SYRIA
Critics of Syria's authoritarian regime, at a rare gathering in Damascus, call for a peaceful transition to democracy and an end to the Assad family's 40-year-old monopoly on power. Otherwise, they say, Syria's current chaos might destroy the country.
Almost 200 opposition figures and intellectuals take part in the meeting to produce "a vision about how to end tyranny," according to an organizer.
While unprecedented in its size, the public meeting at a Damascus hotel ? the first since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's rule began in March ? has the government's approval, leading to criticism that the regime is trying to take on a veneer of openness while continuing its bloody crackdown on dissent. Many regime opponents stay away for that reason.
The gathering comes as the regime reels under the pressure of a relentless protest movement, and authorities are clearly anxious to show they were making concessions.
Syria's state-run news agency, meanwhile, reports that a national political dialogue planned by Assad would begin July 10, and "all factions, intellectual personalities, politicians" would be invited. As Assad had said in a June 20 speech, the agenda will include constitutional amendments, including one to open the way to political parties other than the ruling Baath Party, the agency says.

LIBYA
International judges order the arrest of Moammar Gadhafi for allegedly murdering Libyan civilians who rose up against him, as NATO warplanes pounded his Tripoli compound and world leaders stepped up calls for the Libyan leader to resign.
The International Criminal Court says Gadhafi, his son Seif al-Islam Gadhafi and his intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanoussi are wanted for allegedly orchestrating the killing, injuring, arrest and imprisonment of hundreds of civilians during the first 12 days of an uprising to topple Gadhafi from power, and for trying to cover this up.
The warrants from The Hague court turn the three men into internationally wanted suspects, potentially complicating efforts to mediate an end to more than four months of intense fighting in the North African nation. The warrants will be sent to Libya, where Gadhafi remains defiantly entrenched.
Gadhafi's regime rejects the court's authority even before the decision is read, accusing it of unfairly targeting Africans while ignoring what it called crimes committed by NATO in Afghanistan, Iraq "and in Libya now."

EGYPT
Amnesty International says Egypt's military rulers have acknowledged carrying out so-called 'virginity tests' on female protesters ? the first time the army has admitted to the much criticized practice.
Amnesty says in a report that Maj. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a member of the military council ruling Egypt, justified the tests as a way to protect the army from rape allegations.
But the rights watchdog says al-Sisi vowed the military would not conduct such tests in the future.
The 'virginity test' allegations first surfaced after a March 9 rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square that turned violent when men in plainclothes attacked protesters and the army intervened forcefully to clear the square.

TUNISIA
Tunisia's leading Islamist party announces it is pulling out of a commission that is preparing the country for its first elections after the ouster of its longtime dictator.
The pullout is the latest sign of tension between Tunisia's emerging political forces as they struggle to decide what the country will look like after decades of autocratic rule.
The commission was asked to prepare for elections for the constitutional assembly, which were postponed from July to October ? a move angering the Islamist Ennahda Party.
Party leader Rachid Ghannouchi says the commission has "deviated" from its task and is trying to impose an agenda "without consultation or consensus" that could once again delay elections.
The head of the commission, respected jurist Yadh Ben Achour, says it will continue its work regardless of Ennahda's actions, but "we respect its opinion."
As one of the most organized forces in Tunisian society, the moderate Islamist party stood to benefit from earlier elections, as opposed to the more than 100 brand new political parties that haven't had time to establish support.

