It?s that time of year again to put your driving skills to the test! It?s Autocross season, presented by the Kentucky Region of the Sports Car Club of America (KYRSCCA). The first meet of the 2012 season takes place on April 14th ?at Unique Automotive, and the first event of the season takes place on April 29th at the UPS 911 Grade Lane lot.
The April 14th meet is billed as the ?Annual Tech & Trailer Cleanout,? and will start at 11:00 am.? You can have your car inspected before the 2012 season begins or come out and help the sponsors clean out their trailer so they can hit the ground running.? Unique Automotive is located in Buechel, at 3918 Bardstown Road, 40218 (see map).
The April 29th Autocross will be the club?s ?Cob web Shaker / Fun Event #1,? and will be held at the UPS Grade Lane Lot, 911 Grade Lane, Louisville (see map).
Autocross?is a motorsport that consists of individual timed runs through a course laid out on a concrete or asphalt surface. The objective is for the driver to drive through the course as fast as possible without missing any gates or hitting any cones. Though autocross events typically involve lower speeds than other motorsports, usually speeds between 60 and 90mph, the intense demand of driver inputs per second is comparable to that of a Formula One race car driver.
The largest autocross sanctioning body is the?SCCA. The SCCA holds the largest amateur autocross event in the world (The National Championship in Topeka, KS every fall) and also sanctions a professional series called?ProSolo. In SCCA-speak, "autocross" is known as?Solo 2?and Solo 1?being high-speed timed events like hill-climbs.
Folks interested in joining the local autocross scene do not have to be dues paying members of the Kentucky Region or of the National SCCA to compete at these events. The cost of a membership to the SCCA promptly pays for itself, as members do not have to pay the additional costs of being a ?weekend member,? and will allow the points accumulated over the season to be put toward a trophy at the end of the season.??
There are two different tiers of SCCA memberships. The first tier is the ?SafeRacer First Gear Membership,? this is a discounted membership intended to help individuals 24years old and under get on their feet and receive all of the benefits of a regular membership for only $45 per year. The second tier is the ?Individual Membership,? this membership includes eligibility for all Club participation licenses, SCCA cloth insignia, SCCA car decal, insurance benefits, and discounts on Club merchandise and other products and services. This membership is compiled of $65 national dues plus Regional dues ranging from $0 - $25 per year. There is also a military discount of $35 making the national dues only $30 per year. ?
