Clothes for people of all ages are available at the Foot of the Cross church. Pam Hill and other Zeigler residents were invited to take what they needed.
"I have a grand daughter that just moved in with me, so I came down here to look for a coat for her," said Hill.
She has several family members to take care of, from her grand daughter to several nieces. It's a lot to take on in tough times and programs like this go a long way to provide for the family.
"In this day and age, it's hard when you have a lot of kids and everything costs so much," explained Hill.
The United Way donated most of the clothes to the church, making the giveaway possible.
"This is a poor area, Southern Illinois. There is a lot of people out of employment," said Pastor Wayne Purdie.
Purdie also works as a butcher in the community, he sees the need for programs like this every day.
"I can see how people come in and they can't get the amount of things they want for the family," explained Purdie.
Clothes, toys, and electronics were all available at no charge. Purdie hopes when people get these items from the church, the money they could have spent on clothing, could go towards other necessities.
"We just want to reach out and help the community in any way that we can," says Purdie.
The Foot of the Cross is accepting clothing donations on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. Officials plan on having giveaways on the third Saturday of each month.