Looking for fun date ideas? When you have been in a relationship for some time it is easy to become complacent and spend less time together instead of more. Life gets busy and unfortunately, we begin to take each other for granted and put less effort into the relationship. A date night is a fantastic way to combat this problem and give the both of you some much needed time together.
Here are a few new date night ideas that will help bring you back together again.
Backyard Antics
You may be thinking that getting away is just too expensive; therefore, some of your favorite activities are simply out of the question. If you have a decent sized backyard, you might be surprised at the fun date night you can have.
Do you both enjoy camping but do not have the time or the money to head out for an entire weekend? Why not set the tent up in the backyard? Recapture your childhood with this simple ?camping? trip! If possible, build a small fire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Who said you had to go a long distance to enjoy a night out under the stars?
If you would rather sleep in your own soft comfortable bed but need a fun date night idea, why not string up some romantic lights, (left over white Christmas lights will do the trick) and have a cozy dinner under the stars. You can make this as elegant or simple as you like, bring out the fine china or simple paper plates the point is enjoy the time together.
Local Fun
You may have more options than you have considered, particularly if you live in an urban area. Museums, local theater, concerts in the park and annual festivals are all fabulous ideas for a fun date night. Of course, you should both be at least a little interested in the activity, if you find contemporary art a bit boring you may want to skip that type of showing. Check your local paper or city website for fun date night ideas.
Dance Lessons
Have you ever considered learning ballroom dancing? Most people would not consider a class as a fun date night idea; however, it could work for you and your partner. You will get to spend time together, learning something new and most importantly holding each other through the steps. This can actually forge a stronger bond, while being great fun as well. Later, once you have graduated, you will have yet another tool in your date night handbag.
Games
If you and your partner are able to compete and not draw swords, games are a fun date night idea. This activity is not for every couple however, as highly competitive people or those who are easily hurt when they lose will not find this a very conducive date night activity. For those who can compete, laugh and still love board games, bowling, miniature golf and even a rousing game of one on one can be a great alternative date.
Conclusion
Too often people think dates have to be a spectacular event at the best restaurant followed by a movie or theater production and while that is all nice it is by far not the only way to have a great time together. Get creative when planning your date nights, think about what each of you enjoy or are passionate about. Some couples have the time of their lives serving at a local homeless shelter or walking the dogs for the Humane Society. The important thing to remember is to have a good time.

Episode 1: Pilot
In which we are introduced to Angela Chase. ?Angela, who has ?before this episode begins? apparently been a perfect daughter and model student. ?But as she begins a friendship with the ?wild? Rayanne Graff (I mean, these girls giggle, and run around asking people for change to call their mothers ?AS A JOKE. Clearly bad news.) her former BFF Sharon is left waiting (and judging) in the wings. ?Angela concerns her parents (er, mother) by doing really rebellious things like dropping out of being on the yearbook committee, dying her hair ?crimson glow? and rolling her eyes. ?Unbeknownst to her parents, Angela is also lusting heartily after one Jordan Catalano.

Things I learned About Going to Highschool:
Much like love, school is a battlefield. For ?your heart.
Even back in the 1990?s, it was okay for a boy to be in the girls? bathroom. ?As long as he?s gay.
Much like I guessed, if we made a book of what really happened in high school, it would be a really upsetting book.
Grunge rules. ?Except actual real grunge. Like, on your dress. ?When you?ve been pushed into the mud.
Life Lessons Gleaned:
It?s really easy to fluster your parents.
Dads like breasts, it doesn?t matter who they?re on (Um, EWW).
Sometimes, you close your eyes because it hurts to look at things. ?Or it could be the pot.
It?s apparently totally okay for that boy who lives next door to you to take sneaky pictures of you in class like a creeper, because in amazing class montages, he has all of the answers to the teachers? questions.
That even your mom never dreamed that she would sound like such a bitch.
That being trapped in an attic for 3 years with a guy you really like just might make you one lucky lady, but the lack of meat in school lunches is destroying America.
Sometimes, parents don?t actually see what?s going on in front of them, but if they?d listen to their children, they might realize that they are just trying to keep everyone happy, while their spouse is just super uptight and self-centered.
The leaning cute boy, hot as he is, is dumb as a post.
That bitchy moms, if they?d stop being bitchy for a second, might not have to ask why they always have to be the mean one.
Sometimes, when friends think you ?ought to know? what people are saying about you, you really oughten.
If you finish somebody?s cheese, you will be labeled as rude.
Putting the word ?obviously? before statements like ?she lives with her mother, so obviously her mother will be there? is only a stretch of the truth.
Sometimes, it?s hard to get into raves. ?But it?s fun to get drunk with your friends in parking lots.

