the attitude and approach to teen sex here and in the Netherlands?

A. There?s national statistics and then my own research. I would say some of the most startling national statistics are the teen pregnancy and birth rates. Teen pregnancy rates are about four times as high here. Birth rates about eight times as high.

Another very big difference when we look between the two countries is the percentage of young women who are on birth control at first sex. In the Netherlands, 6 out of 10 young women are on the pill at first intercourse and in the U.S. it?s around 1 in 5.

The average age of first intercourse is similar ? 17, 18. But the degree to which they?re prepared at that time is very different. That shows the different attitudes.

Q. And there?s a distinction to be made between the appropriateness of sexual activity in the early teens and in the second half of teenage years?

A. For the Dutch parents that I?ve interviewed, the moment at which a young person can be ready is typically thought to be 16, 17, 18 ? it depends on how conservative vs. liberal a family is, how mature a young person is.

Q. In an interview you did last month with New England public radio, you talk about how American girls face what you call the ?slander of the slut? or the potential of being ?labeled a slut if they?re too proactive around their sexuality.?

A. Yeah, yeah. It?s very relevant right now ? In both countries there actually is a sexual double standard to some extent. Boys are given more leeway than girls. But in the Netherlands if a girl is in a relationship, she?s not a slut. For wanting sex, for making decisions about sex, that doesn?t make you a slut.

What was fascinating about the U.S. is that the label of the slut seemed to be able to be stuck on any girl for almost any reason. It kind of was this free floating label that even the suggestion of sex, as in the case of Sandra Fluke, seemed to give people permission to call young women sluts.

I?ve been following this discussion very closely with Rush Limbaugh, and I think that it is making people come out and say this isn?t right, this is also not healthy. On some level, even though it?s not usually part of our political conversation, we all know that almost everyone in the United States has sex before marriage, usually before they turn 20, and, if not, before they turn 25.

Saddling girls and young women with this double burden, at least this was a problem that I saw in my research, they often felt in their parents? eyes they would be a disappointment if they were to engage in sex or if they already did.

And in their peer culture they were dealing with the potential of being called a slut without having adults who could say, no, this is part of your life that you are allowed to own and make choices about.

Q. How do you foresee your research, or your book, having an impact on parents and teens here regarding sexuality, health and relationships? What would you want them to get out of it?

A. One of the things that I want people to get out of it is just to see examples of how parents and teens can talk about a sexual relationship more openly. Not only is there a dramatization of teen sexuality, but there?s also especially a dramatization of the teen-parent relationship. Like this has to be hard, this had to be embarrassing, this has to be difficult.

Well, if you never talk about it, it is. But once you start it can become something that doesn?t have to be as difficult.

One reason why I try to point this out is that it?s very important, for both teens and parents, that the relationship, the connectedness, between young people and their parents remain. And what I found in the U.S. families a lot of times is this fear of disappointment. And so there?s not a sharing and then there?s hiding and then people just don?t know what?s going on in each other?s lives.

That?s a problem ? especially for girls but also for boys, who don?t get a lot of support in our culture for understanding their feelings, for forming relationships.

? It doesn?t have to be you permit sleepovers, because many American parents are uncomfortable with that and will remain so. But the point is you can maintain the connection and you can maintain a conversation.

Mick Foley breaks fast with RAINN raffle winners

MIAMI ? The winners of a WrestleMania raffle sponsored by Mick Foley and benefiting RAINN received the thrill of a lifetime Friday when they had breakfast with The Hardcore Legend himself. (PHOTOS)

Graeme McGaw of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and Vince Morales of Lake Geneva, Wis., won the raffle, which raised nearly $60,000 for RAINN before closing earlier this month. RAINN is the largest anti-sexual violence charity in the U.S.

In addition to breaking bread with Foley, McGaw and Morales won tickets to WrestleMania Axxess, Saturday?s WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the WrestleMania XXVIII event itself, and Monday?s Raw SuperShow in Miami.

The inspiration for the WrestleMania raffle concept came from Foley?s successful ?10 for RAINN? effort last year, which was a Twitter campaign that asked for $10 donations. Foley has been closely tied to RAINN ever since.

