BAGHDAD ? Security officials say gunmen have ambushed Iraqi troops as they were heading back to base after a midnight shift in western Iraq, killing eight soldiers.
An Iraqi military official and a policeman say the attack late Monday in the town of Haditha in Anbar province also wounded one soldier. They say an army lieutenant was among those killed.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
Iraqi troops were searching the city on Tuesday for the attackers. Haditha is 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad.
The attack is a sobering reminder of how vulnerable Iraqi security forces remain as the U.S. military starts to leave.