Saturn's icy moon Enceladus conceals a salty ocean beneath its frozen surface, scientists now suspect.
Using NASA's Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn, scientists have discovered that the water geysers erupting from Enceladus contain a significant amount of salt ? enough to suggest the presence of a subterranean sea.
The finding might have implications for the possibility of life on Enceladus, researchers said.
A team of scientists led by Frank Postberg of the University of Heidelberg used Cassini's Cosmic Dust Analyzer to directly examine the plumes during three flybys by the Cassini spacecraft. Individual particles were analyzed as they hit a metal target, and the ones closer to the moon's surface were found to have a high salt content. [Photos: The Rings and Moons of Saturn]
"The salt-rich ice grains are, on average, heavier than the salt-poor ice grains," Postberg told SPACE.com in an email. "Only a relatively small fraction of the salty particles escape into the E ring." The E ring is the outermost of Saturn's seven ring groupings, and it is made up of particles ejected by Enceladus' geyser plumes.

The idea of a salty sea beneath the icy crust of Saturn's sixth largest moon has been entertained since sodium was first detected in the planet's E ring. [Video:Enceladus: Saturn's Refreshing Secret]
But only about 6 percent of the ring particles were salty, suggesting that they were formed by ice that immediately evaporated into water vapor without forming a liquid, a process known as sublimation, researchers said.
Cassini discovered plumes of water vapor shooting from the southern hemisphere of Enceladus in 2005. The geysers erupt from four parallel trenches known as the "tiger stripes."
While previous studies found a relatively low amount of salt in the Enceladus geyser particles that make up Saturn's outer ring, the percentage is different when studying the geysers themselves.
"The lower you get to the surface, the more salt-rich grains you see," Postberg said.
In fact, more than 99 percent of the ice around the geysers is salt-rich.
"This makes a much stronger case for liquid water," Postberg said.
Earth's oceans get their salt from the rocks that enclose them. The same is true of any other body with an ocean. On Enceladus, pressure would push bubbles of ocean spray into space, where they would quickly freeze before they could break apart. These bubbles would become samples of the ocean they escaped.
The geysers of Enceladus are fed by at least one reservoir of water a few hundred feet below the surface. Whether it is a single large lake or several smaller pools is unknown, but in order for the spray to form, a total water-surface area of several hundred square miles must exist.
Geysers from all four tiger stripes are heavy in salt, so the reservoirs must at least be large enough to cover the area under these fissures.
Based on the scientists' study, these reservoirs connect to a larger ocean about 50 miles (80 km) underground. Calculations limit it to the southern hemisphere, but how wide it extends is unknown.
Theoretically, the geysers could be fed directly by a shallow ocean, but geophysicists consider that unlikely because an enormous amount of heat would be needed to keep such a large body from freezing.
The research is detailed in the online June 22 edition of the journal Nature.
Probing for life
Scientists searching for extraterrestrial life have long considered liquid water a primary requirement for its existence, so an ocean under Enceladus' surface provides another potential target.
Postberg pointed out that, unlike other unseen oceans in the solar system, the water on Enceladus is fairly easy to reach. Jupiter's moon Europa, for instance, could have an ocean under a layer of ice, but retrieving it would require significant effort. By contrast, the geysers on Enceladus pull material ? and potentially life, should it exist there ? from its ocean and shoot it into space.
"The water samples are thrown in front of your spacecraft by the plumes," he said. "You don't have to drill deep to analyze ocean material."
Similarly, as astronomers pinpoint bodies outside the solar system where life might thrive, they tend to focus on planets close to stars, where temperatures are warm enough for liquid water to form at the surface.
But Enceladus, orbiting a planet about 891 million miles (1.4 billion km) from the sun, is cold and frigid on its surface.
"The fact that water is on such a remote and unlikely place surely has implications for the general likelihood of life in the universe," Postberg said.