?I was a donor and a volunteer, so I could vouch not only for the fact they provided great services, but also for fact that every dollar is used wisely,? he told WWE.com Friday.

For McGaw and Morales, the chance to share breakfast with The Hardcore Legend was much like this year?s WrestleMania ? a ?Once in a Lifetime? opportunity.

?I never thought in a million years that I would win,? said McGaw. ?This is my dream come true.?

McGaw and Morales became friends more than a decade ago on a wrestling message board. After The New Age Outlaws famously locked Foley and Terry Funk in a dumpster and pushed them off a stage during a February 1998 edition of Raw, it was McGaw whom Morales reached out to first to discuss the chaotic scene.

?He's one of my childhood heroes, and we're here now and it's crazy,? Morales said of Foley. ?This is quite the experience.?

Pest Control - Save your dream house from bed bugs

This is a story of one of the house in Toronto, just seven years old house. The family was living very happily and was enjoying their lives. All of a sudden, they started to experience itchiness on their skin. In the beginning they did not know what the problem was, but later they found out but never took an action. During this time bed bugs developed their colonies, started from the basement and then they slowly spread all over the house.

Home owners first tried to use OTC (over the counter products) from different stores to overcome the problem and thought they overcame the problem. They weren't worried anymore, but they were not aware of the actual mystery of the bed bugs. Within no time bed bugs attacked again and started to enjoy the human blood and multiplied very rapidly.

In second attempt the respective owner tried to overcome the bed bug problem by hiring nonlicensed person for the bed bug control. He used some aerosol product which were also purchased from the open market and sprayed their mattress, box spring only. Within one week, bed bugs reappeared and it was now actually worse.

They decided to hire licensed exterminator to get rid of bed bugs, he tried his best, but after few months tinny creature came out again, sucking the blood. This situation was very horrible for land lords. They decided to take the advice from Minatory of health, the inspector came to see the situation and he informed the land lord that they should take care of the next door neighbor too, because they were responsible to spread to next door (because of semidetached house).

After facing this entire situation, the owner decided to take following steps: - Throw out all the furniture of the house. - Leave/vacant the house. - And finally decided to sell the house as early as possible.

Before taking final step for pest control, the owner decided to call PSS (PEST SOLUTION SERVICES).We went there to inspect the situation and found: 4- Bed bug eggs 5- Nymph 6- Adult

Each and every single item such as: - Bed frames - Mattresses - Box springs - Night stands - Door and window frames - Cracks/crevices in ceiling - Cracks/crevices around base boards

Were very highly infested with all stages of bed bugs along with their eggs

We treated each and every single item in the house by using following protocol: VACUUMING - Bed frames (after de-assembling them) - All furniture - Mattresses - Box spring - Travelling suite cases

- Base boards - Carpets (Nymphs were found in the carpet)

STEAMING: - Mattresses - Box springs

Spraying: All wooden furniture was sprayed by a chemical after mixing with water. DUST: Very thin film of the dust was injected in cracks and crevices all over the house. Note: We also treated the following too: - All closets. - All hall ways. - All wash rooms - Kitchen. - Laundry room We also treated all phone jacks and electrical out lets too.

The respective family moved to a hotel for couple of days to stay away from the treated house and came back hoping they do not experience anymore bed bug bites. There results were great and very positive. Now they are enjoying their lives in the same house for which they were thinking to sell because of bed bugs.

Same process was used in second treatment (chemistry of chemicals were changed) after fifteen days. No complaints/no biting/no itching. There was no evidence reported since the treatment, almost one year gone. NOTE: 5- Do not try to overcome the problem of the bed bugs yourself. 6- Do not go for cheaper treatment. 7- Deep inspections required. 8- Bed bug treatment is time consuming.

Personal Injury Attorney: Methods To Pay For Legal Help

You deserve to have the help of a personal injury attorney, no matter your financial situation. This is why there are several ways to afford the help of a firm. If you think you cannot afford it, think about the fact that you may have to pay for all of your medical bills, property damage, and other expenses related to the injuries on your own, which is much more expensive.

If you cannot afford to pay your personal injury attorney upfront through cash or debit card, you may be able to work out a payment plan. In fact, many attorneys accept financing as a way to pay for legal assistance, so you should definitely ask about this possibility. Make sure you understand the terms of the agreement so that you are able to pay every month on time, since otherwise you might jeopardize the legal help you are getting.

