Video: Israel steps up aerial attacks on Gaza Strip

>>> state's trip to the region comes as the fighting between israel and hamas showing no signs of stopping. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard angel joins us this morning. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, savannah. as you said, diplomacy is continuing, so is the fighting. a short while ago the overall hamas military commander gave a speech on local television telling his men to be patient and to keep fighting, and already today more than 60 rockets have been fired from here into israel , and israel has carried out many air strikes . a truce may be coming, but the destruction in gaza hasn't even slowed down. this was the main branch of the only bank that distributed funds from the hamas government. israel says right now that the only reason they are dareying out attacks is because of the rockets are still coming.

>> i don't think rockets come from this building.

>> reporter: ten homes last night were attacked of palestinian militants . in this one two children were killed this morning and one of their teddy bears lies in a crater, but are these the last licks before a cease-fire? diplomats in cairo say there could soon be a breakthrough, perhaps even today. both sides have conditions. hamas wants an immediate cease-fire and the lifting of travel and trade restrictions on the gaza strip . israel wants hamas to stop firing all rockets first for 24- 48 hours and then negotiate the details. but unlike gaza , israel can afford to wait a bit longer. it's not paying the same daily price because of israel 's iron dome anti-rocket systems. nbc's martin fletcher got an exclusive look at the iron dome in action.

>> we enjoy the iron dome which is a huge success, and luckily --

>> reporter: there's a siren now. there's a siren now. let's see what happens. it will only fire.

>> reporter: the system calculates which rocket will hit in an inhabited out and knocks it out right there and ignores all others. it fails, too, too out of ten, they say, and it's scary. children in bomb shelters for the sixth straight day. i'm afraid of the sirens, this 7-year-old girl says. there's another siren, going into the kids' shelter. and just as we left, not sure how many rockets have been fired right now, but iron dome one, two, three, four, iron dome rockets are exploding. we'll see what damage it did.

>> reporter: five rockets fired from gaza , four intercepted, one got through and fell in a garden. beyond the doemme, israel has also deployed combat troops along the border threatening to invade if talks fail. also today, an israeli man wielding an ax and a knife attacked an israeli security guard outside the gates of the u.s. embassy in tel aviv . an embassy spokesman said that the situation has been contained. savannah?