PARIS ? French authorities are investigating two new suspected cases of E. coli linked to hamburger patties that have already sickened seven children, the health minister said Friday.
Health authorities have ordered a recall of 10 tons of the frozen beef patties produced in France and sold by the German supermarket chain Lidl, but say there is no link to a deadly outbreak of the virus in neighboring Germany.
Seven children, between 18 months and 8 years old, have been hospitalized with E. coli linked to the patties in northern France.
Health Minister Xavier Bertrand said two new patients were being examined for signs of E. coli and the results should be available Saturday. The regional health chief, Daniel Lenoir, said the two ate the same beef patties and later suffered severe diarrhea.
Doctors at the Lille University Hospital in northern France told a news conference Friday that one of the hospitalized children, a 2-year-old, needs breathing assistance and is being held in an artificial coma.
The child ate one of the beef patties, which had been only slightly browned, Health Minister Xavier Bertrand said, urging parents to cook their meat thoroughly.
Beef and beef patties are often eaten less well-done in France than in the United States or some other countries. The French sometimes savor steak tartare, a dish based on uncooked ground beef.
Two of the hospitalized children should be able to go home early next week, said their doctor, Michel Foulard. "The children are starting to recover."
The manufacturer, French company SEB, said the beef for the patties came from farms in France, Germany and the Netherlands and said the patties were analyzed before being delivered to supermarket distributors. Lidl said it has removed all the patties from its shelves.
French health officials said Friday the strain of E. coli found in France is discovered fairly regularly. European Union spokesman Frederic Vincent said were 3,500 cases of E. coli in the EU last year, 93 of them in France.
The deadly German outbreak, which has killed 39 people and infected over 3,500, was eventually traced last week to sprouts from a farm in northern Germany. German health officials say the number of new infections from that outbreak is tailing off but they have still not determined how the sprouts were contaminated.

JUNIOR MINISTER John Perry admitted at a press conference in Sligo last night that it?had been a mistake to promise that breast cancer services would be returned to Sligo within the first 100 days of the new government?s term.
Ocean FM reports that Perry did not announce the full restoration of the services during his press conference yesterday, but he said that mammography services would resume in the last quarter of 2011.
The Save Our Cancer Services North West group, which is campaigning for the full restoration of the services, said it was disappointed and called on Perry to resign for failing to fulfil his promise.
Perry hung up the phone during a live interview with Ocean FM recently when questioned about plans to restore the services. Speaking afterwards to TheJournal.ie, Perry said: ?I said what I said and I had nothing else to add?.
He also said that restoring the health services was ?not a situation of going in and turning the switch back on?.

'I got a Phantom and a Bentley outside of my studio; I'm not selling dime bags,' Dipset MC said about raid of his studio, on 'RapFix Live.'

When the Diplomats stopped by MTV News' "RapFix Live" back in January, the quartet arrived ... as a threesome. So when Sway asked about the absent Juelz Santana, Dipset leader Cam'ron had an explanation.
"He was on his way, but he had some type of allergic reaction on his face," he said, adding that Juelz had eaten something that didn't agree with him.
Cam was quick with a cover-up but as fans soon learned, it wasn't a rash, but a police raid on his Bergen County, New Jersey, studio that kept Santana from the Dipset crew's first appearance on our live stream. And when the Harlem rapper finally sat on the "RapFix" couch on Wednesday, he set the record straight about what happened that day.
"For those who don't know, my studio got raided, to make a long story short. I wasn't there, I wasn't present. One of my artists was there — shout-out to my boy Hynief — he was in the building," Santana said, referring to the friend/MC who was arrested during the raid. "They raided the studio and in the process of raiding the studio they allegedly said they found some firearms. Once again, I wasn't there, I wasn't present, it's a studio."
The raid turned up two handguns, drug paraphernalia and 17 Ziploc bags containing "a greenish brown vegetation consistent with the appearance of marijuana," according to police reports. Santana was later arrested on February 2 and charged with four counts of narcotic and weapon offenses in connection with the raid, which came as a result of a 10-month-long investigation of the studio by the Bergenfield Police Department.
"My name is the biggest so of course they are going to target me as the one to put a lot of the blame on," the Harlem MC said. "I had no clue on what's going on, I rent the studio out to people. That's like if I rent the studio out right now to somebody and they choose to bring whoever they want to bring in to the studio. They rented the studio out; I have no knowledge of what's going on until I come back and your [rental] time is finished."
Juelz also elaborated on his own charges with Sway. "They charged me with the firearms," he said. "They didn't charge me with trying to sell, but they put out a statement making it seem like I was selling weed out of my studio, which is preposterous. Dime bags? I got a phantom and a Bentley outside of my studio; I'm not selling dime bags. That sh-- is just crazy."
Despite his troubles, Santana seemed to be in good spirits and assured fans his lawyer was still sorting out the legalities.