If your lawyer does not offer financing, you might consider putting the fees on a credit card. This is essentially the same, especially if you have a low interest card. It will allow you to get the help you need now instead of waiting until you have saved up the money. In the end, you will likely get back any money you had to pay in interest since you will probably get more than what your injuries and damages cost you. This means you should have enough left over to pay off your card once you get what you are owed.

Some lawyers even work for free if you lose the case. Thus, you only pay when you win the case, and by then you should have more than enough money to pay both your lawyer and your bills related to the crash. This is called a contingency fee, and some lawyers? use this method when they believe you deserve help even though you cannot current afford it. If you can find a personal injury attorney who uses the contingency fee method, you should discuss your case beforehand with him or her since many such lawyers only take on strong cases.

You should use your initial consultation to talk about the payment methods available to you. State falls down in policing real estate broker | Dorchester Reporter

The Boston Globe published a troubling but important story in its Business section on Sunday (subscription required). The article, by Jennifer McKim, revealed that a Mansfield man, Michael David Scott, continues to operate a busy real estate business focused on properties in Dorchester and Mattapan even as he awaits trial in a federal court for 68 charges of mortgage fraud.

Most disturbingly, the Globe report detailed that Scott continues to conduct business with the official approval of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which has not moved to suspend or revoke his license to broker real estate deals, despite the many serious accusations lodged against him.

While Scott has not yet been convicted of a crime, the case brought against him by the US Attorney?s office constitutes what may be the most sweeping and egregious example of alleged mortgage fraud in the city of Boston in recent years. Scott is alleged to have partnered with straw buyers to defraud mortgage lenders by using ?false and fraudulent? means, according to the September 2010 indictment, which detailed abuses at more than a dozen properties, all but one of them in Dorchester.

As US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said, ?Frauds of this kind line the pockets of unscrupulous schemers at the expense not only of mortgage lenders, but of so many homeowners who saw property values in whole neighborhoods decimated.?

The fact that our state government decided to allow Scott to continue his activity with state approval reeks of poor decision-making or simple indifference within the Patrick administration. A spokesman for the state?s Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation told the Globe that the agency began an internal investigation of Scott when it learned of the 2010 indictment against him. But the spokesman told the Globe that the office ?voluntarily stayed our investigation [so as] not to risk creating complications for the criminal case.?

But what about the Commonwealth?s duty to protect consumers? As Scott?s trial date looms off on the distant horizon, the still-licensed broker has been doing a brisk business under a new company name, The Crawford Group LLC. In recent months, his renewed sales activity in Dorchester has generated several complaints ? most urging the state to at least suspend Scott?s license until his case is resolved.

Jessie Cuddy, a local real estate professional who is among those who alerted the state to Scott?s recent activities, told the Globe: ?It is a disgrace to the real estate professionals in this town and to this industry as a whole that Michael David Scott is still walking around practicing real estate with a license that appears to be in good standing,?? Cuddy said.

Cuddy is right. It?s not as if the state doesn?t sanction other license holders. In fact, they routinely suspend licenses of brokers for minor lapses? including any failure to complete professional development classes. The Globe reported that 113 licenses have been suspended since last July. And yet, Scott?s ticket to sell has not been stripped, even though he is the only broker among the state?s 26,000-plus license holders to be under criminal indictment right now.

Everyone ? Michael Scott included ? is entitled to their day in court. But in the meantime the state has a responsibility to protect homeowners, potential buyers, and the community at large from individuals who they suspect have been working outside the bounds of the law. The Patrick administration has failed mightily in this case and its cavalier attitude sends the wrong message to both the industry and consumers alike.

Foster Parenting at Midlife - SecondAct.com

Foster Parenting at MidlifeJudy Cockerton celebrated her 47th birthday with a solo trip to Italy. For the happily married mother of two and Boston-area toy store owner, the getaway was a welcome break from a fulfilling if busy life, a chance to reflect on her accomplishments and look toward the pleasant future now set to unfold.

"I honestly thought I'd still be working in my toy stores as a grandmother," she says, with a laugh. "That would be that."

And then a single moment changed everything.

Her photojournalist husband arrived home from work one evening and showed her a disturbing article about a five-month-old baby who'd been left alone and kidnapped while his overwhelmed foster mother went to pick up another child. Cockerton's reaction was swift and unequivocal:

All of us are responsible for foster kids. Let's see if we can be a foster family.

While many families would have been understandably hesitant, Cockerton says her spouse and kids, then 12 and 18, all eagerly jumped on board. She and her husband enrolled in the state-mandated training required of foster parents, and the day before her 48th birthday, two tiny sisters -- ages five months and 17 months -- arrived at her door.

"This was a very different birthday from the year before," she recalls. "Everyone wanted to meet the girls. We had a picnic in the park with my daughter and four of my best friends."

Thirteen years later, Cockerton is not only an adoptive mother but also the founder and CEO of Treehouse, an innovative intergenerational community in Easthampton, Mass., where families who are adopting children from foster care live side by side with elders in a close-knit neighborhood setting. As a full-time advocate for foster kids -- she sold her toy stores in 2001 -- she's also active in the nationwide effort to improve life for the estimated 400,000 to 500,000 U.S. children whose birth parents are unable to care for them in any given year.

For children who have already experienced more than their share of trauma, uncertainty and loss, the importance of stable, caring foster homes cannot be overstated. Foster parents provide a critical safe haven until children can return home, move in with relatives or be adopted.

Older children are especially in need of homes -- as of 2009, the median age of kids in foster care was just under 10 -- and they may be a good match for midlife parents who don't necessarily want to start over with an infant or a toddler.

Experts stress that serving as a foster parent is a serious commitment, and deciding whether the role is right for you merits serious thought. Laws and policies for approving family foster homes vary from state to state, and a good first step is to become familiar with your state's requirements and resources. Foster parents are reimbursed for child-related costs, but this varies by state and by the child's needs.

While becoming a midlife foster parent is certainly not for everyone, for many the experience has proved life-changing in the best possible way.

"I bless the day I got Abel," says California writer Carolyn Nash, who became a single foster mom at 38 when her "Prince Charming, three kids, suburban house" fantasy had failed to materialize. "Just saying that, I get choked up. It was the hardest thing I ever did and the best thing I ever did."

In her memoir Raising Abel, Nash -- she uses a pen name and pseudonyms to protect her children's privacy -- details the often-harrowing experience of raising the sexually abused 3-year-old whom she later adopted. At 48, she went on to foster and adopt a second son, who arrived as a three-week-old infant. Having escaped the horrors that marked Abel's early years, her second son, now seven, has enjoyed a relatively easy childhood.

If she were to offer one piece of advice to prospective foster parents, Nash says it would be to realistically assess both their strengths and their limitations.

"It's really important to know yourself -- to say 'This is what I can do. This is what I can't do,'" she says. "Don't go into it like I did, thinking you can save the world." At the same time, Nash acknowledges the paradox at the heart of this advice. "I wouldn't tell someone to do what I did, but it's the best thing I ever did."

It's also essential to keep in mind that when you become a foster parent, you're joining a child's team, which is likely to include social workers, birth family members and educators. On the upside, you won't be alone dealing with questions and challenges. On the downside, you'll have far less autonomy than you would with your own child. "You need to be able to adopt a graceful and flexible lifestyle," Cockerton says.

For Cockerton and her family, this approach continues to pay off. One of her original foster children is now her beloved daughter Brianna. (Brianna's sister was adopted by a nearby family, and the girls remain close.)

Of course, there are pros and cons to being a midlife parent, whether biological, adoptive or foster. On the one hand, you have perspective and stability. On the other, it may be difficult keeping up with an energetic child. But for all the undeniable challenges, there are also tremendous rewards. As Nash succinctly puts it, "It's really hard not to fall in love."

Hackers turn credit report sites against consumers

Dan Clements

This hacker shopping list appeared recently on what appears to be a Russian-based website offering credit reports for sale. Prices are based on the victims' credit scores.

By Bob Sullivan

The most important tool consumers have to fight against ID theft has been turned against them by hackers, msnbc.com has learned.?Websites that offer consumers a chance to see their credit reports are being brazenly used by hackers to steal victims' information.

The prices of the reports rise and fall depending on the credit score of the victim. For consumers with credit scores in the 750s,?report data might fetch $80; reports from victims with scores in the low 600s sell for about half that, according to "for sale" pages viewed by msnbc.com.

"It shows how people with good credit and a net worth now have a bull?s-eye on their backs," said Dan Clements, who operates the Internet security firm CloudEyez.com. Clements gave msnbc.com a virtual tour of the marketplaces, which he has been observing for months.

The most troubling part of these markets however?? many hosted in the .su domain, which stands for the now-defunct Soviet Union?? is the ready availability of credit reports and the hackers' bragging about how easy it is to infiltrate websites like AnnualCreditReport.com or CreditReport.com.

"I'm selling super prime credit reports and scores which include all 3 bureaus and other information," brags one advertisement on one site.?

Clements helped msnbc.com view dozens of credit reports on the forum, many of which had CreditReport.com stamped across the first page. But others viewed by msnbc.com indicated they were stolen from AnnualCreditReport.com and Equifax.com. Clements said most other online credit report and some credit score suppliers were hit, too --? he shared a page showing a victim's score produced at CreditKarma.com.

"We really have no idea how many reports have been used or put up for sale in the 'libraries,'" said Clements, who also operates a consulting firm.?

The credit report trade?shows why even?simple credit card fraud ? long considered a relatively benign form?of ID theft ? can escalate quickly into a full-blown identity nightmare. Criminals with stolen cards can obtain background reports, credit reports and ultimately open new accounts using the information gleaned about the victim, Clements said.

In one how-to posted on a bulletin board, a hacker describes one brute-force attack used to gain access to credit report websites. Most sites are protected by "challenge" questions such as, "Which bank holds the mortgage on your home?"? But there's a critical flaw, the hacker said:

"Normally all ... of them will ask you the same question," the hacker wrote.

Because the sites use the multiple choice format, it's easy to use the process of elimination and determine the correct answers, he claims.

The hacker explained that the trick is to open several credit report sites and keep trying random answers until one set?works.

The recipe is highly detailed, including helpful tips such as, "Take a shot of screen to remember what answers you gave. After that click the submit button and see what it says."

Dan Clements

This bulletin board post, intentionally cut off to be incomplete by msnbc.com, shows a hacker discussing how he allegedly defeats credit report website security.

A would-be credit report thief needs additional information to get credit report access, but that can often be gleaned by ordering background checks using the victim's stolen credit card. Reports stolen from Intellius.com and BeenVerified.com, which provide previous addresses and a host of other valuable information, also were found on the site.

One victim whose credit report was spotted on the site told msnbc.com that she found one instance of credit card fraud on her accounts around the time the data theft was first discovered by Clements. She now pays to maintain a credit freeze on her credit reports.

"You hear about this kind of thing all the time but you never think it will happen to you," said the victim, who requested that her name be withheld.?"And when it happens, you think, 'Great. Now what do I do?'?

For years, consumers have been advised to visit AnnualCreditReport.com once each year to see their reports. Federal law requires?the nation's three largest credit bureaus ? Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union ? to maintain the site, under the direction of the Federal Trade Commission.

That's still good advice?? looking at your credit report is?the best way to detect identity theft. But the site is apparently both an ally and a foe now.

The FTC would not comment on hackers' use of AnnualCreditReport.com.

In the past, the FTC has sued companies for inadvertently selling credit report data to hackers, however.?In 2011, the agency settled with Settlementone Credit Corp., ACRAnet Inc. and Fajilan Associates after those firms unknowingly sold reports to criminals. The three firms were ordered to submit to 20 years' worth of security audits.

Those firms prepare reports for car dealerships and other credit granters. Raiding consumer-facing sites like AnnualCreditReport.com is even more brazen, however.

CreditReport.com is operated by credit bureau Experian; that firm also provides credit reports to consumers as part of AnnualCreditReport.com.

"Experian is aware of schemes such as this to access reports illegally, and we have taken measures within our systems to mitigate the issue," said Experian in an e-mail to msnbc.com. "We are constantly evolving our systems to prevent fraud and criminal activity, but do not comment publicly on the specifics of our fraud prevention methods."?

Trans Union and Equifax, which also provide?reports through AnnualCreditReport.com,?did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Kenneth Lin, CEO of CreditKarma.com, said the firm had received "a handful" of complaints about compromised accounts and worked quickly to shut down access.?CreditKarma credit score reports show no account information or other personal data, so the security risk posed by an imposter getting a victim's score is minimal, he said.

"That's intentional. That's a security feature," he said.?The site also uses more difficult challenge questions than AnnualCreditReport.com, Lin added.

Solving the problem of credit reports stolen through consumer websites is no small task. One irony of the hackers' ability to easily raid such sites is that many consumers report great frustration getting their own credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com.? The challenge questions are sometimes so arcane ? such as, "Which bank held your previous auto loan?" -- that legitimate consumers can't answer them easily. ?

"But anyone who does any research can probably figure out what the answers are before you can," said Jay Foley, who runs IDTheftInfoSource.com. In other words, it's too easy for criminals to get credit reports, but it's too hard for consumers.

One of the websites where Clements observed the stolen card activity ? kurupt.su ? dropped mysteriously off the Web late last week.?The site was well-known as a haunt for criminals and scam artists in the computer underground. But Clements says that will hardly put a dent in the stolen data trade.

"You currently can't stop this scam because the 'soft inquiry' of a consumer pulling their own report doesn't record in the majority of credit files," he said, explaining that a consumer would never know if a criminal pulled a copy of their report. "Unfortunately, it allows the bad guys, by impersonating you, to download your credit file and leave no tracks."

(AP) ? A slain Florida teenager and the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed him exchanged words before the teen punched him in the nose and began banging the man's head on the ground, according to the watch captain's account of the confrontation that led to the shooting.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that George Zimmerman told police he lost 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in the neighborhood he regularly patrolled and was walking back to his vehicle last month when the youth approached him from behind.

The two exchanged words, Zimmerman said, and Martin then punched him, jumped on top of him and began banging his head on a sidewalk. Zimmerman said he began crying for help; Martin's family thinks it was their son who was crying out. Witness accounts differ and 911 tapes in which the voices are heard are not clear.

A statement from Sanford police said the newspaper story was "consistent" with evidence turned over to prosecutors.

Because Martin was black and Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother, the case has become a racial flashpoint that has civil rights leaders and others leading a series of protests in Sanford and around the country. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense and has not been arrested.

Meanwhile, Martin's parents are blaming police for leaking information about their son being suspended for marijuana and details about the fight he had with Zimmerman that portrayed the teen as the aggressor.

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, and family attorneys said Monday that it was part of an effort to demonize her son.

"They killed my son and now they're trying to kill his reputation," Fulton told reporters.

Martin was suspended by Miami-Dade County schools because traces of marijuana were found in a plastic baggie in his book bag, family spokesman Ryan Julison said. Martin was serving the suspension when he was shot Feb. 26.

The Sanford Police Department insisted there was no authorized release of the new information but acknowledged there may have been a leak. City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. said it would be investigated and the person responsible could be fired.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said the link between the youth and marijuana should have no bearing on the probe into his shooting death. State and federal agencies are investigating, with a grand jury set to convene April 10.

"If he and his friends experimented with marijuana, that is completely irrelevant," Crump said. "What does it have to do with killing their son?"

The state Department of Juvenile Justice confirmed Monday that Martin does not have a juvenile offender record. The information came after a public records request by The Associated Press.

Despite the news of Martin's possible actions the night of the shooting, rallies demanding the arrest of the 28-year-old Zimmerman spread from Florida to Indiana.

Thousands rallied Monday on the steps of the Georgia state Capitol. The crowd chanted "I am Trayvon!" and "Arrest Zimmerman now!" The protest ended with the crowd linking hands and singing, "We Shall Overcome."

Students from Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University encouraged their fellow students to talk to their lawmakers about gun laws. Students wore hoodies that said, "I am Trayvon Martin" and lofted signs reading, "Don't shoot!" and "I could be next."

"We're humans, and even more so, we're American citizens, and we have the expectation that justice will be delivered," said Ronnie Mosley, 20, a student at Morehouse who helped organize the rally.

Back in Sanford, city officials named a 23-year veteran of the police department as acting chief. The appointment of Capt. Darren Scott, who is African-American, came days after Chief Bill Lee, who is white, temporarily stepped down as the agency endured withering criticism over its handling of the case.

"I know each one of you ? and everyone watching ? would like to have a quick, positive resolution to this recent event," Scott told reporters. "I urge everyone to let the system take its course."

The Sanford City Commission held its first meeting Monday since giving Lee a no confidence vote, which led to his ouster. Martin's parents both addressed the panel, urging them to take steps to arrest Zimmerman. More than 500 people crowded into the meeting, which was moved from City Hall to the Sanford Civil Center.

"We are asking for justice," said Tracy Martin, the teenager's father.

Civil rights leader Al Sharpton warned commissioners that Sanford risked becoming a 21st century version of civil rights struggle in the South during the 1960s.

Sharpton said Martin's parents endured "insults and lies" Monday over reports that their son attacked Zimmerman.

Also Monday, an attorney for Martin's mother confirmed that she filed trademark applications for two slogans containing her son's name: "Justice for Trayvon" and "I Am Trayvon." The applications said the trademarks could be used for such things as DVDs and CDs.

The trademark attorney, Kimra Major-Morris, said in an email that Fulton wants to protect intellectual property rights for "projects that will assist other families who experience similar tragedies."

Asked if Fulton had any profit motive, the attorney replied: "None."

Tiny reader makes fast, cheap DNA sequencing feasible

Monday, March 26, 2012

Researchers have devised a nanoscale sensor to electronically read the sequence of a single DNA molecule, a technique that is fast and inexpensive and could make DNA sequencing widely available.

The technique could lead to affordable personalized medicine, potentially revealing predispositions for afflictions such as cancer, diabetes or addiction.

"There is a clear path to a workable, easily produced sequencing platform," said Jens Gundlach, a University of Washington physics professor who leads the research team. "We augmented a protein nanopore we developed for this purpose with a molecular motor that moves a DNA strand through the pore a nucleotide at a time."

The researchers previously reported creating the nanopore by genetically engineering a protein pore from a mycobacterium. The nanopore, from Mycobacterium smegmatis porin A, has an opening 1 billionth of a meter in size, just large enough for a single DNA strand to pass through.

To make it work as a reader, the nanopore was placed in a membrane surrounded by potassium-chloride solution, with a small voltage applied to create an ion current flowing through the nanopore. The electrical signature changes depending on the type of nucleotide traveling through the nanopore. Each type of DNA nucleotide ? cytosine, guanine, adenine and thymine ? produces a distinctive signature.

The researchers attached a molecular motor, taken from an enzyme associated with replication of a virus, to pull the DNA strand through the nanopore reader. The motor was first used in a similar effort by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, but they used a different pore that could not distinguish the different nucleotide types.

Gundlach is the corresponding author of a paper published online March 25 by Nature Biotechnology that reports a successful demonstration of the new technique using six different strands of DNA. The results corresponded to the already known DNA sequence of the strands, which had readable regions 42 to 53 nucleotides long.

"The motor pulls the strand through the pore at a manageable speed of tens of milliseconds per nucleotide, which is slow enough to be able to read the current signal," Gundlach said.

Gundlach said the nanopore technique also can be used to identify how DNA is modified in a given individual. Such modifications, referred to as epigenetic DNA modifications, take place as chemical reactions within cells and are underlying causes of various conditions.

"Epigenetic modifications are rather important for things like cancer," he said. Being able to provide DNA sequencing that can identify epigenetic changes "is one of the charms of the nanopore sequencing method."

Coauthors of the Nature Biotechnology paper are Elizabeth Manrao, Ian Derrington, Andrew Laszlo, Kyle Langford, Matthew Hopper and Nathaniel Gillgren of the UW, and Mikhail Pavlenok and Michael Niederweis of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The work was funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute in a program designed to find a way to conduct individual DNA sequencing for less than $1,000. When that program began, Gundlach said, the cost of such sequencing was likely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but "with techniques like this it might get down to a 10-dollar or 15-minute genome project. It's moving fast."
